Glad to hear you are doing well. Eating out is such a normal thing to do and we get to forget about the surgery for a short time. My only eating out so far has been a street sausage when we were out running errands yesterday. It was delicious! I am having issues with pain meds. Tried coming off them without tapering and felt awful. I won't do that again! Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Its when we forget to take sticks etc that we realise we are doing well. The food sounded mmmmmmmmm, my tum tum is rumbling at the thought

Thanks for stopping by, @Legin. Good suggestion about the ice pack, @Dearjr. They are becoming my favorite fashion accessory! Or, as the old ad campaign went, "Don't leave home without one." @Widget1, thank you for your encouraging words. Looks like you got all the good manners and friendliness when they were dividing up characteristics and personality traits in your generation. I don't know what your siblings were thinking when they said you should pick up and go to the Mayo Clinic and impose on your 94 year-old-Mom during your recovery. Sheesh!

Hope you're getting the pain med withdrawal and constipation issues managed, @cairistiona60. I went grocery shopping yesterday and thought of you every time I bought something which is a good source of fiber. Fiber can be yummy, you know. I bought blueberries, raspberries, pluots (a cross between apricots and plums), apples, and a pear. I still have some bran cereal (45% of your daily dose of iron, 20% of your daily fiber requirement). Topping the cereal with some of this fiber-rich fresh fruit, sprinkling in a few walnuts, and adding milk (or soy milk or rice milk). Yum! Fiber! I know you said you have multi-grain cherri-0s for breakfast. Maybe you could get some raisin bran to add in with them, and top with fresh fruit of your choice. ... I picked up some multi-grain bread. (I always read the nutritional information labels to check for protein, fiber, and nutrient counts. Some bakeries will market multi-grain or whole wheat bread, but in reality mostly contain refined, white flour.) ... I also bought some small fingerling potatoes, which I plan to cook and eat, skins (fiber! nutrients!) and all. If you're a meat-'n-potatoes type of gal, try the small, thin-skinned ones, skins and all. The red skinned ones are a bit more nutritious than white or yellow ones. ... In all honesty, some dark chocolate covered fruit and whipped cream also made it into my shopping cart. ... And some jelly beans. So I'm definitely not a paragon of virtue. Now that I'm feeling better and have an appetite, I am definitely craving some sweets.

I also picked up some arnica cream. Some Zantac. Some Alleve. Definitely still in recovery mode.

I was out and about yesterday from about 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Someone picked me up and took me to church. Someone else picked me up from church and we went to a health food store to pick up a few things and have lunch from their prepared food selection. Sushi-- Yum! Then we went to a music event hosted by a friend of mine and stopped by Costco on the way home to pick up the Zantac, Alleve, and some other items.

A long, long, long day. I came home and collapsed. My knee was a little swollen, slightly arthritic feeling, and the "wonderful" ITB band was reminding me of its existence. I took 500 mg of aceto -- however it spells itself -- and iced.

Been having a lazy morning, but it's about time to roust myself and get going with the laundry. The excitement never ends.

I know abt laundry esp when girls come home from uni, like its a bonus for me

Hi SarahJane,
I'm a week behind you for RTKR and have been watching your progress! You are getting out much more than I am and I am envious! But, we live in the mtns of NC where there is NOTHING! Lol! Next weekend we go to ATL for 5 yr old granddaughter's birthday and Costco! Yeahhhh! Thanks for nudging me on to get out and about!

SarahJane,

Wow - you had a really busy and long day... and all those activities didn't completely wipe you out like they might have a few weeks ago.

My go-to breakfast is Kashi organic wheat biscuits with some blueberries (I wash and freeze the berries I buy so they won't all spoil before I can enjoy them), and then instead of milk I stir in a container of yogurt (to get the probiotics). I'm also always checking the ingredients on bread, even the freshly-baked bread from the bakery. Yum-yum to red potatoes (with skins) and sweet potatoes (baked). My "guiltless" treat is frozen grapes - I wash the fresh grapes and freeze them. When I want to cool down, I just pop a couple in my mouth and the cold goodness coupled with the pop of sweetness can't be beat on a hot summer day.

I love the multiple uses for arnica, and am never without it. In the past people would ask me what is that (arnica), and since it was used in our house since childhood I though everyone would avail themselves of its great properties.

Now that you've had a trial run of being out and about and surviving, I'm sure you'll do so well when you go to the Hollywood Bowl for the concert!

I'm tired just reading your post! Great that you got out and about. So far I've only ventured out to OS appointments and physio.

Hubby got some salads at the grocery store on Saturday so I've been eating some veggies. My friends are always going on about the lack of veggies in my diet. I'm having veggies tonight though. There will be tomato sauce and mushrooms on my pepperoni pizza! That counts, doesn't it?

@SarahJane sounds like you had a bit of normalcy. Good to hear that you followed up with a morning of rest. After a busy day, a day of rest is always good for the knee.

Well, I seem to be paying for yesterday's adventures. Or maybe for the 10 minutes on the exercise bike this afternoon. My knee is grumpy. And complaining. And tight. And disinclined to let me sleep, despite a fair amount of icing and acetaminophen in addition to my two daily doses of Alleve. Am thinking of taking half a Percocet.

