I think it's just general practice to get OK from person's primary care doctor and sometimes specialists as well if there are any health concerns.

YES! My GP's office had a cancellation so I go in to see them tomorrow morning at 0845 hrs. I'll send the medical clearance ASAP afterwards, then call my OS. I expect to confirm my surgery date tomorrow afternoon

I like having a plan, this up-in-the-air-but-know-what's-coming kills me!! Once I have a date, that's something concrete I can make plans around AND wrap my brain around to deal with.

Hi, czak57! Thank you, I'll be cheering for you, too!! I find out my official date tomorrow, the docs office was too busy to finalize it on Friday. I've gotten all pre-surgery clearances, though, so just waiting on "the call". I was pretty let down not getting it Friday, seems like it's really been a very long weekend.

I love the Melbourne area, Brevard County is beautiful

OMG! Docs office called, said they could do surgery next Tuesday or January 6. After talking with hubby and pregnant daughter, I confirmed January 6, 2014. My daughters having our first grandchild, due December 7. I erred on the side of conservative, opting for surgery well after so I can definitely help her but not feel pressured during recovery. Soooo, I get two new knees as a late Christmas gift to myself!!

Two new knees will be one of the best gifts you'll ever give yourself. I do love mine! I am going to put you on the January surgery list.

That sounds like a great plan - welcome the new baby and have your holidays and that will keep you from dwelling or worrying too much about upcoming surgery. Fantastic news!

Yeah! Congrats on your surgical date and grandchild--I am having a first grandchild too--in March--its a boy! I do not get surgical clearance until December 10th. That's wonderful that you are all done with everything! Now you just have the wait--but it will fly by with that new baby and the holidays! I am so happy for you!

i was like you for years had mine done 17 days ago now thinking about getting back on my mountain bike and walking the dogs and getting back to my courier business

czak57, my daughter and her hubby are having a daughter, Eleanor Rose I'm so excited I can hardly stand it, they live about 7 hrs north of me so pretty convenient for a long weekend trip. I was just there Oct 20 for her baby shower, it was wonderful.

earlybirds, even though I haven't had the surgery yet, I'm already kicking myself for delaying it for so long. Rather than doing all the stupid injections, I should've just gotten the surgery - course, hindsight is 20/20. I can hardly wait to be on the recovery side, planning everything that I want to do.

hi you are not intending having both knees done at once are you , even though i knew a lady that was over weight had both done together and was fine , as far as putting off opps i am the biggest wuss i was in more pain 7 years ago then just before my opp the pain started to ease so put it off, so i got to 64 before i had tkr its day 18 now and its going fine ,mal

There are quite a number of recovery threads on here about folks who have had both knees done at the same time and done well, so don't let anyone scare you about that, Bluetechseeker.

Thanks, VancouverUSAgal. I'm more afraid of NOT having both done at the same time!! Having injections for a number of years and having at least a little relief, I was lulled into a false sense of security. Now, the injections just don't work, so I'm feeling all the stiffness, pain, and limitations come back with a vengeance it seems <sigh>. I'm counting the days till I'm on the other side, just trying to really prep myself and hubby in the meantime. I know this is the right decision, and so am accepting it wholeheartedly. Two months from today, I'll be the ever-grateful recipient of two shiny new knees

Tykey, if I tell myself this is a big surgery, then I'll also keep myself in the frame of mind NOT overdoing it after surgery. I know me, and I know I'll jump into rehab probably too eagerly. I'll definitely have to concentrate on "no pain MORE gain"!! I've also been educating Mr. Sandy so he's prepared as well.

Both valid concerns - you don't want to scare yourself unnecessarily but you also want to remember to take it slow and easy afterwards! It sounds like you've got it figured out.

Well, Thursday is the day I'm informing my HR of the planned surgery. I'm also picking up my ice unit, walker, and 3-1 commode. I've ordered the splitter, and will get a 2nd knee cuff so I can ice both at the same time.

I just have this fear when I tell them about the surgery and time off that they'll terminate me

I think you mentioned that you have taken extra long term disability coverage. Rest assured that your employer CANNOT fire you. It's illegal, discriminatory, and totally unethical!

I just had a conversation with my boss a few days ago to inform her that I have scheduled my second TKR for December 18th (my first one was on February 6, 2013). I admit that I was apprehensive to go in and tell her I'd be taking another extended leave. But the way I see it, I'm the one in pain and I need to take control of my life. And the improvement in my quality of life after getting my first knee done has convinced me to do the second knee. I was too much of a wuss to do both at the same time, but I've gotten over that! She took it better than I had expected her to, so now I'm preparing for a minimal 12-week absence. I only took 9 weeks the last time and that didn't work out so well.

By the way, I actually got tears in my eyes when I read about you trying to climb the stairs - I could SO relate to that! Hang in there; the time will fly by and before you know it you'll be doing things you only imagined doing before the surgery.

Thanks Elaine! I'm what you'd call a worry wart, and just dread having the talk with them! My hubby booked a belated honeymoon trip to Costa Rica for us, we will be gone the week of Thanksgiving! I decided to wait till the middle of December to inform the higher-ups. I will be back from the trip then let them know. I haven't gotten my date to see anesthesiologist yet, but there's still lots of time?

Stopped Friday and picked up Kodak cooling unit w extra pad, 3-1 commode, and walker. Told hubby this gives me lots of time to bedazzle walker before surgery, boy did he chuckle!! He's planning a welcome party for a couple months afterwards, "officially" welcoming my new knees, dork. He's already planning a BBQ, inviting friends, planning quite a shin dig, I just kick back and relax.

I don't know if it's my imagination, but my knees have been killing me! Tons of pain and swelling constantly. I forgot how bad they actually were since the shots were working for a while. Now it's allllll coming back with a vengeance. If I countdown on the calendar once, it's easily half a dozen times a day now. I'm really looking forward to getting my new hardware and moving forward
