TKR Allin1's left knee TKR

So, a week after I twisted my knee, I feel like I'm back close to where I was. I guess I ended up setting myself back a week.

These things happen. New joints complain very quickly in the early days. Just keep icing and rest. You have not set your recovery back. Just a small bump in the recovery road.

TKR's don't like to be twisted, even when they're older, like mine.

Had my first out patient therapy today. I like my therapist, he doesn't seem like he is going to hurt me, lol, and seems knowledgeable. A lot of the swelling has come out and I'm able to do more of the ROM stuff without setting it back.
Forgot to mention, sat in recumbent bike and did 10 or so revolutions without any resistance. Since bike riding is one of my activities, it was nice to give it a go. He says I can give my real bike a try around the neighborhood, without my clip in shoes. I may give that a go in a day or two, see how it goes.

A full bike revolution is awesome!!! We got a peloton at the start of quarantine and I’m looking forward to getting back on it for some slow “scenic” (not class) rides!

Yay! That's good news. Remember that you are in control of what happens to that knee, so be sure to not let him hurt you in the future. If he does, it'll just set your recovery back some. It's your knee, your recovery, and your say so!

Great news on the bike revolution. It took me a while before I was able to do that. Now, I can ride a bike like crazy, well, on the days my old knee will let me!

So, I raised the seat on my bike about an inch, and tried it My knee said
NO!!!! So I raised it another 1.5 inches and tried it again, and my knee said, well, if you must. I rode on my smallest gear on the flattest section around my house, for about 1/2 mile. Yeah me! (I've rode centuries, 100 mile rides, in the past, so 1/2 mile is lol, but felt good!

It’s all progress!!!!

My son just learned to ride a bike and he can’t wait for me to join him. One problem... I never learned myself! My biggest shame, lol!!

That's awesome news :ok:about getting on your bike, small achievements are great for our wellbeing, I fell off a bike prior to my surgery ( was utterly embarrassing) and actually hurt my self and my pride so I'm reluctant to try getting on a bike again - but Summer is coming and where we have our Summer Apartment there are bikes available which is the best method off getting to the beach ...so I will follow your example and try again :bicycle1:
Wishing you happy & safe rides xx

At PT on Monday, he had me step on and off a 4 inch box, and a 6 inch box. Today I was looking at the steps in my home, and I thought to my self, I wonder if I can go up and down those steps normally, instead of one at a time? The first couple were awkward, but then I got into the groove. I've climbed up and down the steps 3 or 4 times since yesterday, without resorting to one step at a time.
Small victories, lol!

@allin1 ... Good job with the stairs! I can do the 4” step at PT pretty well, bet the 6” stairs in our house are still too difficult, especially going down. Ouch. I know it will happen when m knee is ready!

That’s awesome! Funny how we get into habits and don’t even realize what we can do!

In my pre-Op thread I was warned about gabapentin. I took it as prescribed (300 msgs 3 times a day) and tried to ease off it by going to 2 a day for 3 days, followed by one a day for 3 days. When I tried stopping from there, I felt quite anxious. Luckily my mother-in-law was on 100 mg doses. She let me have enough to go to a single 200 mg dose for 3 days, followed by 100 mgs a day for 3 days. After that I seemed ok to stop and have been off it several days now. Maybe it was all in my head, but I had a much harder time with it than the oxycodone.

So, I am pretty happy with my rehab, but it feels like the easy and quick improvements are over. This week my knee feels about the same as last week. I expect it will continue to improve, but more slowly.

@allin1 Yes, the noticeable improvements slow down. but you do continue to improve. I am 1.5 years out from my first PKR. Other than kneeling I don't even think about my knee. Well other than I am not constantly in pain.. Getting ready for the Left one, next week...

I can do the 4” & 6” stairs at PT with no problem. Came home to try my stairs. Nope. Not ready for those unless I do one at a time. Soon, though!
