THR Two New Hips in Six Weeks

Personally, I wasn't about to replace every pair of shoes I owned. And I didn't.
I only discarded the ones that I often wore as my hip deteriorated, my gait changed and I developed a limp.
I'd get rid of any that you wore frequently, due to the wear pattern. I've read over and again it can cause different aches and pains and I didn't care to risk it.
I ordered a pair of the same lightweight Nikes I'd been wearing for well over a year, almost 24/7 since my hips started to go south, and the difference was greater than one usually experiences with new athletic shoes (in a previously worn style). It might be a coincidence, but right around the time they arrived, the nocturnal achiness that periodically woke me up—an annoyance I like to call awakeyness—all but disappeared. It feels great to walk in my new sneakers. Thanks @Layla for the advice.

I took a photo of the old and the new. Maybe you can’t tell from a photo. Not unlacing them at all for four months stretched the old ones a bit more than usual. Anyway, happy to have gone to the gym a couple of times this week, and I can get up off the floor now without having to crawl to the nearest solid object. YES!!!

:heehee: There is a definite difference in the shoes. It's good you purchased a new pair.
Nice gym pic....Who looks like that at 70? I want some of whatever it is you're having, lol.
It's wonderful you're able to get up off the floor without crawling to something for support. You're doing great! Hoping your holiday season is all you want it to be and wishing you a happy, healthy 2019!
@EL11

Wishing you the same, @Layla !

Mind you, the getting up is not like those CSI shows where the investigators crouch down to inspect the crime scene and then spring right up, haha.

@EL11 You are such an inspiration!! :) Great that the new gym shoes are working well for you.

So glad to be able to read your posts to give me a boost at 4 weeds out second surgery! Just what I needed today. I'm so ready to do more, but my body doesn't have the energy! Doing well really, but want to be doing more!

Aw... glad to have helped and I fully understand. 4 weeks was a tough time for me. I am almost at the 3-month mark and walking fast (again) is still quite new. The home PT used to say things to me when I worried about my progress, like, “They tore the side of your body open!” and “They broke your bone!!!” Funny in a morbid way. But I took his point.

I find getting graphic necessary sometimes also.
Rather than saying "slow your roll" mentioning saws, drills, reamers usually causes one to pause....
If they have a pulse :heehee:
Have a great Friday!
@EL11

@EL11 I love your physio's visuals!!! LOL!! It is a good reminder of what our bodies have been through! It is wonderful and so helpful to have good physios. They make such a difference in recovery!

Walking with Zenith around the farm! Such a lovely companion! Love Albert in his Santa hat!!

You look so happy! All great news and hope it continues to go well.

I just looked at the heels of my usual go to office shoes and the heel is completely worn down on the outside left edge. Time for a new pair :-)

Funny you should mention CSI! I now am very jealous of those that can just spring to their feet. Takes me effort to get up if sitting too long and then I have to stand straight, gather myself and then start walking but getting better all the time. I can stand at cocktail parties now for some time. Haven’t been able to do that for two years! Onwards :-)

I remember being at a fancy LA event in 2016 and fully realizing that I could not stand comfortably for more than 15 minutes anymore. It was depressing. That was some time before I’d considered THR. So glad to hear you can do the long-term standing now, yay.

The operations would have been worth it even if I didn’t get any better than I am now, meaning no nighttime aches or random twinges in general ... but we’re not done healing yet!

Absolutely! My lazy old bod will just have to get used to more walking and movement generally.
The hardest thing is remembering getting up from my desk and walking for 5 minutes. Thursday I sat at it for 2.5 hours and was so stiff when I got up.... I think I need to set an alarm..

I need to stretch more after exercise, I think. I just changed PCPs and my new doctor warned me against walking on an incline on the treadmill; there is a bit of a hill on my loop around our block, too, and I wonder if that might be causing the back pain I've been waking up with in the wee hours. I have a heating pad in my Amazon cart right now; @Layla , I know you have used one. The instructions always say not to lie on it, but if there's a low setting and a one-hour shutoff, I'm thinking it might be OK, and might be time to change from ice to heat.

Daytime walking continues to be great. I was just reminded, @SurreyGirl , that your THR was right before my first one, and tomorrow will be three months out from my right THR. I also feel stiff when I've been sitting too long.

Thanks! Useful to know re the stiffness. I am sure it will get better. I am trying not to have painkillers but I think Josephine mentioned paracetamol was good for stiffness but will doublecheck. Just done the shopping and carried in three bags including stepping up our front doorstep. Did it in two goes to err on the safe side. Have a good Sunday!

:hi: It's Lefty's special day.
Happy Three Month Anniversary!
Hope you have a great day and week. I'm sure you'll be scurrying about like all the rest of us.
Pace yourself, I will too

Thank you from Lefty!!

Yes, I will :-)

Dorian Grey's sister? @EL11, do you have a mysteriously deteriorating picture in your attic you'd like to tell us about?

I can stand at cocktail parties now for some time. Haven’t been able to do that for two years!
I completely resemble this remark! Yes! I used to dread parties because standing and talking for more than 15 minutes was crippling. Ain't it nice to have that freedom?

I can get up off the floor now without having to crawl to the nearest solid object
This is one of my goals in life! Boy, wouldn't it be nice to be able to pick up dropped keys without having to kick 'em closer to the nearest coffee table?

Sounds like you're doing great with the walking - outstanding! Walking is the best, so much so that it's #1 in things I'm looking forward to getting back to as soon as I can shed this furshlugginer walker!

All the best!

Well it's only been ... FIVE DAYS!! At five days out I'm not sure if I could type a coherent sentence ;-) I hope your pain management is working; it varies quite a bit from person to person or hip to hip.
