Hi Josephine- my incision is dry and healing but I noticed tonight that it is warm to the touch. I don’t believe I have a fever. The incision just appears to be warm. Is this normal or shall I call the Doc?

Healing generates warmth and even heat. Don't worry about it

Well it’s been 4 weeks and I’m back to work ½ days tomorrow. I’m stronger everyday with a bit less pain. Not sure I’m ready to go back - but I want to try as I know my team needs me. This site is a godsend! Far more helpful than my surgeon!

Thank you everyone!

@jmoney

Make sure when you get home, you do little to nothing.
Ice and rest.
I went back early and was excited but worn out.
Best to you and glad you are doing well!:friends:

@jmoney, please note that this is the second time we have had to merge recovery threads for you. It is really important to keep all your recovery info in one thread so that we are able to keep up with everything you post about what is going on with you. This is the only way that we can know how to respond properly to you when you ask questions or express concerns.

Any time you have an urgent question or concern, you can always tag a mod or admin which will let then know you need a reasonably quick response. If you feel you need a new title at this point in your recovery, just tag one of us and let us know what you'd like it changed to and we'll take care of it.l

Take care and keep us posted. WE CARE!

4 weeks and back to work? How did it work out? I really can't imagine being back to work at the 4 week mark.

I’m sorry. I couldn’t figure out how to add to the post! Don’t kick me out pls! I wanted to provide an update!

I went back to work part time 2 weeks ago. I still have a good amount of leg pain but it’s the 12 inch external incision and my muscle was cut from thigh to knee - so it’s healing and hurting as well. My tendon was stretched to the point that my foot and ankle are swollen.
The Doc said my incision is so big because my bones are petite and I have softball thighs- big muscles. I’m 5’10. Apparently, it’s the smaller hip he’s ever done.

I kind of feel like I was in a car accident. Lots of leg trauma. But my leg gets better- less pain and more strength daily.

The hardest part of returning to work was not being able to elevate my leg and constantly ice. And of course, no nap time! I really miss naps.....

But all and all, I really am getting better and am so grateful that it’s behind me.

I can’t wait until the pain is gone! I’m grateful It will all go away someday soon.

For those that are struggling - I want you to know that not everybody feels “great” 2 weeks later.... this is a major surgery and very hard on your body. It takes time to recover. If I hear about 1 more 70 year old who felt great after a week- I’m gonna lose it!!!

It does get better! Give yourself some time and hang in there!

Best of luck to all my fellow healers!

@jmoney You'll notice that I have merged your newest thread with your original recovery thread.
This is the second time that your threads have been merged. Please don't keep starting new threads.

For several reasons, we prefer that you only have one recovery thread:
  • That way, we have all your information in one place. This makes it easier to go back and review your history before providing advice.
  • If you keep starting new threads, you miss the posts and advice others have left for you in the old threads, and some information may be unnecessarily repeated
  • Having only one thread will act as a diary of your progress that you can look back on.
So please post any updates, questions or concerns about your recovery here.

Don't worry that we won't see your question because, between us, the staff read all new posts every day.
If you need an urgent response to a question, just tag a member of staff.
How to tag another member; how to answer when someone tags you

If you prefer a different thread title, just post what you want and we'll get it changed for you.

Here are the instructions on finding your thread, How can I find my threads and posts? . Many members bookmark their thread, so they can find it when they log on.
Please find a way to save or bookmark your thread, so we don't have to keep merging threads for you.

Very true @jmoney .
I'm sorry that anyone ever gave you the impression that it was anything other than excising your femer, popping out your hip socket, putting in a prosthetic liner, ball and stem ...sounds major to me.
People have surprisingly miraculous recoveries, but mostly average..takes many months to get over recoveries.
Glad to see you are staying strong.
At 14 months post op, I'd say I'm 98 percent Great!
Keep the faith!

@Josephine ,
I’m 8 weeks out and have a little less pain and a little more strength everyday! I even swam (not good or far) in the Gulf of Mexico ocean last weekend! I am so grateful and hope I give others hope!

That said, I still have pain- now more in the back of my leg and butt muscle (surgery side). Is this normal? Also, I have a click in thigh when I bend down. Also, my scar is swollen almost daily.
Lastly, my foot / ankle are still sore and numb -from pulled tendon during surgery-is that normal?

Thank you!

I guess you tried to tag Josephine with your new thread. Please read the instructions below, which were posted for you before as well.

Hi!
I'm in my 3rd week and doing well on Tylenol for the pain.
Sorry to hear you suffered with more pain than you anticipated. I agree the doc made it sound like I'd be able to walk day 1 then work from home by week 2. The reality of what you experience during recovery is much different. Yes being able to stand & walk with pain meds & walker does happen day 1. Walking normally unassisted takes much longer. I'm so grateful for this forum, it has really helped me understand what is normal recovery symptoms, how to cope with them & what to watch out for.

I decided to give myself a full month of recovery before returning to work. You mentioned the hardest part was not being able to ice & elevate. I'm experiencing quite a bit of information so ice & elevating is a necessity for me. How long did it take for your inflammation to go away?

:hi: Glad to hear from you!

Josephine will weigh in but that sounds like your piriformis muscle might be the culprit.
I had that going on last week most assuredly due to some strenuous activity and the stretches for it knocked it right out.

How long did it take for your inflammation to go away?
I iced from the time I got home from work until bedtime the first months after returning to work.

Hope all gets better and better!

So 10 weeks out and I’m starting to feel good again! The Doc told me I’d be better in 2 weeks.. I was not. I went back to work in 4 weeks. That was tough and I believe to soon.

I still have pain in my surgery leg- on the scar (it swells and gets hot) deep in my leg and my butt. My tendon that was pulled during surgery is heeling. My no-surgery knee is sore from carrying to much of the load but all that said I feel a little bit better, less pain and more strength, everyday!

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!! My surgical leg is slightly longer than the left. Which has caused some problems as well!!

All that said I’m better!! I’m walking with minimal pain and even swam in the Gulf of Mexico.

it’s all going to be ok! It just takes time. Be patient. It a long, painful road to recovery!
