TKR Whimsy's Recovery Thread.......

Well home PT released me yesterday and I feel a bit discouraged. I had 86 degrees backwards Tuesday then on Friday it was a whopping 75 !! I know numbers are not important, but it is what the medical field looks at. I start out patient on Tuesday and I am a little worried. I have noticed the scar was a little more zig zaggy than usual, does that mean I was very swollen? I spent a lot of time icing as I will today. The dreaded manipulation was mentioned, yes it freaked me out. So I need some encouraging please. Let me hear from some slow ROM people.

Hi Mari, sounds like you are recovering nicely. You're so right, it is difficult but doable. I'm sure your grandson was one of the motivators for your surgery. I have 4 Grandchildren and there is nothing on this side of heaven like them!! Have a great day and keep up the good work.

Looks like we posted at the same time. Please don't be discouraged. You are still early in the game of recovery. See what your outpatient PT says when you start with him. My ROM was only a little more than yours after 2 weeks, but after 4 more weeks in outpatient PT, it greatly improved. Hopefully yours will, too and manipulation won't be necessary. Hang in there!!

Just got back from my first outpatient PT, may I say not as bad as I had feared. Evidently my extension is amazing, who knew. My back is about 75 comfortable which was more than I thought it was. So I guess just my normal movements is increasing it. I have 9 exercises to do at home 2-3 times a day and I know I am pretty good at following that.

The hardest part of today so far was getting up with an alarm, remembering how to put on makeup and fix my hair :tada: . Oh it is the small things that keep me going.

I'm glad therapy went OK today. It will get easier each time. And I just want to tell you that you have the prettiest smile-don't see how anyone could resist smiling back!! Take care and do your exercises.:dancy:

Deb, Thank you so very much. Smiling is one of my favorite things to do . When I was waiting for surgery a few of our our church members were waiting with us. A nurse came in and said what a good mood I was in. Paul spoke up and said I was the most joyful person he knew. It is easy when you know Who always has me covered.

Yesterday I sure did overdo it. Out patient PT, no nap (really cant believe the no nap one), then cooked for the family. Made homemade chicken tenders and couscous with summer veggies, way too much standing. After dinner the grandchild and I took a ride on the walker through the yard. (I walked he rode)

Today I think it is rest and elevate with some ice thrown in for good measure.

Oh no, the dreaded overdoing! I think you've got the right idea for today but you forgot one thing--NAP! I know you enjoyed your night with family though and after a nice restful day, you'll be good as new. Have a blessed Wednesday~~Tennessee hugs coming to Kentucky!

OK guys I really need some assistance, 3 weeks after surgery and I still have no appetite. Today I have forced myself to eat a half a peanut butter and honey sandwich at about noon then just now 7 hours later I chocked down half a grilled burger. Food makes me just physically ill. I don't snack in between, I just plain do not eat. After cooking last night for the family I had about a a 1/4 cup of squash and couscous. No one noticed I have become an expert at pushing food about.

I just need some help here guys. I am scaring myself. I have always been a great eater, (too Much actually) I know I can't heal if I don't eat. But I can't eat cause I start to gag.

Editing this to add a few things:

I can and do eat yogurt, Greek with fresh fruit.

I am still on painkillers

I was the same way. Could go all day and not eat, and when I did, I would just eat a little. I actually lost some weight(not near enough). Just in the last couple of weeks, I find myself wanting to eat everything that is not nailed down. I'm going to have to watch out or I will gain back the weight. I don't know if it was the pain meds, or what, but your appetite will return (hopefully not with a vengeance). I never got sick or gagged or anything, just couldn't eat. Just try to eat healthy when you want something (yogurt is good) and of course, drink lots of water. I have run across several on here who didn't have an appetite who also lost some weight.

I never lose my appetite but I did right after surgery for a couple of weeks. Try to eat whatever you can find that doesn't gross you out even if it's just a little bit at a time. Try to get some protein in. yogurt and fruit sound healthy. It wouldn't hurt to have someone else fix you something to eat. I found myself a little more interested when someone else brought me something. Possibly the energy drain also drains your appetite.

Went to the store after PT today. I bought things I thought I would eat. Greek Yogurt (love Fage), granola, cherries then went to farmers market and got a watermelon and a cantaloupe. I also purchased some protein powder to see if I can make smooties. The girls at PT said it is perfectly normal for some to loose their appetite.

Tonight it is fresh corn and tomatoes with a steak.

Grammy59 and Kneeper thanks for you input.

Hi Whimsy3 I'm a little over 4 weeks out from a BTKR and it's only been this past couple of days that I am able to eat any amount. I managed to eat a full serving at dinner 2 nights in s row! I mostly pick during the day. I found dried mango, a few crackers or a yogurt filled me up. Another strange thing was I didn't drink much. I always drank lots of water but after my op I drank less and less. It's only now that is returning to normal.
I'm sure you'll soon be eating well again. It just takes time for the body to get over it's shock from the abuse of surgery.

4 weeks out and it seems to be the week for great changes. I am finding food appealing again (still don't crave sweets), I walk with assistance of a cane. PT is going well also, they never pull or push me to hurting.(she said they found it counter-productive since and extreme pushing just flares the knee back up again) Last week I was at 74 this Monday it was 96!!!

I walked down to the garden this weekend  (it is a steep hill) and now take a nightly 15 walk around the yard. I do use the huge walker, but it is very uneven and I'd rather be safe. The most impressive thing I have done: knelled at the side of my bed!! The bad/good knee was barely touching, but it sure felt great.

Great news, girl!! Glad you are doing so well, keep up the good work. Seems like when you get to the point that you can do some of the normal things, you feel so much better! Take care.

Well I fell into the "doing to much" phase of recovery. Not sure why I thought walking down (as in hill)to the garden was a great idea. I have been reminded over and over again it was not!! I really have been taking it easy this week, still exercising. I get so frustrated at PT cause I still can't do a full rotation on the bike. I know ROM will come but still....

Today was our little towns homecoming and it is always a fun place to go. Our son came down to pick me up he drove his SPORTS CAR!!!!! I took one look and said I can't get in that. With all the compassion in the world he looked at me and said "fine then we will hook the walker up and drag you"!!!! Hey I actually surprised myself and got in a little short car and out too :happydance: I had a great time went to the pancake breakfast then walked to a friends house to watch the parade. Got to see the wonderment in grandson's eyes at his first parade. Did I mention it rained during the whole parade? We all got soaked, but had a blast.

That is why I had my knee replaced and today was worth every minute of it.

LOL!! I would have gotten in that little car any way, too, so as not to be dragged!! Too funny! I know you had a good although tiring day. Catch up on your rest and such tomorrow afternoon. There's nothing like seeing wonder in the eyes of your grandchild, is there? Take care, whimsy3.

Good morning, I'm in my 7 week, and it all gets better, I still have my shower chair, can't part with it, I can stand ok, just love to sit and have the shower running over me for relaxation, we have water restrictions, I choose to forget about that.. Lol I'm bad. I have 3 grandchildren, love when they come to visit me, totally forget I have had a TKR. I find every day is different, make life a little interesting. Got the lady's today, going slow. But that's ok, no place to go. Have a great positive day. Regards from Leonie, from Down Under. XO
