TKR Post op 12 weeks TKR

Hi poppypony, the online course is called Suceed course by Samantha Smith DPT, you can find her on instagram with links to course. It’s maybe helping a little. I too am exhausted, even though I sleep fairly well. I have always been a side sleeper but can’t get comfortable that at now. I finally can sleep on my back. I put a pillow lengthwise under each leg, pillow at the very end of bed to keep covers off my toes, pillows under arms sometimes. I am still using my ice machine at night on knee. The outer edge of my foot on surgery side is either numb or pins and needles, my lower back and buttock on same side are sore. I just want my life back! Ok enough whining. Where are you in UK? I spent a summer in Durham as a teenager, would like to go back. My son lives in Malaga, would like to go UK with him. I hope this helps, we just have to be patient.

Thanks. West Sussex.

Yes I feel the same, wish I had not had the surgery. Easy to say now and the only reason I stukc with appointments was because I felt my right knee would need replacing sooner than later and needed a "new " knee to rely on :) Hopefully it will all come right ????Good luck

Is your lower back or buttock muscle on the opposite side, causing you issues? I seem to have sciatica. My right foot goes numb. Oh crikey, sorry i sound like i an whinging.
I have sciatica so I sympathise. For me it was definitely worse than my knee pain.
I found gabapentin from my GP helpful. Also a thick sciatica cushion- especially when working online.
Once I could get down on the floor again- then back exercises definitely helped.
But it was a tough few months.
If you are interested in online classes- have a look at my pilates teacher's free classes on YouTube. Google Katja pilates and they come up. There are a huge range from knee/ glute strengthening ones to stretching classes and back exercises.

That is exactly what I have, so painful, hampers walking and laying in bed on my back.

Not whinging, just sharing and its helpful to hear, thanks

Bless you, thanks for the tips. My right foot seems to be numb a lot and this sciatica pain is just awful, hampering my walking and trying to bend operated knee on step.
Question please to
Kind people talking to me. I slept down stairs for the first 8 weeks as our stairs had a narrow bend to manoeuvre. I had a rail put up and was able to go upstairs at that point, so delayed on stairs. Am walking up good leg up then bad legs follows and am only now trying to walk upstairs normally ( saying that i only tried one step twice)
Are there any tips to doing it properly? Is it just BE BRAVE and try. I seem to be nervous and a bit of a coward . Sorry

Thank you thats very helpful, i like your drawing.

Thank you Layla for the posts you have put on here and did miss seeing them, just read them
Now. Very helpful and hopeful feeling. Its so good to know it is not useless and i must stop worrying about my bend. Someone i cant find now has mentioned an on line course with Samantha Smith with is $149
I am worried about paying for a course which is not cheap and is this a genuine course ? Thank you x

I think it's unnecessary to pay for a course online when all you need to do is your normal daily activities to recover from this surgery. Doing too much will more than likely slow your recovery down. Normal movements are much more beneficial.

Honestly- I think it is really just a matter of time. I had some ligament issues that gave me pain on stairs for a few months.
I wouldn't try and force anything. Just gradually increase your walking and start doing some strength work at about 5-6 months ( very light weights/ bands only). Then stairs should just come normally. Listen to your body.

@poppypony Hi, I had RTKR 9th December 2024 and yes it's quite traumatic. I get tingly toes and heel pain which I rub with ice and seems to help. I have back problems so no surprise my left lower side back and glutes are quite painful. Called my osteo and agreed if I can stomach ice then that's good. But use heat also. Just don't need extra problems do we. I also have swelling and stiffness but doing what I can daily. Great we can all catch up and even better the support here. Wish you well x

Hi, is it normal, (knowing there is no normal, or only normal for you) my knee seems to be getting worse, 14 weeks now, more like a board everyday
Bend seems to be disappearing. When i try and bend its like a brick wall, that i cannot even force any further than the wall.

@poppypony oh feel for you. I have that now but 5 weeks tomorrow, strange it's come back. Do you still do seated heel slides? Very gently might help. As you say, what is normal, is there a normal. This really is a journey. Wish you well x

What is normal, at about your stage, is to overdo things in a wish to "get back to normal". This can set us back.
It is also difficult, unless you recorded carefully in the early stages- to monitor progress. It is easy to forget how bad things were in the early weeks and feel that you are "stuck".
Gentle heel slides, rest, elevation and ice interspersed with gradually increasing walking will probably help. I also found getting out with other people for short trips/ coffee helped me to stay more positive whilst nature took its course.

Thanks. Yes i do those exercises three times a day, static pedalling, under the desk type, plus squats, toe lifts, leg lifts from floor and up in front, lifting leg off the bed, on the stairs bending, walking.

Yes i do agree, as i am so much better than i was initially as i could not lift my leg off the floor. Has no quads working. I was very behind everyone else it seemed and have never achieved better than 90 degrees, mostly less. I am getting very fed up as want to be doing more and being further along, even bought an automatic car to be able to drive a car
