Hi all,
I had my right hip replaced in December of 2010. After a few uncomfortable months of recovery, I have been pleased as punch with my results. I've been able to do just about anything and have often been able to forget that I have a new hip! I've been riding my bikes (stationary and otherwise), walking, gardening, mowing, Geocaching, etc. and have felt great!

Monday of this week, I left the house and was heading to my car to run some errands. Suddenly, I was limping. Literally, I was fine one step and limping the next. No warning! I continued on to the store believing I could "walk it out" but that didn't work. I used the shopping cart as a crutch until I got home and then grabbed my old cane out of storage.

The pain is somewhat in the groin area, and down the front of my thigh. I've experimented with different motions. I can lay down and lift my leg with no problem. I can rotate my leg in almost any direction with no pain and a quick two minutes pedaling my stationary bike did not hurt. I can bring my knee up to my chest (well, as far as my old body will let me anyhow) without any pain. The only thing that seems to hurt is weight bearing...standing or walking.

Yesterday, after 48 hours of this new situation, I saw my ortho doc. The pain was somewhat improved since Monday but it was still an issue and I was still needing my cane. X-rays showed that everything seems to be seated fine and the bones look healthy. He put me on a regimen of toradol for up to 5 days and I will be having blood work done on Monday. (Have to wait for the B vitamins to be out of my system.)

I do have a metal on metal implant but not one that has been involved in a recall. I have no other symptoms.

I did do a little more than normal over the weekend. I helped lift a fairly heavy piece of furniture, I played horseshoes, I mowed the lawn, and went up and down quite a few stairs. I felt fine after doing all that, however.

Just before I went to the store on Monday afternoon, I put on my sneakers and crossed my feet up over my other leg to do that. I've done that numerous times since the surgery with no problems. ( My doc says I have NO range of motion restrictions.) I probably walked about 50 feet after that before the pain hit. Does anyone think that could be the cause? :umm:

Needless to say (but I'll say it anyway), I am very disappointed and frightened. I was SO very happy with the way I was feeling and now... :cry4: I think I would actually feel better about it if I had fallen or had some other definitive thing I could blame this on. Having it happen out of the blue is very disconcerting.

Has anyone else experienced something like this?

Hi Sheila,

Welcome to Bonesmartt!

Im still to new with my hip to relate to your sudden onset to pain, there are quite a few members on here that might be able to shed some light of offer advice. I'm wondering if it's muscle related....pure guess forgive me. I definitely feel for you right now, hopefully it's an easy cure.

Glad you joined us and look forward to getting to know you better!

All the best,

Sarah

Hope this works out for you.....Maybe you just pulled a muscle or somthing I woud hope if it was me..keep us posted!!:prayer1:

Sheila, so sorry to hear you have this sudden problem. But please try not to worry. The chances are very good that it is some type of soft tissue problem. You know, those things can happen even with a natural hip joint!

You were right to go see your doctor just to be sure. He was right to order some blood work and to do an xray to check the implant.

Take the meds, rest a bit and try and be patient. Please do let us know how you're doing!!!

I'm going to tag Josephine so that she can see your post quickly and comment.

Hi Sheila!
I know how scary and frustrating it can be to be doing so well and then have a setback. I'm glad you had that Xray. I had some annoying pain issues in my left hip last year and seeing the Xray did calm me down. One thing you said jumped out at me.....Lifting heavy furniture?? I can hurt myself lifting my potted plants so now that is Mr. Caroline's job, ha ha! :th_heehee: It sounds like you overdid it. Also. when I tweak myself, I don't really feel anything until two days later and then I say to myself "Why did I do that?" I'm sure you will be fine but do take things easy. I'm having a bit of a knee issue and I'm supposed to rest this weekend and I know that's hard to do!!

Sheila I think you have answered your own question. I have experienced discomfort after lifting. Then you went on to do more! I'll bet a bit of rest and maybe some meds for the pain and you will be right as rain.

Jo is away from the forum but will be back this weekend. Please don't worry but do keep us updated!

Hallo, Sheila,

Very sorry to hear about your pain and discomfort, with accompanying worry and fear. Most of have been in A Very Dark and Spooky Place for many months, if not years, and all we can do is to try to help each other, given that quite a few of us are stupid or three sheets to the wind, not you, of course. I really meant me and anybody else who fits the description. So the last thing you should expect is knowledgeable medical advice. So, here goes.

I read your account of your mishap and consequent treatment. It seems you and the medical people have done appropriate things, and let's hope they lead to a happy result. I think they will.

However, if you turn to "staffsknot story so far", Post 81, you will find a sad little tale of how a mishap of mine nearly spoiled a day out in Chester with Glenys and a friend. The tale is nowhere near as serious as yours, but it has this in common.

We are both active people. We want to get back to doing hiking and other energetic things. It doesn't take much to convince ourselves that we are indestructible again.

Next, I was getting out of a car and hurrying to a meeting with a friend.
Next, you were leaving the house to get into a car and "run" some errands.

