TKR Stabbing pain?!

Hi PeggyB! I’m 6 weeks out also (well 6.5 weeks) and still dealing with a lot of swelling and achy feeling. I also was not prepared for the recovery & all the feeling it brings. I think the best we can do is listen to our knees and try to stay positive

@pacosmom

You are so right about “listen to the knee” and “stay positive.”
Listening to the knee - I know mine tells me I’ve tried to do too much and when I do the appropriate amount of activity—and the right kind—it stays quiet.

Staying positive gets easier in some ways. I am thankful for this forum as I know others all around the world are on this same journey and we can support each other.:tennis2:

This forum is amazing. So much advice, so many people going through what you are and so much support.

The one thing to focus on is that every single person here may have had a similar journey but not all go at the same speed. Your body will decide what is good for you and when. Dont rush, don't overdo it and as they say everything comes to he who waits.

You will get there :)

I am so grateful I came upon this forum! Everyone has been so kind and helpful. It’s nice to have folks who understand! : )

Hi all,

So just about ten weeks post-op and was doing pretty well. That is, until yesterday. I was at work, walking to the cafeteria, when I got a sharp stabbing pain around the outside of my knee. It came out of the blue, took my breath away and it was a while before it simmered down. I went to PT last night and got through it ok - the therapist mentioned my kneecap was stiff - but other than that, it went fine.

While getting ready for bed last night, the pain came back and again, eventually settled down. I was good this morning and then, you guessed it... the pain is horrible!!

Any ideas as to what this could be??

Thanks!
Peg

Hello again @PeggyB
You'll notice that I have merged your newest thread with your original recovery thread.
Please don't start new recovery threads.

For several reasons, we prefer that you only have one recovery thread:
  • That way, we have all your information in one place. This makes it easier to go back and review your history before providing advice.
  • If you keep starting new threads, you miss the posts and advice others have left for you in the old threads, and some information may be unnecessarily repeated
  • Having only one thread will act as a diary of your progress that you can look back on.
So please post any updates, questions or concerns about your recovery here.
Don't worry that we won't see your question because, between us, the staff read all new posts every day.
If you need an urgent response to a question, just tag a member of staff.
How to tag another member; how to answer when someone tags you

If you prefer a different thread title, just post what you want and we'll get it changed for you.

Here are the instructions on finding your thread, How can I find my threads and posts? . Many members bookmark their thread, so they can find it when they log on.

Now, about that stabbing pain: It sounds as if it could have been what we call a zinger - that's our unscientific name for a sudden sharp pain caused by your nerves as they heal. The pains are little electric shocks sent out by the nerve ends. They can be quite gentle or, as in your case, quitte strong.

You have gone back to work a bit earlier than we recommend so it may be that your knee is telling you it is feeling a bit stressed by the added activity.

Do you do anything at work that might have upset your knee?

When you come home from work, try to do the bare minimum. Grab an easy meal, and give your knee some TLC, with rest, ice and elevation.
