THR 5 days post surgery

Starting a cane instead of a walker. Been off the walker for two days in the house. My gait is terrible, as it was before surgery. PT and time should fix that. There is no pain, just stiffness and swelling. I keep waiting for something to happen in the reverse of feeling better and stronger every day, like it can't be this easy...but maybe it can. Still wish I wouldn't have had to have a hip replaced. But not sorry I did it.

Swelling and dry skin! Oh yeah. I had swelling that lasted maybe 3 weeks. Now it is just a little once the swelling went down the whole top layer of skin started peeling.

I found this lotion it's new from Eucerin for diabetics dry skin relief it has helped me a lot! I have edema so my calves are extremely dry.

3 weeks post op. Other than restrictions on the 90 degree rule, no others. I've walked my old woods path with the dogs, I can now shave my own legs, drive and clean my house with modified bending. The muscles hurt like they've had a good workout but next day are fine. Starting PT next Monday but already doing the exercises. I can only contribute my recovery to having been in strong shape in my legs before surgery. And to the grace of God. May everyone have as easy a journey in awful circumstances.

I'm glad your doing so well, it's 4 weeks today! I'm getting stronger everyday, some days are better than others. I still have a lot of swelling and the incision has some bad spots that are still tender. I've been getting out more walking as much as possible and started to drive this week. I'm so glad the worst of it is behind us and better days are ahead!

@ashmae13 happy 3 weeks! Me too today. It's been a roller coaster ride for me. So happy to have this forum for help when I have felt alone. :)

@ashmae13 how are you today? We are on the same recovery journey with surgery one day apart. Are you still taking any pain meds?

Hello all~ I had my left THR 5 weeks ago so I am just ahead of you. I improved more and more everyday but then stopped improving at about 3 1/2 weeks for about three days. I had terrible fatigue and swelling and so laid off PT exercises and napped and rested. When I got to 4 weeks it was a bit better and now this 5th week is better still! I realized I was pushing too fast and when I let up~ it helped.
I like Vitamin E oil for dry areas~ and I STILL can't shave all of my left leg! Oh well ~ as someone said ape legs come with the territory!
I hope you all are doing well!

@donor i am only taking Tylenol and occasionally ibuprofen. Like Sullivand I had a tougher time this week. Probably pushed too much last weeeknd so Tuesday while driving I had leg cramps. That was interesting. The rest of this week I've taken it easy. Kinda sore which I hadn't been before. 4 weeks on Monday. I start therapy then. Although I've already been doing the leg exercises and walking. I'm also thinking bursitis has come back so we'll see what the doc says at my 6 week checkup about that. All in all the pain is still better than before surgery so as long as improvement continues I would say this was a success.

Good for you! I tried ibuprofen and I was not ready! I am taking 3 Tramadol a day. I would like to get off of it but when I go past 8 hours my soreness is horrible. So I remind myself we are all at our own pace. I am thinking it is taking me longer because I am recovering from two surgeries! Anterior in Jan and Bilateral in May. I am praying for patience! Why did we all think we would be dancing the night away in no time?! Enough complaining! I am thankful the preop pain is gone! Be safe in PT and hope you bursitis is mild and goes away quickly!

4 weeks yesterday. Had first PT. Goal for the week, 3 PTs and to walk the dogs everyday. I am significantly stronger. @Sullivand didn't think anything of it lol. I don't have a lot of room for complaints. If I have a sudden reversal then I might have something to complain about. Best wishes to all.

Hi ashmae

You seem to be doing really well, don't overdo things and assess what you are about to do before doing it. You will get stronger as time goes by there are no prizes for trying to rush things. Keep safe and rest when needed.

6 week check-up today. I've been given the go ahead to do anything with only a couple of restrictions. Like running, jumping, or sitting or placing my leg indian style. I still don't have a perfect gait although I know it will come with time. This week I'll return to the gym and get on the bike and elliptical. And stretch. I've missed stretching. Still slight swelling which i manage with ice. Best wishes to everyone in their hip journeys.

@ashmae13 congrats you are one day ahead of me. Great report! Are you still finding need for any pain meds? My doc today suggested pt. Have not done it before now. Best of luck!

@donor i take pain pills occasionally. It hurts so much less than before surgery i think if there is pain i don't even know it! Good luck with therapy. I loved getting everything moving again.

A little over 8 weeks post surgery. Been back to work now 2 weeks. This week has been quite humid and my legs have ached in the front thigh area and the hips. I have not been able to do my exercises with work...not motivated or organized enough. I have walked every day however and kept active since my job is daycare. I'm disappointed by the pain of course since it is really the first since the surgery. Hard to tell if I'm doing too little or too much. Or if it's just humidity. Perhaps I should move to Arizona to experiment. In the winter of course, since I'm in Minnesota . Anyway...next week won't be quite as busy...I had 2 extra kids this week. So I'll add back regular PT exercises and see what happens. Hope everyone else is doing well!

I went to my final doctors appt. 9 week post op and going back to work on Monday. I'm nervous but I'm only going be working 6 hours a day for the first week. I'm on vacation the following week, then I'm back on 12 hours! I know this will be hard but I'm feeling a lot better, my wound finally healed last week. I'm going to start water therapy classes tomorrow to help strengthen my muscles. The swelling is still a big concern for me, will have to wait and see. I do think the humidity does makes the aching seem worse. I think it's going take time to really start feeling better. Good luck!
