What to do

Hi Hipsy, just jumping on the exercise part of the thread. In addition to the recumbent bike, i was also able to do the elliptical trainer. I also had some special exercises to keep my glutes strong and try to keep up my range of motion, but as my surgery neared, those became painful and I cut back on them. I was still able to do bridge exercises all the way until day before surgery: https://www.acefitness.org/exerciselibrary/49/glute-bridge

You might have to experiment and see what works for you. If it bothers you too much, then don't do it.

Good luck!

thanks poppet its looking that way isnt it :what: :iagree:

thanks cnydutch i have heard the bike is good for you before and after ,better start looking for one :bicycle1:

hi nerdgrrl thanks for the info i have been trying to do the bridging exercises but my body doesnt like it very much i find that when i try to do the exercises i get a increase in the amount of pain i am experiencing on that day :yikes:

Hipsy, if it hurts, stop and back off a little.. the old saying of 'no pain, no gain' doesn't apply to hip replacement surgery.. slow and steady wins this race..even at 12 months post I get those little 'ouch events' :)

You will get there in your own time and listening to your body is the best you can do to know your boundaries with recovery :)

hi poppet thats what i have been doing, then feel frustrated because i know i need to be doing them , i find when i have hydro i can do leg swings to a certain degree and marching on the spot but then cant walk for a few days lol makes you think is it really worth it " at least my left buttock pain has decided to give me a break today :happydance:well till later anyway x

Oh hydro is so good, but as you (and myself) have found out, because we are weightless, it is so easy to say... oh, I will just do another 10 mins or so.. then pay for it later.. experienced this many times :)

Patience is a very hard lesson to learn with THR recovery... but time ticks over and your body will recover :)

hi just a quick update , had consultation today with my os and had another xray taken which shows there are now 7 cysts!! 6months ago there was 5 , we have now decided to proceed with a thr as he said it has also flattened out not sure what this actually means ? so the nxt step is my pre op , the os says it would probably be a ceramic on ceramic prothesis , i am going to admit, im very nervous any hugs and words of advice is greatly appreciated :merrychr:

Hi Hipsy, :friends:
Having the hip replaced is so worth it. :xmasdance: We all get nervous before, its just the norm. At some point in your recovery, you are going to say duh what did I wait for. :what: I am 7 months on the other side and life is a joy again. :happydance: No more pain. :yes!:

Pat :sleigh:

hi oakview neighbour :snork: thanks for the reply regarding the recovery how long would you say the roughest part lasts for and do you mind me asking what was the defining reason to go ahead with your replacement , and what am i likely to experience difficulty with the most :thankyou: :sos: x

Hi Hipsy, The first few days were the roughest part for myself. A medication reaction made for a itchy day or two. My catheter backed up four time. :gaah:

My hip was totally gone and in the final stage of AVN. I went from minor pain every once in a while with my osteoarthritis to walking with a severe limp in weeks. The pain was terrible.

I was broke and now I have a beautiful shinny hip. :yahoo:

A good preparation of you home for your recovery is helpful.

hi oakview neighbour thanks so much for your imput :dancy: im hoping to be able to do this after !!! lol , i figured at least a couple of wks to start feeling a little back to normal , i have already started getting little bits and pieces i think i may need for the first couple of wks into recovery , anybody else suggest things which may come in handy? i must admit my hip seems to be deteriorating rapidly lately especially the last month maybe its because i know it needs doing  i tend to be having a lot of buttock pain but only on the side that has the arthritis in   has anybody suffered with really bad tail bone pain ? :bells: :chrisglitter: :giftsa:

Roughest parts of recovery? for me, nothing post-op came close to that pre-op bone on bone pain. When you wake up in recovery you'll have the biggest grin when you realize that old painful hip is a thing of the past.

The bikes, both stationary and "real" have been the very best thing for me. Good cardio, and also seems to loosen up the hip without pain.

I always tell folks Hipsy that it is a personal decision, but look at your life now and what activites you have had to curtail or stop altogether, that is time that you will not get back. The THR recovery process is just a blip on the radar screen compared to the years you are limited in doing the things you love. There have been folks here that ride and have gotten back to it, using common sense. Welcome to the forum and happy holidays

[Bonesmart.org] What to do Hipsy, I had terrible buttock pain--half a block and I was cramping there and the pain would radiate all the way down to the ankle. I actually put up with this for more than 5 years!:headbang: Not too bright!! I knew when I woke up from my surgery that that pain was gone, and I have never experienced it since. I could have kicked myself for being so butt-headed. And my hubby had kept telling me to go get something done about it. I got a very large part of my life back that I'd had to give up. I would do it again in a heartbeat----actually I got both my knees done 11 months later. So between my three surgeries, I now truly HAVE A LIFE!

Buttock pain!,,, yes...and it had me doubting a million and one times whether this was really hip arthritis. Cannot tell you how many times I have Googled buttock pain in relation to hip arthritis.

I can just add to the previous posts, buttock, groin, pain radiating down the full length of my leg, lots of tears, no sleep, more tears...

Fast forward 13 months, apart from a few 'ouch' moments, I will not hesitate to get my left hip done in 2013.

This morning I went for my Nordic Walk just as dawn was breaking, birds were chirping, it was cool and fresh, not a human to be seen...

Life is good!

You too will have this to look forward to :)

hi all thanks for all the replies :) i am so glad i found this site it has been so helpful , knitter4444 i know exactly what you mean , its a constant pain like someone has given you a good boot up the backside !! many times i have had to sit on 2 cushions just to soften the blow to sit lol , poppet did you get pain in your shin bone aswell? i sometimes have that , bottomshallow what about you ? bellaroma thanks for the words of encouragement as sometimes i feel like i am about 70yrs old and as i am only 42 that isnt a great feeling" no offence intended to our golden oldies just a figure of speech" sissy you seem to really rate the bike as a good form of gentle exercise pre-op and post op i think i will be investing in one :merrychr: :gbhse:x

Poppet I know what you mean! If my adorable OS ever said I needed the other one replaced, I'd say, "How about tomorrow?" Of course, I hope that won't happen, just saying....

Hipsy, I am 66 and feel 36 with my new hip---when you get yours, I bet you'll feel 22! The bike, both stationary and "real" are terrific. I do prefer the real bike.
