Ankle Ankle surgery 12/21/2023

@Lindylee, she’s the best! She knows me so well.

I knee scootered most of the day yesterday, but got pretty tired by evening. I ordered an extra pad for the scooter to be delivered today.

I’m sleeping considerably better. I sleep on my side with a pillow between my knees and an ice pack under my ankle for about two hours, then I wake up from pain and have to get on my back, feet up. But it is so nice not having to sleep on my back all night. At least I have two options now! My body feels better when I get up, too.

And the best news ever: when I woke up this morning, my foot and ankle were almost normal size. I am sure I will puff back up today, but it was thrilling to see. I called my husband in to look before I got out of bed!

The accident was three weeks ago today.

Definitely a move in the right direction! Isn’t it wonderful having a change of sleeping position? My foot’s really ached today and I have no idea why.

Ankle and shin continue to improve; however, my hip on my good leg is super sore from all the hopping and scootering. Taking a break from it today (using the wheelchair again), icing, resting. I have artificial hips on both sides.

And I don’t think I am going to get my hotel stay on Friday. This is the view of my deck this morning. This is the first significant snowfall of the season and it happened now! :gaah:

I can well imagine that your hip is protesting. Can't even imagine the different muscles and other soft tissue that are getting called into the game. Glad you are resting and doubly glad that you have the wheelchair.

Phooey about the snow ruining your plans, It's hard to make any plans in January!

Well darn that snow!!!! Hope you can reschedule soon!

Hip is a little better today. Hallelujah! I’m going to continue icing and babying it. I am going sock footed and sliding instead of hopping in a shoe. That little break seems to help, too.

I have to admit, I was worried yesterday. I have spent more than a year fixing, stretching, and strengthening my hips to normal. No backsliding there PLEASE!

Also trying to shift my focus to one day at a time, day-by-day what is in front of me. Taking the long view—next appointment, when can I walk, next milestone—is not working for me mentally. Everything feels a long time from today. I am getting restless. This is when I begin my lessons in patience.

That's an excellent idea, baby steps & see a little bit of progress day by day, although you did hop backwards for a bit but these thing happen. I made it to the garden centre today to get a few plants for the spring garden, when it arrives! And a toy for our new kittens. I think the kittens are a great distraction right now. I'm counting it off in weeks. Friday will be one week of my new one month sentence, & 3 weeks to the possible new freedom date. Nearly ¼ done already, yippee

These recoveries are‘t linear are they? It’s 2 steps forward and one back, but best to listen to your body and take that step back if you need to. Although I could walk in my boot unaided the last couple of weeks, every so often I felt the need to use a crutch to give it a break. I’ll be doing the same now the boot is off.

what a shame you’ve got to reschedule your hotel stay. The snow looks lovely from inside looking out but no fun when you’re not mobile. Hope you get your weekend soon.

Three weeks since surgery! Three weeks to weight bearing! I hope, I hope, I hope!

:yahoo:

Injury site continues to improve and feel better, albeit I am pretty swollen this morning. The overworked leg continues to protest: I have added knee pain to my growing list of complaints on that side. I have been treating the overuse aches and pains with self massage, ice packs, and Tylenol. I hoped to be back on my knee scooter today, but I may give it one more day.

That's the best approach.

And, keep in mind, this is temporary. You are halfway there. You've got this!

My hip and lower back hurt so badly this afternoon, I am getting scared something is wrong. The pain is so sharp. Even my old broken down hips didn’t hurt like this.

Maybe don't panic yet, you are walking now, more & awkwardly. 3 weeks ago I had a very sore lower back & neck, all down to walking on the knee crutch differently. Take your painkillers for at least 48 hours rest then try massage. Muscles in spasm are very painful & need lots of rest

I think you are right it’s a muscle spasm (not damage to my hip implant), @Annie N. I found a knot in my lower back and massaged the heck out of it. I have been icing almost continuously since this morning.

You might want to alternate the icing with heat. I've found that heat works better for me when I have muscle spasms in my back. Also, as the muscles loosen up, I try to do some gentle yoga-style stretching -- like seated cat-cow and gentle twists. We're all different, so do what works for you.

Muscle spasms can be so painful. Take it easy but try not to stay in one position for too long. Good advice from above.
