Had a very good night's sleep last night. Pain is totally under control. I'm booked for an X-ray today and provided the physics are happy with me I might be discharged today!

Here am I the feminist, sticking up for men! I am re-posting a paragraph of erushka's post of 1st May 2015

......
Oops this is annierich's post so will post it on yours!

Had op at 10am on Saturday. Just arrived home!! The NHS at Harrogate Hospital looked after me brilliantly. Thank you.

Well done! Be kind to yourself and take that much deserved rest.

Day 3 - Had an uncomfortable night last night for my first night at home. I've ordered myself a leg trough as I had one in hospital and that seemed to be really comfortable. I hope it arrives soon. I've also had a Fybogel - I hope that starts to work soon. I'm resting and just walking to the loo and dining room table as needed. Taking all the pain Meds as prescribed. Should I be doing more / less?

Day 4 - Fybogel works. I feel so much better! Leg trough has arrived and I'm using it while I've got my leg up on a stool. It's brilliant.

@annierich it's so good to hear you feeling better! Now get those meds on schedule, and rest, ice, elevate, and rest!

What is a leg trough? I'll have to google this. Welcome to the other side. Sleep, heal, take meds, and eat. That's good for week one :)

Day 6. I've had a very small walk outside. It was still very warm outside at 7pm (UK) but it was lovely to be outside. I have a swollen ankle but I've elevated it most of today and will probably ice tomorrow. Slow progress but I'm happy. My husband asked if anything hurt as he accompanied me on my walk, I thought and said 'Actually no, nothing hurts it's wonderful! It's just my muscles don't work any more and my wound feels a bit tight'

@Tweefishy a leg trough is a trough made out of foam and covered in something wipe able that I found my leg in when I woke up after surgery. It supported my leg wonderfully and stopped it from flopping it outwards when I was asleep.

For those who might be interested I'm continuing to make progress. It's now Day 18 and I can now get up off chairs without arms and I've dispensed with the loo seat raiser. I can get in and out of bed on my own - my husband appreciates that!- and I found myself walking normally downstairs today. I have been gradually reducing the amount of codeine I'm taking and should take my last one tomorrow. I'm still taking the maximum dose of paracetamol. I use 2 sticks outside but I can manage with 1 stick inside. I haven't had much swelling and my wound looks tidy and clean. I'm starting to do a few small household tasks but I spend a lot of time resting. However I am getting bored. I think I need to start knitting again or teaching myself how to crochet.
Now for the question - am I doing enough? Should I be doing more?

The advice seems to be don't overdo it. I wasn't prescribed any physio just been for gentle and regular walks when I have felt like it.Glad to hear you are doing so well.

Sounds to me like you are right on track. Increase the household chores as you feel able. I'm no chore freak, so I knew if I felt like doing a little more, I was probably ready.

Are you able to walk a bit outside the house?

Now for the question - am I doing enough? Should I be doing more?
there are no "shoulds" in this recovery. It sounds like you are doing just fine. Do things in halves for now. Walk 1/2 as much as you think you can. Limit chores to 1/2 what you think you can do. Pretty soon your activity level will increase. For now a good balance between activity and rest is critical. You are only 19 days out of major surgery - patience my friend!

A little update. I'm now on day 30 post surgery and doing well. I've finished the dreaded heparin injections - my tummy is bruised all over!- and I haven't taken any painkillers for several days. There are days when I can manage indoors without a walking stick and I now only use one stick outside. I'm still resting lots but I'm slowly increasing the length of my walks outside and how much I do re housework. Boredom is the worst thing but I feel so much better when I'm walking outside. I feel really lucky that I've had no major setbacks. My next goal is to start driving again when I'm allowed and then book a holiday in Cornwall in September. I still anticipate the dreaded arthritic pain when I stand up / sit down etc and am amazed that it's gone!! Hope everyone else is doing well.

Another update. It's now 11 weeks post op and I'm continuing to make good progress. I don't use a stick indoors and only use it outside occasionally. I can walk up and downstairs normally and I managed to put my socks on today - without help! I still can't fasten my shoes yet. We have just returned from a holiday in Cornwall, during which I managed a 3.5 mile walk and I climbed a small hill without using my stick. I've actually got to the stage when I sometimes I forget I've had a THR. Life is good. My next challenge is to lose some (lots) of weight and get back to exercising. For those just starting out on this journey - be patient, you will get there.

Thank you for coming back and giving us an update on your progress @annierich Your recovery is going extremely well and your recent holiday in Cornwall sounds wonderful especially if you have already got to the stage of having periods during which you forget that you have had a THR.This is very encouraging. Please keep your updates coming.