After having a lazy morning, I sorted laundry, over a couple of hours (great TV show on, distraction city). I then loaded a little old lady shopping cart with the laundry, and took it to the laundry room. I put the loads in, and then went to use an exercise bike for 10 minutes. When I went back to the laundry room, there were about 8 minutes remaining on the machines. So I went home and relaxed and iced and elevated for about 45 minutes. I went back to the laundry room, and unloaded the side-loading washing machines. Bending over to get the small items from the bottom of the machine hurt my knee a little -- probably ligaments or tendons. I sorted the laundry, and loaded it back into the cart, which I took home. I rested, iced, and elevated for about an hour. Then I hung the laundry on the line and racks. And rested for an hour. I looked at recipes to cook something with the mushrooms I'd bought the other day, but they all seemed like too much work. I continued to rest. I finally roused myself long enough to cut up a small handful of vegetables and some tofu, and made a simple stir fry with along with a small serving of pre-cooked yakisoba noodles. More resting, some icing. Checking out bonesmart. Replying to some posts and commenting on others.

Patience, patience, patience, patience, patience. But I gotta say that a small part of me is livid that I'm still in the dog days of recovery. ... Thanks for listening to my little grumble.

I am thinking of postponing the doctor's appointment I have on Thursday. I don't think I can do the doctor and the concert without too much energy drain, especially since I have appointments on Wednesday, too.

Do y'all think I should be taking a bit more Percocet? I'm not in pain, per se, just discomfort. My physical therapist is on vacation this week; my next appointment with him is on the 17th.

Hi, @Thesoutherncook. Thanks for stopping by and saying such kind things. I took a look at your thread. When I'm feeling better I'd love to visit the mountains of North Carolina. City living can be overrated at times, and I've always wanted to see the Carolinas. Do you live anywhere near Ashville? The Blue Ridge Parkway? Other parts of the Appalachias? When I'm able to walk on hills and trails again, I'd love to see your part of the country.

@Widget1, I hope you're able to participate in some of the festivals and pre-holiday shows. I love craft fairs. Would love to know more about what you do, if you care to share it. (We're cautioned against doing anything hiere which will reveal our true identities -- at least insofar as setting up screennames, etc.)

OK I admitted it I'm really Brad Pitt, well cept the solar panel head and expanding tum, and a face that works well on the radio. You are in the doledrum state lass you want to do things but your stamina let's you down, it will get better

I laughed when I read this. I am so bored with what I feel like cooking. Have been perusing the Allrecipes website and did make some teriyaki chicken last night. Wore me out and I didn't even like it all that much. My family did, though.

Good job on your laundry. I meant to get mine caught up over the weekend but only got halfway done. I just now threw some wet clothes into the dryer that I washed yesterday morning! And only because I need something to wear to work today. Sigh. It will get better.

I have an appointment with my family practice doctor this afternoon and am going to talk to him about sleep. If he has any miracle cures I will pass them on.

@SarahJane i hope we find the secret of sleep
I started to put on Saran wrap
It makes the knee less sensitive but still wake up every 1-2 hours to change position.

Chortle, now to me being in the kitchen is therapy.

I don't think that upping the Percocet will do you any harm and if it decreases your discomfort then, yay drugs! I take two at night and they calm my knee down but not my brain so I still can't sleep. I was supposed to go to physio today but I cancelled. Feeling a bit blah! My mother in law wants to take me out to a fabric store tomorrow but I think I'm becoming housebound. I don't want to go out anywhere.

I have a grabber that I use to get the laundry out of the machine. It's one of those long reacher devices with a claw on the end. It's great for reaching into the dark recesses of the washer. See photo attached.

Sarah Jane,
We would love to have you visit the mtns of NC! We are 2 hrs west of Ashville, 2 hrs east of Chattanooga, TN and 2 hrs north of ATL! There are plenty of hiking trails and waterfalls, etc surrounding us. We live in a very small town in NC, home of the John Campbell Folkschool and the infamous New Year's Eve ' Possum Drop at Clays Corner. Now, have I convinced you that we live in the middle of nowhere? LOL! I paint watercolors to keep busy. I even went downstairs to my studio this am and began a painting!! Yeahhhh!

I'm off to PT with a very stiff knee today. Will be so glad to get past the swelling.
Hope you do something fun today!
Helen

@SarahJane

Taking your time to do the laundry and mixing those HH chores in with diversions sounds like a winner plan to me! Rest up today for your amazing concert trip tomorrow!

Sent you a PM

@SarahJane my knee always scolds me for a day or two after a busy day. We just haven't worked out yet what we can and cannot do. I think we can do this much. Knee disagrees. Every time so far. I'm hoping that one day soon we'll reach an agreement. You eat amazing sounding food, I'm coming to visit!! I empathise totally about being livid about still being in the dark days of recovery. This is long journey but cannot be rushed and we will get there when our knees are ready to forgive us for the brutality inflicted upon them during surgery!

Thanks, everyone, for your wonderful posts.

I spent a couple of hours late this afternoon looking at the library and some threads IT (illiotibial) band pain. I'm not a happy camper ...

even my fingers are misbehaving, as this was supposed to be the beginning of a much longer post, but something I hit ended up posting it.

more in next post ... stay tuned.
