Whoops. Sorry, should've read your last post more closely. I see that you just had your MUA today. Correct? Let me know how it goes. Best of luck to you. JMB

Thanx Jo. Your experience and kind words (along w/that of all my other bonesmart friends) gives me the confidence to tell my ortho doc that I don't think that MUA is in order yet. I'd like to see what my ROM is at 8 wks post-op and then decide if MUA is needed. Whadda think? JMB

The other thing I think you need to consider now that you're back at work is cutting waaay back or stopping all that extra exercise. Some simple stretches and bends are fine, but you get all the exercise you need with your work routine. If you experience swelling, it's going to be because your knee is telling you that you're really overdoing things by working AND doing exercises AND riding a bike for 30 minutes! Geeze....I got tired just reading all that....:th_heehee:.

Correct U are Jamie. Yesterday afternoon when I got home from work all I did was elevate & ice my knee until I went to bed. I'm learnin'! Thanx JMB

woo hoo, he's learning!!!! Sorry Mike, I just had to do that:th_heehee:!!! I have been doing the same thing, thinking you must work, work, work, the knee, but all it has done is set me back. This is sure an interesting ride we are on. Very frustrating when you are use to being the one in control, but now must deal with a knee telling you how things will be. I still have that lip of scar tissue my knee cap is getting caught on, guess I will be calling the Dr. to see what he plans to do with it now. I go back to work this Monday, may need to meet you after work for a good cry in our beers:ccheers: I have a feeling it is going to be a very, very long day!

Re: 2 weeks out 7/20/2011

Oh, my aching knee. I'm just past 5 weeks now, going to PT 3 times a week. Yesterday, she worked me a little too hard, I think. Also, having trouble getting to 0 degrees (is that flex?) so in addition to my knee extension exercise, the PT pushed on my knee. That about sent me through the roof!! The fact that I walked around a mall (with my cane) afterward probably didn't help! So today, I've been resting and icing a lot. Also took my ibuprofen, which I don't think helps much at all. Every time I think I can be patient, and I think about how early this is in my recovery, I get frustrated all over again. Self defeating, I guess! Now I'm nervous about going to PT tomorrow. I really want to do everything I can to get my knee and all it's parts working right again. So off I go to my couch and my ice. Hoping week 6 sees more improvements. I will say...I am sleeping better! Taking my hydrocodone at night...but sleeping pretty well, thank goodness!!

I just read Josephine's library article "Improving Extension and Flexion". It's the extension I'm having trouble with, and I will try some of the suggestions I read about. I do the one on the bed and I've started hanging a little purse with a tomato sauce can inside from my ankle. I also support my ankle and let gravity pull my knee down. Maybe do these a couple times a day? They are both part of my PT. Thanks for these suggestions. I'm heading back to the library for more good information.

Glad you find it helpful. Extension is often much harder to achieve than flexion and takes longer too. Don't fret, don't let the PTs push or hurt you. You already have fab flexion and the extension will come. You're a mere 4 weeks out from surgery - check again in another 4 weeks or even 8 and you will be amazed at the difference. Nothing in this business happens quickly!

Met w/my ortho doc today. He said it's too early to do a MUA, especially w/my ROM being at 110 degrees after only 5 wks. While he said that he could feel some scar tissue around my patilla, he said that with some gradual stretching and gentle manipulating of my knee cap, this may resolve w/o MUA. He also prescribed an anti-inflamatory med for me to take for the next 4 wks. Finally, he said that he thinks I've been pushing too hard and overworking my poor new knee. I think the words he used went something to the effect that if you pound on something hard enough or long enough, of course it's gonna bark back at ya! Especially with me already back to work. So, I'm gonna follow his advise (which not suprisingly is what I've been hearing repeatedly here at Bonesmart) and do more elevating and icing and less exercising. I'm hopeful that this will bring more progress sooner. I'm scheduled to meet w/my doc in three weeks. I hope my better-rested knee is happier and healthier by then. Best to you all. Thanx JMB

I think I like your surgeon!!! He's a BoneSmartie!

Well, there's a surprise! Have you actually read all the advice others have given you in this thread? All that your surgeon said and more.

btw, would you be a dear and put your surgery date in your signature like the rest of us do?
You can find the instructions here How to create a signature.
That also applies to anyone else who is reading this.
Thank you.

I just went to control panel, as you suggested, and hopefully, my edited signature will show up. I've had a couple better nights because I've taken my pain med without worrying I'm taking it too often. I have PT this afternoon, and I will tell her that my knee pain was pretty rough after my last session. I want to do whatever I need to, but maybe it was a bit much last time. Also. I thought I was doing better emotionally, but last night, had a bit of a crying jag. Just frustration coming out. I feel better this morning...the rest really helps. I also continue to read and reread the posts on this site...so very helpful and reassuring.

Don't worry, mj, we all have those weepy episodes, even the men! It's a lot to handle overall.

But thank you very much for doing your signature. Just right! :thumb:

Home from PT and happy to report that even though I had a good workout, my therapist did not have to push on my knee because it's at 0!! I was so happy to hear that. It also helped that I took one pain pill about an hour before therapy. The ibuprofen just wasn't helping. My hope is that soon, the ibuprofen will be enough. However, I will continue with the pain pill for my sessions next week.

That's good, mj. I suggest you continue with your prescription pain meds for at least another month. I was on mine for a full three months! It really is worth it in the long run.

Jo, you have two different people on this thread, mjhandle who started it and then mbitney started on it also. that is why i think you are confusted about adding date after signature, mjhandle did it and then mbitney did it to his. maybe mbitney could have his own thread???
