Well, here I am just past the one year mark. Looking back on my thread, it has been a long haul. I am so glad I had this done. Just a little over a year ago I was struggling to get through a grocery shopping trip (and sometimes quitting midway because I just couldn't stand the pain anymore. I was having a hard time sleeping at night because of pain. Work was a nightmare.
Here I am a year later. I can shop all day if I want to I can bike and hike. I feel like I have 4 or 5 more hours in my day because I don't have to come home from work and spend the rest of the evening on the couch recovering.
Things are not perfect. I suspect because of the other knee which will need to be done eventually. I can do stairs all I want and go up and down stairs several times a day but I'm leading with my operated knee and my old knee is still lagging a bit behind. It's not super painful yet but I notice the lack of strength and stiffness. I have occasional back pain and occasional hip pain on the non operated side. Again, I suspect it is related to the non operated knee.
Heres the bad thing - I lost 40 pounds to get this surgery done, and I've put most of it back on. Unlike many of you I did not lose my appetite post surgery. For a long time after surgery, just getting through the day was challenge enough. I didn't care enough to diet too. Now I'm back working on eating better. Ive lost 10 pounds so far but am going to have to lose the rest before I can get the other knee done. I am frustrated that I put myself in this position AGAIN. I'm worried a little that I'm damaging the new implant with excess weight and I've got 25 pounds to lose before I can get the other knee done. Not smart.
However, if i did it once, i can do it again, I suppose. Of couse I can. I can even exercise this time. Okay, so I've got a few months to lose this weight if i want surgery this year. No more excuses. Ive already told the boys we are back to no junk food in the house rule. Go out and get anything they want, go to Dairy Queen, stop at the Minit Mart for a candy bar or soda, but do not bring it home. Or a least hide it somewhere I can't find it. I know that the only way it works for me is to cut real and artificial sugar to cut my appetite. Then limit bread and pasta and mostly concentrate on fruits, vegetables and lean meats. Sweets are occasional treats maybe once or twice a month. I have little self control so the only things in the house have to be healthy. I will binge on brownies if they are here, not so much on plums.
