Will new knees be good enough?

Gene,

Congratulations on all of your achievements! I am so happy things are going so well for you!:yahoo:

I am becoming a "gym rat," again! I used to be an athlete and the "old fire" has kicked back in! Losing weight, eating healthy, and exercising are actually fun! (gosh never thought I would say that!):hysterical:

I just have to get that knee to stop buckling and popping out and everything will be wonderful!:wink1:

The bike ride did you a great deal of good---not only physiologically, but psychologically, as well. You did some light exercise; you kept the joint nice and loose; you built strength, and most importantly, you did something that you really enjoy!

Full day of work today, came home and rode 12 mile on the road bike. A friend was able to ride tonight. I feel much more comfortable and safe riding with a buddy.

Ride was great, knee no problem. Energy is improving every day.

I am icing as I type.

Almost forgot scale says down 24 lbs since surgey. Got another 50 to go.

I have found that , much like you, the bike ride is much more enjoyable the more weight that I lose!

Keep up the great work, Big Gene! You are moving forward!

Great job Gene!:snork:

Congrats on the weight loss! It feels so good to get the pounds off doesn't it? More energy, and more life!:yahoo:

Wow Gene - you have really come a long, long way. From doubting the surgery to a full days work AND a bike ride! Well done. You have taken back your life!

It's definitely cool that I have recovered so quickly so far. I have listened to my body but kept extending my effort. Despite the rest, elevating, icing and exercise I think it is clear that there is no formula that will insure a quick recovery.

Sure we can make things worse by over-doing it. Not giving our bodies the rest it needs. The the best we can do is based on luck, genetics and probably the condition of the knee to begin with. Maybe even surgical technique helps.

The important thing for everyone reading this thread to know is that WE ALL HEAL DIFFERENTLY and at different rates. I don't believe we can speed up the initial recovery. We can only slow it down by doing things wrong.

Failure to make the same fast progress that I or others have achieved does not mean those who heal more slowly have done anything wrong.

The important thing to remember is that we will mostly achieve what we want.

Less pain,
Doing ativities that we gave up,
Doing activities that we want to try
Most importantly, living our lives the way we want without arthritis pain.

What is AMAZING is all the info, and support that the Smarties provide that make our recoveries easier than doing it alone.

Gene, you high mileage rider you. :wink1: Next week you'll probably complete a century.

Your progress is amazing as is your resolve to do so much so early.

Keep us posted on your epic rides. :thumb:

I know how you feel Gene... Its probably a good thing I did mine through the winter, as I'd have probably hurt myself with warmer weather (which we are still waiting for!!!).

Gene, have you ever reread your first few posts in this thread? Makes interesting reading by comparison with these last few!

Josephine has a very valid point! Look back at what you wrote earlier and see where you are today. You are making tremendous progress and you attitude is helping many others who are coming on board.

I understand and appreciate the story of this thread. I believe my aprehension, fear, anxiety and concerns were legitimate. I am sure that many who come to this site have the same feelings.

I think my journey reflects the emotional and analytical path that many of us travel in making the decision to have these surgeries. The thread iis long and I wonder if those that come to the site can benefit from my experience. Perhaps the thread is too long to be of value.

I have been very fortunate in my recovery. That recovery does not "prove" that the anquiish of the decision process was wrong.

In my opinion it is important that those suffering from arthritis make a rational, rather than emotional decision. We all need to be prepared for recoveries that can be very difficult.

I feel it is important that readers can read about both extremes.

That said, I go back to my surgeon on Tuesday and intend to discuss scheduling knee # two. My anxieties and concerns from back in December return. I make no assumptions that the second time around will be like knee #1. That is scary!

Another interesting observation is that even where I am at 6 weeks I have begun to forget the details of those first days. Fortunately, my negative memories seem to fade quickly.

So, yes I have re-read the thread. Much has changed and yet in many ways the question still remains.

Will both my knees be good enough?

I do believe that they can be. Doing nothing will not lead to improvement.
TKR certainly is a better choice for me than doing nothing.

Gene, you are another inspirational fellow to us all. I still seem to be a lot more than a week behind you, but I take comfort in knowing that I too will get to where you are. Continue with the great recovery.

Excellent post, Gene!!! It is so thrilling to hear that you are doing this well. You are definitely a BoneSmartie now with a healthy dose of reality about how recovery may go for that second knee. But, it could just as easily be another sterling recovery too. In the end, you will meet your goal of having TWO good knees to enjoy for many years to come. That is the most important thing.

And, as for the length of your thread.....I think it's fine. People who come to BoneSmart like you did initially are eager to read and I believe your journey will be a huge benefit to those folks.

Posting in forums helps keep some of those memories. I had to go back and re-read a lot from my local forums to see where I was at during different phases. I even cut and pasted from those forums into a text file that I need to cleanup and might paste in my own thread for a timeline.

Gene, you're doing great.

Gene, thanks for your post and thoughts. I am just days away now from the second TRKR. The left has been just wonderful and a real gem. I know the right one is totally different in its feel. I just pray and hope it will go as well. But like you said, you can't do anything about it, and that is the courage part of it too. Sometimes it is better to try and maybe even not achieve the most optimal results than to never try at all. I know I will be better off in the end. It is a trip of dedication. I think my family is ready, (the house just about) and my attitude. It is a go!!
