Smarter??? HAHAHAHA - no. I just hit the wall a little earlier than you and am climbing out little by little. This is just a super humbling experience.

@Josephine . . . I'm learning how to do things on this forum so I apologize for my mis-steps! I did respond with the answers to your questions but I didn't know to put the @Josephine in!!! Sorry!

You missed out some information
3. acetaminophen and oxycontin but I have not taken the oxyoontin except on my surgery day and even then I didn't really need it but nurse suggested I stay ahead of the pain so I did.
I did ask "how much are you taking (in mg please) and how often?"

4. I had quit icing maybe day 5 post-op but I did start back icing today based on advice I got here today.
And here "If so how often and for how long?"

Sorry @Josephine!! My mistake!!

Taking 1,000 mg of acetaminophen at a time. Usually every 6-8 hours. 3 times per 24 hours.

Today for the first time since surgery day I took oxycontin!! Had three hours before I could repeat the acetaminophen and pain was a 7-8 . . . so I took 10 mg.

I'm icing three times a day now. 3-4 hours per session.

Happy Tuesday to you.
I hope you're doing okay.
Wishing you a better week than the last.
Two weeks tomorrow already. You're on your way. :happydance:

Sadly, sometimes overdoing it is the only way to find out you weren't ready and to discover some strategies to test out readiness before heading in full-throttle. My surgery (left hip) was on July 30, so I'm a bit ahead of you time-wise, although I don't walk as far as you do yet. One thing I discovered is that you sometimes discover you can do something by accidentally doing it. Like steps. I just stepped down "normally" a few days ago when going outside onto the porch. Now, my leg isn't quite up to the full staircase yet, but that is how I found out it is moving in that direction. lol I make a point to go up or down a single step in the normal, adult, non-toddler-style way a couple of times per day, since doing that didn't bring on any pain or tightness. I think a little bit of soreness is normal, simply because strengthening muscles does that. But that's just it: soreness, not pain and not tight. That's my opinion anyway.

About the cane. I still limp some because my muscles are still tight and weak in the upper thigh/gluteal areas. So I don't use it around the house, but I do whenever I go out anywhere or will be walking any sort of distance. I also like to use it first thing in the morning while my hip/muscles wake up and get moving. The reason I don't use it as much is because I walk a little differently with devices and I am trying to get my hip and muscles to where they work well without them. My limp isn't bad at all, really. So that is my own personal compromise. And as I said before, I realized I could do it when I would just get up and walk a little way before realizing I had forgotten to grab the cane. Making a point to walk heel to toe helps a lot too.

Have a great day and healthy recovery!

Sounds like you are doing great @SueK!! Thanks for the comments!! Oddly . . . I have zero pain climbing or descending steps! I have significantly more pain just walking with my single crutch!! Was like this the day after surgery and still continues!!! Crazy I know.

I have worked hard at trying NOT to limp as I walk . . . think I've done well there. But my pain comes from weighting my surgery hip. It's a sharp pain . . . not a burning pain from muscles (at least that is how it feels to me!!). I surely don't know!!

But today is significantly better that yesterday so I'm smiling!!

Again, thanks for the positive comments! We're going to get through all this before you know it!!!:wowspring:

A tip -
Try heel-toe walking when / if you're limping. Let your heel hit the ground first followed by toes.
It takes a concentrated effort but I believe you'll notice a difference.
Give it a try if you find yourself limping at times.
Enjoy the day :)

@Layla They instructed me to do that at the hospital and I've been doing that. The walking pain I feel sharp stabbing pain in the hip probably 3" below the bottom of my incision and to the outside of the hip. The pain is deep and sharp. But not terrible. And definitely not muscles, etc. I can still walk without any real limp!!

