THR 9 months post-hip recovery!!!

Love the chair, but I certainly see the issue.
My legs didn't like to be flat out, so knees were slightly bent but there was some support there from the all-in-one recliner. I even added a small pillow.
Now that you have added the pillow, doesn't give you alot of elevation either.
Not bad for a place to sit for a bit, but I lived in mine for quite some time and it would not work especially with ottoman moving about.
Maybe it's time to treat yourself?
Hope today is a good day!

Hi @Trudijane
I'm thinking you've figured out how to find your thread when posting, but just in case I've included instruction.
The forum can feel confusing initially, but once we get the hang of it, it's easy to navigate.
https://bonesmart.org/forum/threads/how-can-i-find-my-threads-and-posts.14732/

I think it will be of benefit later on if you post any / all questions on your thread and wait for responses here. Reason being, if you recall a question you asked and wanted to check on responses again, if it's posted elsewhere, you may forget where it is. I think you'll appreciate having as much info on your thread as possible.

If you're questioning using the chair for elevation, you're really supposed to have toes above nose. If you're only referring to using it while watching tv of reading, do what's most comfortable for you.

I hope you have a lovely day! Stop back often, we're here for you.

Your chair is very similar to one I had in our static caravan (holiday home on the river). I can't tell by your photo, but isn't the footstool higher on one side than the other? If so, turn it 180 degrees so the higher end is nearer the chair so the back of your knees are slightly elevated.

Also, you can get 'cat claws' :heehee: :kittykiss:which are grips to hold rugs in place. Put them under the footstool base.

From Amazon ... $8.99, cheaper than a new chair ...

there is no way I’m going to cross my bad leg to see how far I could go. I know it will hurt and I don’t want to do anything that will hurt. Should I tell my surgeon that I don’t want to go to pt? Is there anyone here that this has helped them???
Crossing your legs is a great 'no-no- for hips so don't worry - they should ask you to do that.
Attached is a photo of the chair and next time I get a recliner
I think you need to read this article Recliner chairs: things you need to know if buying one for your recovery.

My legs don’t like to be flat out either. Where the pillow is now feels fine to me at a good angle. I’m going to have to go back to Macys and try out those 2 green recliners what felt so comfortable before. If they still are, I’ll buy 2 !!! But, sitting in one place for too long on any surface makes me want to get up & stretch for awhile. I wish I could figure out which muscles are affected that make me uncomfortable....

PS. Will I ‘never’ be able to cross my legs? And avoid certain movements? Or will there be a time when I can do everything I used to (bend over to pick up my cat, etc.).

Hi @Trudijane, Yes you will be able to enjoy all those things again. I don't remember exactly how long it took with my first hip, but I was crossing my legs, wearing heels, bending down and doing just about anything you used to do within reason :) You will intuitively know when to use caution....I go hiking and I am just more cautious than my fellow hikers, but I do it and love it! I cannot wait to get back into the game of life again!

Of course you will...that is why we had this surgery done...
Still early days...and I too, had to get up after sitting too long.
Frustrating, this recovery business - but all temporary and all well with it in the end.
Keep the faith @Trudijane
You Will get there!

@Trudijane I had surgery the same day you did. And although my approach was different, I still have some of the same aches and discomfort you have.... Especially after sitting for a while.

The most important thing I have found is to be patient with your body and self. My getting into a tizzy because I want it now (think Violet in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory) created far more anxiety than any problem I might have on a given day. Relax and just let it come. It will.

I know you're right. I am very impatient to feel normal again and not be afraid (or cautious) with every move I make - am I getting in/out of the car correctly? I don't know - but instinctively it feels right! My upper body must be getting stronger, because I hold onto this loop at the top of my car, hold my legs together, and swivel in until they are both in front of me. I sort of like to know what's going on and why with my muscles. Is it nerve pain? I think so sometimes, because suddenly I get some tingling in my ankle - that can only be a nerve or compression of a nerve while I'm sitting.

I will NEVER regret having the surgery - I suffered so many months of acute pain - but recovery is no fun either and I'm so anxious to feel normal again and not worry about every single move I make. Or if I did something that day to exacerbate the problems which I don't want to do. Some days I think I'm doing better; then I regress the next day. Thanks for listening to me vent & vent....

I am still at a loss as to what recliner chairs I should get or should I wait until there are less restrictions during my recovery? If there will be!
My question now is should I wait another several months or but when I'm still recovering?

