@Layla you are so kind to keep track of us all!

Things are good; some achiness, but minimal and nothing like the arthritis pain was. I knew my whole body was out of whack from not being able to stand up straight or walk normally for so long; a week ago I suddenly noticed that my left knee had stopped throbbing. I'd been thinking Oh great, now that needs replacing too, I can't deal with it ... but now I think it was a result of my impaired gait.

Sometimes I do too much and then pay for it the next day, or more often during the night. I am getting out-patent PT at the hospital but she'll re-evaluate this week and probably sign me out, unless I want to wait a week as scheduled. At this point, I know what not to do and to take a day or two off if I overdo. One lesson I've learned, which I think I posted elsewhere, is that this is different from taking an aerobics class and knowing this or that muscle will be sore the next day. Your body may have a delayed reaction to what you think is mild activity; it's still healing. And it is not a straight line. Sometimes my right hip, which was done at the end of July, starts to throb; But on the other hand, all of a sudden one day I could climb stairs normally, boom.

Wishing you a great weekend and a Happy Thanksgiving too!

This is the way the recovery ball bounces, for sure.
You sound like all is on track and hopefully it all keeps getting better and better!:ok:

Thanks! And as a matter of fact, last night I wasn't woken by sore hips until I'd slept for around six hours; I went back to sleep for another two without Tylenol, and when I finally got up at 8am, the soreness was minimal.

When you're young, you don't realize what a gift it is to be walking around living your life without chronic pain (assuming that you're not afflicted with anything that would cause that). After a couple or more years of coping with 24/7 inflammation in your joints, then being able to do something about it, you do realize what a gift it is.

@EL11 Sounds like you have had another positive shift with your better night's sleep last night. So exciting when sleep comes along with out so much effort in making it happen!:)

Sorry to hear about your knee throbbing. I had something similar with right knee. The knee pain had started about two weeks before surgery. I kept icing it and really thought about heal to toe foot fall and that helped a lot. I can always tell when I'm not minding my heal toe placement, as the knee will start to hurt. As soon as I correct my footfall, it goes away!
Hope Albert is doing well :meow:Did he get some thanksgiving leftovers?!

Wishing you a comfortable weekend

It is, it is.

Yes, I know I had fallen into bad habits because I couldn't stand up straight. It does help to concentrate on walking properly until one gets used to it ...

I don't give Albert people food because when I did before, he hurled.

Wishing you the same!

@EL11 Forming new habits is hard, at least I find it requires a lot of focus!

Cleaning up kitty hurl....not fun . My Zenith goes out hunting during the day, and occasionally gets what the vet calls "a bad bird"! Pretty gross finding that in the heated tack/feed first thing in the morning!!

I have a shoe question. I searched for "shoe" and only found some posts about how to put on shoes ...

So here I am close to four months post-op for RTHR and two months +11 days past LTHR. I have close to zero pain during the day but still wake up at least once during the night with both hips aching. Last night it was just once and I was able to get back to sleep after just moving around a bit, no ice or Tylenol needed.

Those of you about the same amount of time out as I am, or who remember what it was like for you at this stage, when did you graduate from wearing sneakers 24/7? I am going to a talk in Worcester tonight and was thinking of wearing boots or my Ecco slip-on shoes. Either of these options involves a modest heel, like 1.5-2". Too soon?

Hi @EL11
I think the heel height may work. I guess it will depend upon how long you're on your feet and whether the shoes are comfortable to begin with. I had an ocassion to wear heels recently and the discomfort of the shoes bothered me more than the height. They were new and I knew it was risky since they weren't broken in. Half way through the night, heels off, flats on. Be prepared in case that happens to you.

Here's a thread on Shoes For Recovery. I didn't read through it so not sure if it will benefit you in any way.

I hope you enjoy the event you're attending. It was nice to hear from you! :)

Thanks, @Layla! It is a two-hour event and I'll probably arrive late. I think I will audition the Eccos during the day. They used to be my go-to travel shoes, easy to slip on and off with a slight height. Or maybe I'll just go with sneakers.

Thank you for the link. The posts I read were mostly about athletic shoes, but did remind me that I was always keen to try Keens :)

@Layla @EL11 What about the stuff I read about not wearing older shoes...that they are broken in differently from the ways we used to walk?

I have been surviving now in boots/snow boots....for now. But yeah...what are your thoughts?

I got my first pair of those Eccos 10 years ago. For the last year pre-op they started becoming uncomfortable... Did not go to that event but I did try the shoes and they seemed okay. Soon, boots!

Hi @lovesstars
Nice to see you on the forum! How are you doing? I hope well.

Personally, I wasn't about to replace every pair of shoes I owned. And I didn't.
I only discarded the ones that I often wore as my hip deteriorated, my gait changed and I developed a limp.
I'd get rid of any that you wore frequently, due to the wear pattern. I've read over and again it can cause different aches and pains and I didn't care to risk it.

Please don't be a stranger here.
I hope you have a nice weekend! You too @EL11

Going in for second hip replacement this Tuesday. I went back to work after #1 after 6 weeks, and for shoes wore Clark’s. Low, low heel/wedge, and for the most part they worked well. I can’t get my right leg into snow boots now, that’s the “bad” one now because I can’t push my foot in with enough force. Luckily I won’t be outside now for at least 6 weeks (more or less).

That’s good info, thanks. and all best wishes on hip #2 ... nice chunk of time in between for you! Just right I’d say. Lately, the hip that was done first has been more likely than the second/left one to give me twinges, but I don’t even think twice about the half-mike walk to our closest supermarket now.

My OS said, “the capsule is stable at three months.”