Okay
Good!
4. I had quit icing maybe day 5 post-op but I did start back icing today based on advice I got here today.
Okay
5. Some swelling but not terrible.
Okay
I'm icing three times a day now. 3-4 hours per session.
You accomplish little or nothing if you're only doing it for 20 minutes. Ice for at least 40-60mins and more than 4 times a day.
6. I "WAS" walking ½ mile 2-3 times per day. I cook all my meals and do all my shopping. No cleaning except dishes.
Hmmm okay

Exercises done at home.
I was also doing the exercises I was told to do twice per day usually 20 reps.
I added a "easy" resistance band to ones like seated leg lifts.

Quad sets x20
Gluteal Squeeze x20
Abduction x20
Ankle Pumps x30-40
Heel Slides x20
Short Arc Quad x20
Hip Side Kick x20
Trunk Stability Bridging x10
Hip Backwards Kick x20
Long Arc Quad x10 with yellow resistance band
Internal/External Rotation x20
Standing Bilateral Heel Rise x20
Once I used a programmable recumbent bike next to lowest resistance for 10 minutes
Walk 2-3 times a day home with single crutch
Obviously you missed the bit in with the recovery articles that says this

BIG TIP: Hips actually don't need any exercise to get better. They do a pretty good job of it all on their own if given half a chance. Trouble is, people don't give them a chance and end up with all sorts of aches and pains and sore spots. All they need is the best therapy which is walking and even then not to excess.

The walking pain I feel sharp stabbing pain in the hip probably 3" below the bottom of my incision and to the outside of the hip.

Perhaps you'd show me where this pain is using this chart

@Josephine

Guess I've ben following my surgeon's instructions regarding the exercises. I've kept doing the exercised he gave me at upon leaving the hospital. These hardly even feel like "exercises." None the least bit painful or difficult I do feel like I'm benefitting from the heel slides and some of the others that are really only slightly stretching. But if these are hurting me I guess I should stop. I have no trouble at all lifting my straight leg into and out of bed . . . no pain.

My pain seems to be coming on the line between T & V and the depth is between R1F and R2F. This pain has diminished greatly today!! Still there just significantly less!

No OxyContin OR acetaminophen today!!!! Got to admit I am blown away by the improvement from yesterday afternoon to today!! I feel like I could walk around the house without my crutch but I'm afraid that might be too much too quick!

Thank you so very much for your thoughts and comments. I plan to show this site to my doctor. Everything I'm reading here JUST MAKES TOTAL SENSE to me and is specific rather than generalized instructions.

Just a quick update. Yesterday was a VERY good day and today is almost as good. Hoping I've turned the corner from my overuse. Still amazes me that one week ago I was feeling virtually normal!! Not there yet but getting there.

Yahoo! Good for you :yahoo:
I'm happy to hear you're feeling better.
Hope the rest of your day is great. :) :-) (:

Sounds like that bursitis is calming down - great news! Just keep to the slow and steady approach. It's tried and tested and does work.

Just sitting here "waiting for the pot to boil" . . . at least that's what it feels like. I'm just ridiculously impatient!

Guess it doesn't help that I live alone and just have my three dogs to keep me company!! :heehee: My wife lives about a hour away and comes by often. (We separated 18 years ago but we have been "back together" for probably 8 years! Guess we both got use to living alone and to be honest there is just so much of me she can take!!! But we talk 5+ times a day and spend every weekend together!)

My wife has terrible arthritis in her hands plus a poorly healed thumb break. She is having three surgeries starting with the thumb fixed September 17 (11 days) so I'll have to be her primary caregiver for a few days AND I need to be driving! Plus, my paralyzed dog is coming back next week. So I need to be ready to handle their care!

Honestly, I'm not in that much pain but I feel like I still need my crutch. I can walk without it but I feel more pain every step so I'm guessing I should hold off on moving to a cane, Some ways my hip moves really causes a short, sharp pain that tells me all is not ready for much progress yet. I need to be patient! But I need to get better in 11 days!

10 minutes have passed since I started typing this and STILL no improvement . . . Hahahaha!