Common factor is that neither of us carried out a sensible warm up before attempting a brisk activity. Our soft tissues took a terrible beating a year and a bit ago. Maybe they will never regain full strength and elasticity. We both, ahem! I don't know how to put this delicately, are of a Certain Age, mine being more than a touch more certain than yours.

The conclusion must be that when we are about to do something that our doubtful injured tissues may find stressful, we must do what dogs do. They seldom just get up and run around straightaway, but stretch themselves carefully. Surely nobody is going to tell me that we don't possess the same level of common sense as a dog!

This is not meant to be an accusation. When we feel great,it is easy to forget what we have recently been through. Our mangled tissues are lying in wait for us, like an unexploded bomb, waiting for an injudicious move, and when it comes they are ready to pounce.

I believe that's what happened to me. Imagine you are a sleek, red setter and do the moves. That way we might all reduce the amount of time we have to suffer these setbacks.

Good luck with it all, and get well soon.

All the best, Alan

Hi Sheila. I tend to agree that you just over did it a bit...probably twisted or turned a bit the wrong way. Honestly, I'd be feeling just like you and I think it's going to resolve itself just as quickly as it came. You sure did a lot that weekend and good for you !

I'd try some OTC meds and rest up, ice or heat if you can pinpoint the area that is making you limp. Bet you'll be good as new in no time. Good luck :thumb:!

Thanks to all who have answered and for your words of encouragement.

Staffsknot...your post gave me a much needed chuckle. I went back and read all of your story. Thank you so much for sharing all of that and in such an amusing way!

The hip is feeling better and, most of the time, I can walk around the house without my cane now. I still feel an odd twinge in the muscles (I think) around the front/side of my lower thigh.

I have a horrible dread of the pain racing back at any moment. So, I'm being extremely cautious about my every movement. My confidence level is in the dumps!

Sheila

Oh Sheila honey, so sorry that your confidence levels are felling a bit on the down side, but you know that is not a bad thing :)

I truly believe that the body and the mind work together and when the body is ready to take the next confidence step physically, the mind will be there supporting it... You have come a long way, still early days.

Be kind to yourself honey :)

Sorry to hear you are in pain but I would like to share something with you. I moved some funiture this week and I am sore. My hip really hurt yesterday. It better today. I have a doctor appointment this next week. Do be careful. We would like to think that we are healed so we can do whatever we want but do remember all the stuff our muscles had to go thru with getting a new hip. It wil take a longer time I believe to be ready for the heavy stuff. Just a subjection. I do hope this is just a bump in the road. Seattle is a beautiful place and with Spring coming enjoy the wonderful weather. Take care and stay safe. :doggieshmooze:Tashia:friends:

Hi Sheila,

It's great to hear your pain has now eased a lot.

Just want to say thankyou for posting. Previously I would think nothing of lifting heavy furniture and would have presumed I could do so again after the recovery period but now I will be more careful and think before I try to lift anything heavy.:thumb:

Hi Sheila, I hope that your improvement continues. As others have said I'm sure it will be some sort of soft tissue damage but it's good to hear that your doctor took things seriously.

I hope it's not too long before your confidence builds again. I think most of us can empathise with the dread of the pain returning. Please let us know how you are getting on.

Hi Sheila

Nice to see you back although under circumstances you didn't want, nice to hear things are improving slightly. when you get these set backs It is always better to slow things down until you have healed.

Billy

I really appreciate all the supportive posts! I have put a nix on all future furniture moving. I told my hubby that even if I think I can do it, I'm not going to do it...and that's that! :yes 4:

Today's news is more pain again. I haven't done anything to aggravate my hip/leg, yet it has flared back up. I sat for an hour in church and got up so stiff that I could barely move. On the way back to the house we stopped at the home improvement store. Since it has been doing nothing but raining in my neck of the woods, I decided some walking around the mega store, with a cart as support, would give my leg a much needed stretch without the need for an umbrella and galoshes! It worked quite well and I got in about 20 minutes of casual walking. The discomfort seemed to ease. However, by the time we got home 30 minutes later, I was so stiff and sore I could barely move and the pain was back in the groin area.

It seems that every time I sit and then get up to move, the pain and stiffness is in a new place...yet always between my knee and my groin area. Aargh!

Ah, well, tomorrow will be a new day!

Sheila

Shiela......you say you "did nothing," but let me tell you that extended periods of sitting can be the pits when you have strained your leg. Have you tried icing? You could also take the ol' BoneSmart Cocktail for a few days on a regular schedule. Give it time.....it will get better.

That's a sorry tale and I can only imagine how unsettling it has been for you. I would suggest the following:
1. have at least three weeks on almost no activity other than short walks a few times a day
2. use the cocktail Jamie linked you to
3. if, after one month's time, things are not improved considerably, then you should find yourself a revision surgeon to get a second opinion

But time is a great healer! :wink1:
