THR Week Three After LTHR!

Did a little dusting and vacuuming around the house and one session of pt and of course I am now paying for it.
Please ease into activities like this. Household chores AND PT = too much too soon. Your body is telling you this now. You might want to go back and read the mantras posted on this thread.

I'm one week ahead he had mine done December 1st .Stick with it I'll bet you'll do great next . Is 35 days post surgery and just the last couple days things really started to turn the corner I am able to do my stretching exercises 3 times a day I walk a mile and a half every morning at the mall and then take two shorter walks throughout the course of the day. My pain just begin to subside rapidly in the last couple days as well. I never thought having two new hips in the last four months could be this good.

That's the tricky part of it. As you start to feel better, if you do too much, you pay for it. Usually with rest, meds, and ice, the pain will go away in a short time. It takes a lot of patience and self restraint to recover from this surgery. It's worth it, though.

@determined21 Good for you!! I'm hoping next week will be that corner for me! I'm due back at work on January 19th. Can't imagine sitting for six hours with the gluteal pain i'm experiencing now. But I will take it easy and rest as Jaycey recommended so that I'm in shape to go back to work.

Glad to hear you're so well. Dusting isn't bad at all, it's the vacuuming you need to be careful of. Please take your time....

Thanks @zachs mema. You are totally right...as is everyone else. I need to take my time with this recovery. Not overdo it and focus on getting better.

Question to all of you. When I first started doing pt, I noticed that the affected leg was longer than my other leg. I just figured that naturally the leg is swollen because of the surgery and therefore would be longer. Has anyone ever experienced this and is it normal?

Amd,

Yes, I believe most people feel the swelling. I was measured today, and I was off a little bit. The physical therapist said she hears this all the time. Mine is just slightly off, but he said I will feel like it's more off. If that sentence can be understood. He wants me to do an exercise that will help.
wow, you're going back to work soon. Are you in any pain? Do you feel strong enough? I'm not in any pain, I just have discomfort sometimes.

Get some rest.

Thanks for your quick reply @zachs mema! Yes..I am scheduled to go back to work on 1/19. At this point I'm not sure whether I can do that based on the pain when sitting. Which I'm told is normal, but if you read this thread you will see I experienced that before the surgery and was hoping having the surgery would solve this. I don't believe it's sciatica because of the symptoms. Yes..I'm in pain. Usually towards the end of the day after pt and movement around the house. I take my meds and am icing and elevating regularly. Here's to hoping that I will be in better shape in two weeks when I'm supposed to be going back to work!

By the way, what exercise was given to you to help with the leg length issue?

Hi amd

I understand the pain, before and after. My groin was on fire, I limped, it was awful. The discomfort I have now is where I was cut, and muscle pain. If you still have pain, I would tell the dr before he releases you for work. I could not imagine sitting at work and being hurt. This particular exercise hurts like crazy. I'm told to hold onto something and then push my right hip out from the side and hold for twenty seconds. I will do this, but if I was you, don't. You might need different exercises. I'm hoping yours is just swollen, and will be perfect soon.

No vacuuming

It's normal for it to be uncomfortable or painful to sit. I was the same way. Most of these issues just take time and rest. My surgeon recommended returning to work after six weeks, which for me was ideal. Many people seem to feel pressured to get back sooner. I think that can make the recovery more stressful. I know we all have to do what we have to do, and the bills need to be paid.

Hey there @zachs mema! This exercise...is it a standing side leg lift...and then holding for 20 seconds? I do side leg lifts now..part of my pt session. I don't hold it..just bring it back down.

And yes...the pain before the surgery was horrible. Towards the end there I could barely walk up the stairs. I have bad knees as well so I have a double whammy going on. Hopefully after all the healing has taken place this will not be the case.

I know we all have to do what we have to do, and the bills need to be paid.

