TKR TKR - November 8th

That is amazing progress.
I was told not to run or jump with my PKR but if you are cleared for running that is very good news.

Happy Three Month Anniversary!
You're doing great...let the good times roll!
Have a great February!
@Mr. Bill

Entering four months on March 8th. I overcame a major milestone and swelling is gone and no signs of arthritic pain. Still doing P/T twice a week and I am usually sore the next day but its muscle soreness of quads and calves. I started jogging on the treadmill at P/T with no issues. Still on Meloxicam but nothing else.

I call my TKR a total success. I haven't felt pain free in 15 years. I attribute my success to a great doctor and an attentive therapist who encourages me to be successful. Therapy is so important.

That's the goal! Glad you're doing so well and feeling positive about your progress.
A great week to you. Thanks for the update, Mr Bill!

That's great news on running. I'm interesting in a few things around how you got ready to run on the treadmill, what P/T exercises got you ready? How did you know you were ready to run, did your P/T evaluate you for that first? Do you experience any swelling post running on the knee? I'm at 5.5 months and am expecting to run at the 9 month mark per my P/T (~July). We started doing plyometric exercises this week. I had a rocky first ~2 months so I think my progress was delayed.

Just did my last physical therapy class, just short of 6 months. Ran pain free for 3 miles and jogged another 2. I also dropped 20 lbs to get some pressure of my knees. Hamstring gets sore still but was told that will go away. Doing a half marathon in October so training to get to a comfortable pace.

My advice to anyone who gets a TKR. We are all different. We all have different types of symptoms. We all heal differently. You need to put in the effort with physical therapy to get your motion back. It is painful. It is frustrating. It does take time but I can guarantee if you have good Doctor and you do the therapy you will feel much better about 4 months in.

I’m glad that you are doing so well at 6 months post op!

Since we are all different, and heal differently, I will never do painful PT to get my motion back because I don’t think it’s necessary. Time and gentle movements worked well for me.

Enjoy those runs!

Congrats on the weight loss. You're doing great! Thanks for the inspirational update.
I am really glad PT worked so well for you, it clearly made a big difference. We all choose our own path though and not everyone responds the same way to traditional PT. It is important we all find what works best for our bodies, especially after a major surgery like TKR.

Wishing you all the best as you train for the half marathon, what an awesome goal!
Take good care, Mr. Bill! :)

One Year Anniversary is next week!

As I stated previously I was training for a half marathon and completed it last week. I did a 10K (6.2 Miles) on Saturday and beat my time from last year with a bad knee by over 24 minutes.

On Sunday the next day I ran a Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) for a total of 19.3 Miles finishing mid field.

Overall I had zero pain or issues with the replaced knee and only wore a compression sleeve which I honestly didn't need.

The best advice I can give anyone is a year makes a difference with TKR. I thought I would never heal 100% but stick with the P/T, medication and icing and you will be satisfied overall.

What a wonderful post, @Mr. Bill …. It’s so good to read how well you’re doing. Your success will help so many people who are early in recovery or just contemplating surgery. People need to hear there are many good days after joint replacement! Thank you for taking time to provide an update.

Great advice and likely more improvement to come over the next year...as many report.
It is wonderful to read of the great progress you made and your update will be inspiring to those following behind. Thanks for sharing and Happy One Year Anniversary!
