THR Rhiannon89's recovery thread

I imagine it is so frustrating to have one hip raring to go, and the other stopping you in your tracks. Do you have a sense of how far off your next surgery is? I think it's hard for those of us in the US to relate to the protocols you follow in the UK to schedule surgery. Every medical system has its challenges. If your bad hip is like mine was, while activity aggravates it, sitting isn't that comfortable either, so it's nearly impossible to ever feel that great! Hope things fall into place for you soon!

Hi Everyone

Nearly a year out now for old Righty, it's doing such a good job.

Shame that I can't be here all happy about getting the left one done. I went to my GP, I got them to chase the hospital, I finally got an appointment to see my surgeon, I requested the day off work with 6 weeks notice and my work have said no. I'm beyond angry and upset, I've tried to stress to them how important it is that I go to this appointment, I've been waiting nearly a year just to go and see him, all I want is to get put on the waiting list which I know he will do when he sees me. It's just physically impossible to get any cover that day apparently, god knows what would happen if I had to call in sick, maybe the whole dental practice would burn to the ground?

Really struggling now as I'm just angry and upset, I tried everything to get this appointment, I've now got to try and rearrange it and going by how this has gone so far I'm not getting my hopes up.

That seems senseless and heartless of your employer in my opinion. I’m sorry you’re struggling with pain and trying to address it to no avail. It feels terribly unfair.
I’d re-schedule the appt with the surgeon and call in sick that day.

On a lighter note...I’m happy to hear Righty is doing so well. May it only get better.
Happy One Year Anniversary....a few days early. Please keep us posted.
@Rhiannon89

Thanks @Layla The Right hip is still the best thing I have ever done, you would never know I had been through it to see me now, just that left one holding me back from being complete.

Fingers crossed I can get my appointment changed and it's not too long of a wait.

I agree with Layla: that work position is senseless. I’ve learned that sometimes you have to just call in sick even though you feel bad about it. This concerns your health and ability to work so what is the problem with them? You even gave them a heads up. I so feel for you. You did everything the right way and they punish you for it. That’s really too bad. Rescheduling and not telling them seems the safe bet but fingers crossed it’s not too far in future. Hoping for the best for you.

Sorry to moan some more but I've now been handed a letter for a probationary review meeting at that work that looks like they will be getting rid of me due to my inability to be 'flexible' and cover other people when they aren't in. I work 2 jobs to cover my bills, I have contracted hours, I can't not work at my other job to cover this one!

So anyway should they hand me my notice on Monday then I have cancelled my appointment for no reason and that makes me even angrier. My boss is a nasty piece of work but she owns the surgery so there is nothing I can do.

One day things will start to go right, one day!

Oh, @Rhiannon89
I am sorry about this...especially that you cancelled your appointment.:unsure:
Please do see if you can get back on for an appointment...even a cancellation.
My daughter works two jobs also and is now interviewing for one job for a bit more money so she can hopefully go to one job. It has been hard for her to juggle two.
I'm sure that you will actually be glad (at some point) to be shed of this job...or at least this employer.
Big hugsxxxx

So sorry to hear of your difficult employer, while your other hip needs an appointment.

I work 2 jobs to cover my bills, I have contracted hours, I can't not work at my other job to cover this one!

My daughter was working three jobs at one point, then two, then finally one very good job. I understand the difficult juggle. I hope you are able to find a more flexible employer, if this job should come to an end.

Hello @Rhiannon89
I’m sorry that you have to deal with this discouraging job situation in addition to the pain and discomfort your left hip is causing you. Your employer sounds like one you’d be better off parting ways with, if you’re able to find a job first, to replace this one. It would be difficult to work for someone so heartless and unaccommodating.

Wishing you the best in scheduling your next appointment and moving toward losing the pain. Please stay in touch...we’re here for you.

Hello strangers! It's been a while but I wanted to pop on here to celebrate that I have now been put on the waiting list for my left hip, I will be a double hippy finally!

Been a long wait to finally see my surgeon, i cant express how happy I was to see him this morning. I knew I would finally get what I wanted. Had a few xrays but everything is the same, he knew I needed the left one done to get me out of this pain finally so he put me on the waiting list while i was there.

I'm so excited and really hope operations aren't cancelled again, he was pretty positive they wouldnt be but couldn't give a time frame unfortunately. Knowing I'm on the list is enough for me right now

I hope everyone is doing well!

Good news, Rhiannon! I hope the wait isn’t too long and I wish you comfort as you wait.
Stay in touch and let us know your surgery date once you’re on the schedule. We‘ll be here ready to cheer you on.
Enjoy the end of the week!
@Rhiannon89

I'm baaaaack and I have a surgery date!!!!!

I got the call on Friday, apparently I'm on my surgeons high priority list, I go in on the 4th May!!! I was in Subway at the time of the call, jumping up and down whilst my boyfriend had no idea what was going on haha

To say I'm happy is an understatement, to think that in a months time I will be a double hippy is just amazing.

My surgeons new hospital has just opened a new elective orthopaedic centre so my recovery and after care should be similar to the last hip.

WOO!

Congrats on your surgery date! I can’t imagine your relief and certainly understand your excitement even if the rest of the world might think you’re crazy. Lol. The long wait is finally over. So happy for you.

Hello old friend! :wave: It’s nice to hear from you and see you have a date scheduled as it’s obviously making you happy. You don’t have too long to wait until you gain double hippy status. I hope you remain reasonably comfortable as you wait for your surgery date. We’ll be here to offer support and cheer as needed.
Have a great week!
@Rhiannon89

:hi: Great to see you are set to get number two all done and so happy to see you back on the forum.
Not much longer now.:happydance:

Thanks guys, this forum was invaluable to me last time so I'll definitely be hanging around. Especially now we cant have visitors in hospital, got to keep sane! I'm so glad I know what to expect this time round, makes it a lot less scary :)

I'm glad you are feeling less anxious this time and you know we will be following your journey.
It's a good time to start getting your life back.
Healing mojo coming your way.

I'm done! Officially a double hippy!

I stayed partially awake, heard lots of hammering but was quite content and spoke to the anaethetist. Was wide awake by the time they were dressing it and by the time I was in recovery the nurses were all asking if I was sure I had anything done! i was so relaxed and happy and chatting away.

I'm up on my ward now with 3 other lovely ladies, I've stood up with a walker and used the commode (massive thing as last time my bladder didnt wake up!) I'm now relaxing waiting for my dinner.

Pain is manageable at the moment just a dull ache but I'm ready to ask for more drugs as and when I need them!

Double hippy happy :happydance::happydance:
Hope your pain is well managed and I'm going to stick the recovery guidelines here for your review.
Healing Hugs xxxxx
Hip Recovery: The Guidelines
1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now, they are almost certainly temporary
2. Control discomfort
rest
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)

3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.

4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these

5. At week 4 and after you should follow this

6. Access to these pages on the website

BIG TIP: Hips actually don't need any exercise to get better. They do a pretty good job of it all on their own if given half a chance. Trouble is, people don't give them a chance and end up with all sorts of aches and pains and sore spots. All they need is the best therapy which is walking and even then not to excess.

We try to keep the forum a positive and safe place for our members to talk about their questions or concerns and to report successes with their joint replacement surgery.

While members may create as many threads as they like in a majority of BoneSmart's forums, we ask that each member have only one recovery thread. This policy makes it easier to go back and review history before providing advice.