Oh yes @Hip Hip Hooray! That is definitely my main concern. I'm still waiting for my disability checks. I can't believe how long it takes now to get them. I've been on disability once when I had my gallbladder removed in 2004 and I got my first check within a few weeks. You would think with today's technology things would process quicker.

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one feeling this pain when sitting. Did you have the pain before you had your surgery or just afterwards?

Good evening everyone! Had a good day today. Ran a couple of errands and did some laundry. Even managed a session of pt. Only did one since I did a lot today. As usual I have a few questions to ask the experts here on Bonesmart.

@Josephine and @Jaycey , I was wondering if one of you could answer them for me.

I suffer with osteoarthritis and about six months back the blood tests that my rheumatologist took came back with high liver enzymes. He took me off the Mobic which was miserable because it's the only arthritis medication that actually helped. I did a little research and found that turmeric is a great herbal option for arthritis. I found an organic herbal pill on the website where I get my vitamins. I was surprised to find that it actually worked. My trigger finger went away and my hands felt great. However, as I'm sure you know I had to stop taking it before the surgery. My rheumatologist will not call a script for Mobic in for me because I haven't seen him since August. I am unable to get to his office at this point in time.

PS...I was sent to a gastro in September who found that my bile duct was too narrow and he snipped it and a month later my liver enzymes were completely normal. So I am able to take the Mobic now. Anyway my question is can I start taking the turmeric pills again? I called my ortho but he won't be in the office until Tuesday and for whatever reason the other orthos there cannot answer this question for me.

My other question...how long do I have to keep icing? And can I ice anywhere on the affected leg or does it have to be just the hip area. The actual incision site seems to have gone down where I can barely feel the incision through my pants. The only area that seems to have swelling is my thigh. Should I apply the ice there or on the hip where everything stems from? I hope this makes sense.

You should get instructions from your surgeon on this.

As long as you need to! And yes, ice other areas that feel swollen. My knee hurt worse than my incision site post RTHR. I iced it for weeks post-op.

Being a herbal remedy, I really don't see why you needed to stop taking it pre-surgery. But of course you can take them again.
So I am able to take the Mobic now.
Mobic is actually an NSAID which has problems of it's own, quite serious once, actually - Medications: acetaminophen (Tylenol, paracetamol) and NSAIDs, differences and dangers. So if tumeric works, I suggest you stick with that instead of the Mobic. Much safer.

Hello Jo! I was told i needed to stop all herbal and vitamins a week before the surgery. I already started the turmeric pills. Within two days my trigger finger was all fixed. That stuff is a miracle herb!! The only problem is that i have the knees of an 80 year old (words said to me by my rheumatologist) and the turmeric pills don't really help the knees. i will hope off on the mobic and give the turmeric pills a chance to work Thanks for our advice!!

Had my first outpatient pt session today. I'm feeling really good about my new therapist. He is very experienced in working with patients that have had hip replacements, so that is a great relief for me. He seemed very knowledgeable and didn't make me do too much today. But he is a huge proponent of pt and believes it really helps with gaining strength, flexibility and the correct mobility in the affected leg. i did take your advice and told him that if what he's doing hurts, i will not continue doing it so i set my barriers with him. He totally agreed. I'm excited about this next adventure in my recovery process. Feeling good today. Went into work for a couple of hours and even stopped at the local Shoprite to pick up a few things we needed at the house and I'm not dying of pain. I did my pt and immediately came home, took my meds and started icing. It looks like that's going to be the routine over the next four weeks!!

Thank you all again for all your advice and input..it is greatly appreciated!

Well..today is another day. Sorry I haven't posted in a while..life just got in the way. Did one session of pt and am paying the price now. Having really bad pain when sitting. My entire left leg is swollen and this arthritis is just killing me and getting in the way of my recovery because my knees are bad. So bad that they hurt to the touch. I ordered the turmeric and it should be here tomorrow. You can bet that I will be taking it as soon as it arrives This cold weather doesn't help any. Anyone know of a state that is warm with low humidity? Because I need to move there! ugh