My couch used to be comfortable but I rare sat on it; I watched TV by lying on the right side (where my hip was replaced) and now I cannot lie on that side at all; it is too sensitive.

I did read the recliner article - but still don't know what the best chair for me would be (or chair(s) as I'd like to get a matching set.

Hi @Trudijane, I see you had your op the day after mine :). You sound just like me, over thinking things, what you can and can't do yet, impatience etc. I spent a lot of the recovery time in bed, in between walking around and doing a few exercises, I can bend and pick things off the floor now but I have to do the golfers stand to do that. Finally mastered getting in and out of bath for a shower but I do have to use a set of step ladders :loll:. I am now down to one crutch and can walk a little without anything, although my back does hurt and I limp slightly but I'm hoping the more I do it the better it will get. I have practised getting in my car but haven't plucked up the courage to drive it yet , I'm a scardey cat. I now sit downstairs a lot of the time in my recliner, but have to put a cushion on it to lift the height slightly. I thought my recovery was very slow but realised I've come a long way in these 7 weeks, hope you're having a good day. X

@Trudijane I just saw your response. I do understand the impatience. I truly do. I hope you are able to relax and let it flow. Hugs :console2:

I don't know what the golfers stand is, but I think I'm doing that 'instinctively'? I have to clean out my cat's litterbox and pick up things off the floor. How I bend is put my weight on the good leg, and bring my bad leg up in the air so that there is almost a straight line between the legs - does that make any sense? It's just an instinctive move where I know I won't hurt myself.

At home, I am walking around w/o anything but when outside, I feel more comfortable with a cane just in case I lose balance. i find steps and taking a shower pretty easy but very very careful to hold onto a bar; I hate getting in/out of my car, but once I'm in, driving is no problem. What IS a problem is having to move the seat forwarad aftrer I have moved it back to get into the car. That's tricky. The recliner I have downstairs is fairly comfortab le with the pillow on top of it; but the bed is more comfortable, so I'm getting into the bad habit of lying in bed instead of staying downstairs. I think I'm afraid of making too many changes. Or if the recliner is good for me. So, yes, I'm definitely overthinking but my hip area feels solid - my muscles around the area are still giving me problems (aching); the groin muscle; my back feels stiff; the quad muscle; the lateral muscle - where it is varies but I know it is just not healed yet.

Yes @Trudijane that's the golfers stance, so you are doing it right, I overdid it yesterday so I'm staying in bed today. Bed or chair I don't think it matters where you sit as long as you move around a bit. Yeah I had the same thought about moving car seat,I'm not very tall so reaching the lever to bring it forward once I'm in it is a problem. All this healing lark is just trial and error

Ice any /all areas that are causing you pain or discomfort.
It sounds like you're doing pretty well, Trudijane.
Keep up the good work and have a great day!
@Trudijane

OMG, It's June 1 which means I'm going on almost 2 months of recovery! And, I'm still not feeling back to normal - whatever that feels like. So, it still concerns me or frustrates me. I'm not even sure I know how to describe it.

Waking up and getting up after sitting are the hardest. I have to stretch to feel as if I can even walk. I can walk w/o a cane, but I do so only in the house; when I'm outside walking (for exercise mainly); I still hold onto the cane just in case. It's probably my imagination, but sometimes i feel as if my right hip is too fragile and after 2 months it should be much better.

My back is often stiff along with the muscles in the area. The problem is I don't know what to expect or when, and I'm so anxious to just walk without worrying or being cautious.

I am still using my sock prop, and I use my shoe prop for my car (moving the seat back & foward) so as not to strain the muscles of my legs. Just feeling a bit low.

Going on 2 months recovery!!!
Recovery is sooo slow it seems or it seems better..then gets worse. I wish I knew what I was supposed to feel like or not supposed to feel like; I can say that I have NO pain the way I did before the operation. But 2 months later, I thought I would be doing much better than I am.

I don't even know how to describe the discomfort I have on my right side. Weakness of muscles? Is the hip connection solid enough? Since I'm walking w/o a cane when at home - it must be ... but it seems that any moment it can 'break'. I'm sure that's in my head - but there are still so many things that I am unable to do.

Part of it is a result of pre-op assurances...people telling me they were back to horeback riding in a month. So my expectations were high. When I think of doing something that strenuous, it would be impossible. Walking is just about all I can do; and I do that every day. I haven't made it to physical therapy yet because of lack of availability but I think I should go if for a little while.

Anybody else at the 2 month recovery period? I know it's not a competition, but it would help to know that I'm not alone.
