THR Some worries and questions... day 6

So I have made a little more progress.... my pain medication has been changed to Norco (by my request... was looking for something not so "toxic") it works... not as well as the other, but the pain is manageable. I started using a cane with my therapist... I am very unsteady with it, so she just wants me to practice in the kitchen going around the island so I have something to grab onto if I need it. The pain is still "abnormal" in my opinion when I am walking. I do have an appointment with my surgeon on Tuesday and I am going to request another x-ray while I am standing up this time to see if something went wrong.

My concern today (I know I have many... ha ha) is the skin on my inner/upper thigh.... nearly to my privates, is super super tender to the touch... like it has been seriously bruised... yet there is no bruise. I have been on blood thinning medication since the surgery, and I am not running a fever so I don't think it is a clot or infection... any idea's??? Has this happened to anyone else before? I find it really strange. Also my whole leg is still extremely swollen... and I am nearly 4 weeks into this now.

Kelly, I'm tagging Jo so she can comment on your situation. How long has the tenderness being going on? @Josephine:

You know there is a direct connection between the contradictions in this comment and the following comments ..

First this ...
I am getting up and walking every hour, but the most I am going to 100 yards or so.... the pain is still pretty intense and I just can't seem to put my full weight on the leg.
Then this ...
The pain is still "abnormal" in my opinion when I am walking.
and this ....

My dear, there is absolutely nothing wrong with your hip other than that you are only 4 weeks post-op. The pain you have in your groin is simply post-op pain and is badly under medicated.

I also think you're doing too much and it would be a good idea if you restricted your activity to just your necessary visits to the bathroom or to the kitchen for drinks and snacks. You're not doing housework or cooking meals or anything like that, are you?

How much Norco are you taking and how often? What strength is it? Are you icing your sore areas?

gee, I am sorry to be a bother.... I WON'T take more pain medication than I am... I don't like the way it makes me feel....

I have never been through this before, and I can't help but be concerned.... I am not doing anything more than my therapist wants me to do....

I came here for help, not to be quoted all my contradictions. I won't post anymore... thank you for your help and suggestions...

Hi Kelly,
Don't go away, you are not a bother -- we want you to feel better.
I see that Jo is the "mother hen" in her tag line and sometimes that means helping us to see our contradictions, assessing our situation and providing suggestions that will help to improve our condition.

Take care,
Cardie

Kelly, please do not go away. You asked for answers and Jo answered them honestly. I didn't post after your saying that you switched to Norco because it is so evident to me that you are under medicated. I know you don't want to hear that, but what Jo is saying is the truth. Believe me, she is not scolding you! You would know it if Mother Hen was scolding you :hysterical::hysterical::hysterical:!

You can keep searching for answers or go else where, I hope not, because that is the truth and the honest answer. You need stronger medication, every 4 hours and you need to be resting, elevating and icing! That is the ONLY way you are going to get thru this recovery.

I am sorry if you think it/we are harsh, sometimes the truth hurts. But this is the truth! There are some that breeze thru this recovery, more power to them, but they are not the norm.

It will take a good few months before you are totally pain free so if you choose to suffer thru those months, that is your choice. If you want to hear how to get thru it with less pain, and recover easier, Jo (and I :wink1:) are telling you how to do it.

Please, do not take offense at anything that has been said, or how it has been said. Everyone on Bone Smart only wants the best for you and that is our honest advice. Good luck with what ever you do Kelly, but I hope you choose to stick around. Hang in there.

You expressed concern - I was simply addressing your concerns. It's entirely up to you if you don't want to take more pain meds but don't then worry that there is something wrong with your hip because there isn't. It is, as I said, post-operative pain. Nothing more, nothing less.

Hello, I do know I said I was not going to post anymore... because personally I had my feelings hurt and felt come comments were insensitive... but I did want to post that I had an appointment with my surgeon today....

We did several x-rays including one where I was standing and bearing weight on my operated leg. Even though the x-rays are not showing any problem, he can FEEL the popping when he was moving my leg around, and does not think it is just tissue and muscles. He is sending me to a specialist for more diagnosis.....

Oh... and he feels the amount of pain medication I am taking is fine....

So long story short.... I think people know their own bodies enough to know when something just isn't right..... and when someone is scared or nervous sometimes compassion goes further than.... "take a pill."

