TKR 10 week check up

I feel sad when I read that a member has suffered pain after PT -- we have a different system in Australia. We have to pay for our PT sessions, so most of the time we just do 'light exercising and walking'. I don't know much about knee replacements, but I do know a whole load about hips and walking was my best friend. Rest well Jana :)

Well I wussed out of going to small family reunion on hubbies side.
The thought of having to get ready than ride close to an hr in the car and visiting was just too much!
I was really looking forward to seeing people but physically couldn't do it!
Feeling depressed frustrated and regretting doing the surgery !

I was four weeks out on Memorial Day weekend and was invited to my BIL's for a cookout that was an hour away. I don't blame you for not going.

We'll all be in a better place one of these days. Little steps!

I get it... Sometimes the effort of getting somewhere is just too much. Maybe you can go to brunch or out for coffee tomorrow, just to get a change of scenery.

PT & MASSAGE AFTER TKR

Physical Therapy (PT)is primarily concerned with the remediation of impairments and disabilities and the promotion of mobility, functional ability, quality of life and movement potential through examination, evaluation, diagnosis and physical intervention carried out by the Physical Therapists (Wikipedia).

After TKR, most of us are subjected to physical therapy to help with the improvement in range of motion and strengthening of the muscles. PT can be a very painful experience and if we worked too hard, our knees become more stiff and swollen afterwards. And this will cause delay in recovery as experienced by many TKRers. I feel that PT is necessary but it should be done gently and at our own pace as the wounds from the surgery needs healing, not beating up.

In my home country, outpatient rehab is not very popular. I was taught to do some PT exercises at the hospital and was advised to continue doing them at home after I was discharged. I was so glad that I did not pushed myself too hard when I did the PT at home. I did it gently twice a day, sometimes once and sometimes, I had even forgotten to do it. I believed that because of this, I did not suffer from prolonged swelling and stiffness due to the swelling. In fact, my rate of recovery was quite fast. It was only when my knees felt better and stronger, then I started to exercise more intensively and my range of motion improved gradually.

Massage is described as the manipulating of superficial and deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue using various techniques, to enhance function, aid in the healing process, and promote relaxation and well being (Wikipedia).
Besides PT, I believe that we should consider doing massage as well. I understand that massage after TKR helps to speed up recovery. It helps to move the fluid and get the scar tissue moving, reduce pain and increase range of motion. I also understand from one expert in muscles that after TKR, we should massage the entire thigh area, front and back. This helps to reduce stiffness at the knees and improve range of motion.

In general, massage is good for us. I enjoyed doing body massage all along as I would feel very relaxed and re-energised afterwards. Some people like traditional massage that uses lots of strength when applying pressure which can be very painful. I prefer the more relaxing massage because its very therapeutic for me.

Among some of the benefits of massage are:-

·Improve blood circulation
·Promote tissue regeneration and reduce scar tissue
·Reduce anxiety, tension and fatigue
·Produce endorphins, a natural feel good drug
·Enhance immune system
·Reduce body aches and pain
·Reduce stiffness and improve range of motion
·Improve sleep quality

Going for regular massage can be quite costly. But we can minimise it by massaging ourselves particularly on areas that we can easily reach. I do this every night while watching TV, so it has become a routine. Occasionally, I will go for massage by a professional massage therapist. There are many techniques of massage but there is no evidence of which one is the most effective. You can google to check out various techniques of massage and how it is applied. Try out some of them and see which one works for you.

Here's something to share with you. I discovered a website and video by Heather Wibbels, a Licensed Massage Therapist which is interesting and may be beneficial.

What r your experiences??? Any suggestions to get rid of this terrible stiffness/ vice feeling?

naynay30 yrs,
Have you looked for a lymphedema specialist? They are excellent with swelling.

I have to tell you that I had my BTKR on November 8th of 2007, and I was no where close to being ready to going to my family's large Thanksgiving dinner celebration.

It was, without a doubt, the worst Thanksgiving that I have ever had---my wife and children went, and I stayed home while under the influence of Oxycontin.

When they brought me back some food, the pain meds made it all tasted bland.

However, I have to tell you this---by Christmas, I was feeling much better---and Thanksgiving was far back in my mind. I enjoyed my family on Christmas Day, and missing Turkey Day seemed rather inconsequential because I was able to drive, to go to Christmas Eve Services, and to enjoy my family.

Things will get back to normal---and you will be able to enjoy your life and your family get-togethers again.

@naynay30 yrs. You forgot to post the link to the article your quoted. Also.....when quoting an article from any source, legal restrictions require that you not post the whole article....only about 20% of the content is permissible in order not to violate copyright laws. If you find something you want to post about, just write a couple of sentences about the content or make a short quote, put in the link, and let folks go there to read it.

I'm at 2 mos.
120 ROM, extension 0.
But swelling and stiffness is so bad it's miserable! I do stretches every hour walk around house a lot and ride bike a few times a day for 10 min. But I really shy away from doing things outside the house cause my knee is so uncomfortable . I'm going bonkers in the house and depressed!
Time I know it takes time.
I bought a tens machine. Suppose to help pain( mine is very low ) and swelling. Going to try and find someone who does lymphatic massage for swelling.

@naynay30 yrs.
You could try a search on google for licensed lymphedema specialists in San Diego, or massage therapists specialising in lymphedema.

Just entering lymphedema San Diego on Google brought up a lot of sites when I tried.

New question.
I've been on dilaudid for 2mos since TNR. Pain has decreased a lot so I've only been taking one maybe 2 aday.
I was down to every 6 hrs before that.
I'm feeling like I'm having some withdrawal symptoms. Anxiety being the biggest one.
Doc didn't say anything about weaning off. Anyone experience this??

My pain has greatly reduced but the terrible stiffness and remain . I've stopped pain Meds but getting oh! So frustrated! 8 wks out TNR

Why are you choosing to stop your pain medications when you are still having discomfort? If you stop a narcotic cold turkey, you may get withdrawal symptoms. Why not ask your GP or surgeon for a step down drug such as Tramadol to use for the stiffness (a form a pain) that you still have. Your posts about your knee actually sound like it's doing really well. See if you can find something else (books, movies, crafts, friends, television) to get your mind on something other than your knee. You're focusing way too hard on it....and making yourself miserable when you should be rejoicing that you have the range of motion you have with little serious pain.
