My bf had to work today so it’s really my first day all on my own since surgery. I decided to slowly do a few little things to help around the house. So I folded the laundry that’s been sitting on our guest bed for a week, emptied the dishwasher he ran last night and threw a load of laundry in the washer. Leg is a little tired but I can ice for a while before the load is dry then I’ll pack it all into my little bag and fold it as well. I figure it’s a nice little gift for him to do a few of the little things I know I can do but he won’t let me. Keeping it light as to not over do it :loll:

Merry Christmas everyone. It’s 5am here, I’ve been awake since 3. I moved to the recliner as to let my bf get some sleep and not be bothered by my thrashing about. I seem to manage about 4-5 hours of sleep before my hip starts to ache and I have to get up. I can’t wait to sleep through the night again.

Today is going to be rough. I’ve been in tears several times already today. I miss my mom, I miss my big boy dog we had to put down earlier this year, I miss my life and the ability to do things on my own without thinking about it. I don’t think I’d of made it this far without everyone in here, so, thank you to you all, especially the moderators. I hope everyone have a happy stress free holiday:plugging-in-xmas-tree-smiley-emoticon:

:merry-xmas-smiley-emoticon: @sondrals let yourself cry...it's cathartic to grieve what you miss!

Sending positive healing thoughts your way...

I'm on Bone Smart with a houseful of adult children, waiting on one last person before we open gifts... then we travel to another daughters for more gift opening and dinner. I'll be honest though, it has been a bit hectic this Christmas season and painful gearing up to having them all here. I love them, but look for some peace and quiet too....hence my escape to Bone Smart :loveshwr:

Have a peaceful day!

May the memories of those you lost be a blessing, and may the hope for better days with your new knees be a comfort.

@sondrals - You're going to get through this. You've already done so well, with two major surgeries in a short space of time. It's natural that you're sad at this time of the year, but things are going to get better.

Hang in there! You're getting better all the time.

It sounds as if you need a big hug -

Congratulations on your new matched set of bionic upgrades! I'm sorry this one is a little rougher going than the last one. They can tell you and tell you that every knee is different, but when you get there and each knee is really different it still feels weird. I know exactly where you are coming from with your frustration about being endlessly and invalid. All I can say is, find something to distract yourself with. It will be worth it, but probably not for a while yet. With serial replacements you're already coming in mentally and physically exhausted, its tough. But what was the other choice? Right? Now it's all done. Nothing can prevent it from happening and all you have to do is heal. By summer your first knee will barely remember it's an upgrade and the new baby should be ready for some fun and adventures.

Be kind to yourself. You'll get through this.

@luvcats thank you for your encouraging post. I was excited to read your experience at Disney, I’m so happy it went well for you!

Today has been rough, we’ve gotten almost 10 inches of snow in the last two days. I had physical therapy today and my ROM went down which was really disappointing. My physical therapist is wonderful and reminded me my other knee’s recovery was remarkable, this one is being more normal. We did e-stim on my quads as they are just kinda blah.

I have to go into the office tomorrow to do money stuffs so my friend is taking me and picking me up.

I miss driving so much, when is it normal to be able to drive again? I’m assuming I’ll have to be off the walker to do that and be able to bend my leg more.

I’m really struggling with sleep and being able to get comfortable. My ice machine likes to error out about every half hour because I move and it gets a kink in the hose. I’ve had what equates to a tantrum the few nights because I wake up at 2-3 and between my hip and knee I can’t get comfortable again. I can’t decide if I need to wear my brace at night or not. Decided to not last night and my dog decided to walk across the bed and stepped on my leg.

Is it fairly normal for my whole leg to just be sore? Almost like muscle sore but clear up into my thigh down to my ankle.

I just wish this were all over and done with and I was normal again. Maybe a little cabin fever and boredom is setting in too.

You have to be off of all opioids. Also, be able to do a panic stop. My OS released me at 6 weeks, but I waited until 7 weeks, when I was more secure. I suggest to take someone with you and test out your ability to respond in an empty parking lot. You don't want to be out on the highway, need to slam on the brakes, but are hesitant because your knee isn't ready yet.

Yes, it's normal. This surgery affects your whole body. You walk differently, sleep differently and even sit differently. You are using muscles that aren't used to be used in that way. That leads to soreness.

I’m off opioids, I’m just taking Celebrex and Tylenol now.

yeah probably not ready for this yet. Big sigh.

Ugh. It would be so nice to hop into the future for a few hours break from this slow recovery.

I had to laugh when you said you got ten inches of snow and still went to PT. If we get a tenth of an inch of snow, everything shuts down!

Keep an image of yourself farther along the recovery path in your mind’s eye. it doesn’t always help, but sometimes . . .

ROM will fluctuate very easily this early in recovery, depending on our activities. And it’s way too early to worry about it. :console2:

It's usually about 4 weeks post-op before people can start driving again.

So a few more weeks at least for driving.

Went to work for about 4 hours. Leg swelled up so I’m home now and icing and elevating. But at least I got the few things done I needed to

I'm amazed you went to work 17 days Post op!!! I thought I was early doing half time at 6 weeks....and I really felt that I was pushing it! I'm doing better at 15.5 weeks, but driving still irritates where my tibialis anterior muscle connects ....I'm taking a break this coming weekend, but I haven't had as much of a break from driving as I had hoped!!

I understand you're not doing the driving, but up and down from my office chair bugs me too!! I hope this was just an end of month type of thing and you get a work break again!

The snow missed us! This has been one of the least snowy Christmas's in the last 4 years!!

@Macknit it was just a end of the month report that needed done. To be honest it was brutal, even for just 4 hours. Last time I went back at 3 weeks but I’m not sure that’s going to happen this time. I do have limited time off so I’m going to have to go back before I’m ready.

To top it off, after 10 inches of snow, I got up and it was -6 this morning. I feel kinda poopy and I think it’s the weather and cold, I just kinda ache all over, freeze to death when I’m icing despite a heated blanket. Maybe a little dehydrated as well due to the cold temps.

Brrrr we've had the cold temps here too! My kids have been wearing their hooded sweatshirts in the house with extra blankets when sitting and my house averages 69-70 degrees!

Hot herbal or green tea helps warm you up too!!

It's not even 3 weeks since you had your second major operation in a short space of time. Allow yourself to feel as bad as you do, because it's normal to feel that way. You simply can't just bounce back from a knee replacement. Pamper yourself and stop expecting to do better and recover faster.
And as a topper to an already kinda bad day I’m now sitting at the emergency vet with our dog because she somehow broke her dewclaw and is bleeding all over.
I know she's your dog, but couldn't someone else have taken her? This is too much activity for you, so early in recovery.
The dog's bleeding dew claw will be quickly sorted out. A firm dressing around her paw would probably have stopped the bleeding while you wait for the vet to see to her.