With that I truly won't post more.... I wish everyone who has helped me on my journey well and wish them all a speedy recovery in their own healing process....

Hugs,
Kelly

Kelly.....I do hope you return to tell us the outcome of your meeting with the specialist. It is important for our members to hear more about what is going on with your hip as you progress through your recovery. Each person has a unique story to tell and yours is important to all of us.

Kelly, please do update when you find out what is going on. We do care and were trying to be reassuring. You were right to go to your OS. Obviously we are not doctors! But, we were trying to be put your fears to rest, so our intentions were good .

I know in the past I worried about every little thing I felt, as I didn't have a good experience. USUALLY it is just post op pain, but on occasion something is wrong. I am still not right 18 months later...

I wish you all the best and hope your problem gets resolved. Please let us know how you make out. Take care Kelly.

I'm so sorry your feelings were hurt, hope your feeling better soon.

Hi Kelly, please let us know how you get on, dont burn your bridges hun. The people on here are some of the best!

Sometimes when things are written, they can be mininterpreted because you cant hear the inflection in ones voice or the warmth in someones eyes.

I know how much encouragement I have received here and still do. Recovery is such a long and difficult process and we are all here for you.

I dont mean to be patronising in any way, but also remember that a natural process of going through such an insult to the body is a certain amount of "blues" I for one cried every single day for weeks and I am normally such a positive person.

Dont leave us!

Tanny x

Alrighty... I am posting again today because I really need some advise from folks who may have gone through this.....

I just got back from the specialist today.... I am being told I need to have a revision on my new hip.... apparently the cup is in the wrong position which is what is causing my pain and the popping.... I am officially scared out of my mind.... I was preparing for the second hip replacement... not to start all over again!!!!

My surgeon just called me and told me the cup is in the same place that is was after surgery... so it is his fault and not something I did... which was nice of him to admit at least....

I do have another appointment again with yet another surgeon on Monday for another opinion again.... my OS told me there is a high possibility of the hip failing if not fixed... and of course the longer I wait the harder it will be to reposition the cup.... OMG.... I just don't know what to do.... I don't know if I should have it repaired by the same surgeon... I worry that my body will not be able to handle 2 more surgeries.... I am really very distraught

Hi gorgeous Kelly

I know how scared you are right now and incredibly distraught. ((( hugs )))

It was nice of your OS to admit his mistake.. did the OS say this is an emergency?

You have an incredibly difficult decision and the problem is only you are going to be able to make that decision. But I know someone from the form who has the experienced this or something similar will jump right in and be there for you - you already know that I am available.. :)

Remember also honey that our bodies are wonderful at healing and you will get through this and have a better life.

Stay strong beautiful girl xxx

thank you soooooooo much my dear Sandy... you have been a rock and I appreciate your kindness more than I can ever tell you .....
Big big hugs my friend

ohhhh... and it is sorta an emergency... the longer I wait the harder it will be to reposition the cup.... I need to make a decision ASAP... at this point I don't know if I should even wait for the next opinion... I am still on blood thinners... which obviously will have to stop before surgery... which pushes me out yet another week.... I just don't know what to do.

Life long friends are forged starting on the forum, we have certainly become that Kelly ((( hugs )))

Hopefully, someone will come on line soon who can provide some experienced advice.

Angels winging their way to you honey xx

Do you have faith in the OS who did the procedure?

Kelly, I'm sorry to hear that your surgeon is saying the cup is misplaced, but it really was good of him to admit now that this is the problem. Smja's question is a good one.....how much faith do you have in this surgeon?

Normally we tell folks to find a new surgeon when a problem like this is identified and that is probably what I would do. For one thing, you really must have this surgery done by a revision specialist.....a doctor who is used to dealing with problems and fixing them. If that doesn't describe your current surgeon, then no matter how much you trust him, you need to look around for someone experienced in the revision process.

I know you are discouraged that you must have this hip replaced again before you can move forward to the other hip. But....a revision in many ways is usually less of a problem in recovery than the initial surgery. You are going to be fine. Many of our BoneSmarties have had revisions and gone on to have the active lives they wanted.

When the surgeon is telling you that you need to have something done right away, I doubt that it is to the point where he means RIGHT NOW. You have time to search out the right doctor....and it's important to do so.

I'm going to tag Josephine and Jaycey so they can respond to you quickly. They are much more experienced with hips than I am. @Josephine: @Jaycey:
