Bilateral TKR Two new knees!

Hello @dsteff22
How are you getting on? We haven't heard from you for a few days.

Well, I was plugging along doing just fine until last night and today. I was just about out of my oxycodone, so I reduced my dosage to make it last until I could get get a new prescription. That made for a rough night last night and today has been getting progressively worse :(
My doc replaced my oxycodone with norco (because of a severe itchy rash). I just took my first pill about an hour ago, but it has become painfully clear I went too long without some kind of relief.
I'm hurting right now, but I'm hoping I can get things back under control soon. Thanks for asking! Im praying I can send a more upbeat reply tomorrow.

@dsteff22 The Dr put me on norco at day 3 or 4, he figured if I could walk on those bad knees for as long as I did I could put up with some pain. 2/ norco. 5/325 every 4 hours was all I got! Yes, I had bilateral also! Hope you feel better tomorrow! I have had an amazing recovery and am back walking 5 miles a day at 3 months post. [emoji4]. Yes it can be done!

It is really too soon to cut back, but when you're running out of meds there's not much you can do. Hoping you can get the pain under control. Keep ice on the knees because that will help with pain as well.

ice is your best line of defense! agreed @KarriB ice and elevate will help . heel slides and just relax and heal.

Finishing up week 2 and it's had its share of ups and downs. I can honestly say week 2 was harder than week 1. Maybe it was the gloomy weather, or maybe the "blues", but I was just out of sorts all week. Overall my pain has been manageable and my swelling pretty mild. I have definitely embraced the bs mantras and have spent most of my time icing, resting and elevating!
I've had home PT visits, but the exercises have been mostly just heel slides and leg extensions. I'm doing pretty good at walking too.
My only concern is the difference in the 2 knees. My right knee is definitely improving, but my left knee, in some ways, is getting worse. I'm getting sharp pains on the inside near the bottom of the patella; ROM seems to be getting a little worse; and upon waking after more than a couple hours of sleep it is extremely painful to move my left knee.
My follow up appt. isn't until May 26th. I know that every knee is different, so for now I'll just keep living the BoneSmart way and hope things work itself out. Unless of course anybody has any other advice...

Bring on week 3!

The weather has been awful and I'm sure it added to your blues. But it seems you have the right mind set and in a week or two you'll start to see a bit more difference. You never know when the other knee will catch up.

@dsteff22. It is unlikely your knees will progress at the same speed. Throughout the last three and a half months my knees have swapped around as to which is the grumpy one and which is happily doing what it should. My right knee is currently my problem child, more swollen and painful than the other but slightly better rom. Go figure. This is a long slow journey, but we will get there in the end.

I'm not sure if I should tag anybody in this, but I have a question...
Is it normal that things can get worse for awhile for seemingly no apparent reason?
I've been having increasing pain in my left knee. Fairly sharp pain in more than one spot. My swelling has been minimal at most. And by that I mean neither knee appears swollen, but I can feel that there is some minor inflammation. Could there be internal swelling that I don't really see, but causing pain?
I'm almost 3 weeks post-op. My follow-up isn't for 2 more weeks. Should I try to get in sooner or let it go for now?
I've been very good about following the BoneSmart ways. I ice and elevate most of the day and night. My PT is light and includes mainly heel slides and extensions. I walk unassisted around the house and I haven't done anything strenuous.
Just looking for a little guidance.
Thank you!

Yes

Absolutely.

Sounds like you're rocking along just fine. No need to go to follow up early.

While these aches and pains pop up, you may be experiencing pain because you still need assistance while walking around the house at 3 weeks. Try using your walker or cane and see if the pain lessens.

@dsteff22 can you give us your surgical date so we can create a signature for you?

I've had great gains in rom and I'm off daytime narcotics, but I've had an increase in discomfort this week bc of the nerve pain/skin sensitivity around my site. Like anything brushing it causes me to react, so I'm on edge and stressed around my kids/pets and it feels like I went backwards. From reading here, it's all normal. 2 steps forward, 1 step back. And so forth.

@Jennszoo I had a few bumps in the road like yours, feeling like the skin is tight, nerve pain or sensitivity is par for this... I used icy hot on my lower legs away from the incision site, though the scar was completely healed. I am 4 months post and feel 90% better! keep your eye on the prize! things will get better
