TKR Sandi's knees, take 2

More independence does feel great, @sistersinhim . I am trying hard not to join the ODIC today because I feel restless and want to accomplish something. I have done a few minor chores - finally put away the bag I took to the hospital, emptied my little chair side trash can, straightened up my "nest" a little bit. I still feel restless, but I am sitting and elevating. I feel okay, but am trying to be smart.

I found that I could do a little something then rest twice as long. Then, if I felt like it, do a little bit more. I also found that I couldn't do two days of extra activities in an row for quite a while, probably three or four months. The first time I did two days in a row, I was in pain for days. Definitely not worth it! You will learn your knee, and what it will and will not let you do. Just start new things very slowly!

It feels good to do little things. Family and friends did laundry, but I could fold while I was sitting and put away a load when I'd get up to use the restroom. My house is small so everything is just a few steps away.

Wow, I actually slept last night. Other than my 1am alarm for meds and the constant turning to adjust my leg, I slept from just after 10pm to 5:30 this morning. Every other night I have been awake from 1 - 3 hours in the middle of the night. It is nice to be awake and not constantly dozing off :)

A good night's sleep is such a blessing. I'm so glad you feel rested today! That's another step in the right direction.

Sandi, that is great! I am 3 wks and still waking every 1-2 hrs. A good night sleep is a beautiful thing!

I am so impatient! Got up this morning grumpy because I am tired of having to move so often during the night trying to get comfortable. I just want my old sleep back :/ I am really also frustrated at how much I can't do and feeling restless. I know this is so unreasonable - I know my job right now is to help my knee heal - but my head doesn't want to accept that sometimes. I know that I am doing incredibly well at this point and I need to hold onto that. I'm so glad to have this community to vent to, thanks for being here.

It's rough! Being a big reader I had my kindle full of books to read during my recovery, boy was I surprised to realize I couldn't concentrate enough to read! That made things difficult. At three weeks I was ready for visits from friends or family, so that helped pass the time. Hold on girls, at a month-6 weeks you'll feel a bit better and able to leave the house for short trips.

I'm with KarriB. My Kindle was full of new books, but every time I tried to read, I'd fall asleep or ended up reading the same paragraph over and over again! I watched mindless TV. Oh, and stayed on BoneSmart! Anything to past the time! I tried coloring, but it was impossible to do while your leg is elevated. Time and patience are necessary for this recovery.

I had all these things to do (sitting down obviously) but really all I do is watch mindless tv (Netflix), sleep, toilet, walk, eat and repeat.... no energy to do anything else or see anyone.
Time and patience need to be my mantra

That's it for the first month, you're doing a great job at it! After my infection surgery makes best friend and I would go out to eat after my biweekly dr appts. I did sit in a booth with my leg on the booth beside me to keep it from swelling, but it felt good to be normal again. That'll be you in a few weeks.

Sounds like what I have been experiencing. I have slept in my bed and although I wake several times a night, always able to get back to sleep. Hang in there and know we don't mind listening as we most likely feel the same way!

I, too, filled up my kindle and I think I have read a total of maybe 2 chapters. I LOVE to read and thought I would pass the time with my books. oh well...

That brain fog is something else, isn't it?! I felt so stupid. But, I knew what the cause was, so I just went with it and napped and did mindless things. Suggestion...don't try and balance your checkbook while you're still in the fog. I make a mess of mine! Took me months to straighten it out!

I am finally sleeping better (hope this doesn't jinx me!). I have always been a side sleeper and it has been challenging to find a position that was comfortable for more than a few minutes. 2 nights ago i lay on my side and kind of "scissored" my legs, bottom bent and top one further over and bent so they are both on the bed and not each other. I can't believe how much more comfortable I am and it works on both sides, which is handy since I have always changed sides several times a night.

I got a good lesson in how good a pain killer ice is last night. I woke at 1am to take my Tylenol/Tramadol combo, went right back to sleep and then woke at 1:30 with my knee hurting quite a bit. I'm pretty sure I just did too much yesterday. Anyway, I thought about taking an extra oxy, which I am weaning off of but instead got up and got ice packs, went in the livingroom on the recliner and elevated and iced. I fell asleep in about 15-20 minutes and slept till 4, when I got up and went back to bed with my knee feeling fine. I need to remember as I cut back on the meds to depend on my ice packs more. I've really been thinking of the ice for swelling instead of pain, but that has changed.

That's because swelling is painful. As the swelling diminishes so will that pain. So yes, use ice as much as you need.
