THR Phoenixx29 has a new hip!

Another sleepless night, but at least I'm catching up on some reading. Sleep seems to come in the early hours, so I just have a bit of a lie in.

I had a bit of an ouch moment when I twisted my right hip a little too far; that just served as a reminder to take it slow.

The pain is well controlled, and I briefly considered to cut down a bit on the meds, but on second thoughts, it's probably a bit too soon. Only day 6 - but it feels like it has been longer. It's easy to lose track.

A lazy couple of days coming up...

To everyone on Bonesmart - have a very Merry and pain free Christmas !

Way too early my friend. When you start forgetting doses that's the sign you are beginning to wean off your meds. Until then take them as prescribed, around the clock. Staying ahead of the pain helps you to regain your mobility.

Hi @Phoenixx29
Stopping by to say Hi!
I hope your recovery is progressing well.
Wondering if your sleep has improved.....hopefully. If not, cozy afternoon naps are an option
Sending warm wishes for a peaceful holiday weekend and a happy healthy 2018!

First days can be rough...hope all is easing.
Happy New Year...Happy New Hip!
:yes!:

I hope you’re sleeping better. I really struggled for the first few weeks. Could not get used to sleeping on my back!! Doing much better now, especially as I can now lay on my operated side. Wishing you a happy and healthy 2018

So I am nearly at the 3 week mark. Doesn't time fly! I had been feeling a bit despondent about my progress, but I think I am actually doing quite well.

My main problem is that the rash, which suddenly developed in November has just started to come back. I had already a scheduled appointment with my rheumatologist yesterday; so now I am being referred to a dermatologist to try and get to the bottom of this. In the mean time I am not allowed my RA meds and I have to make do with naproxen. hence my feeling of lack of progress. I am feeling very stiff and stairs are getting harder. My knees are hurting because of swelling, which is still affecting my sleep.

on the upside, my new hip is giving me very little trouble. I can even sleep on my right side, which helps a little. i think if it wasn't for my RA I could probably ditch the crutches, at least indoors.

I'm seeing the dermatologist on Wednesday, so hopefully I will be allowed to start my injections again, and things should improve. Once the injections start working I can step up my exercises a little to build up my strength a bit. My follow up physio is on the 18th, I will need to check if they would be happy for me to start on my static bike. I have not been able to get on it for over a year, so I am a bit cautious.

@Phoenixx29,

I am a week ahead of you on the recovery, closing on 4 weeks post-op. I have the same question on the stationary bike. I have an expensive gym membership that I have not been using, and there is an exercise room at work that has a brand new commercial grade recumbent bicycle. I may call the OS office tomorrow to see if I can start gentle pedaling this week.

I am so sorry about the RA meds. I had to go a week without my Mobic before the surgery and I thought that I was going to die. Just getting up from a chair was a major ordeal. My problem is fibromyalgia. Within 2 days, every tissue in my body, neck to toes, was screaming. It took a couple of days after surgery for the meds to start working again, so it may take a bit for your RA meds to build up to an adequate concentration in your system.

Time does fly in recovery. At least more so than I imagined.
I'm sorry you're suffering and struggling without your RA meds.
Hopefully the derm provides answers on Wed allowing you to resume the meds
that keep you comfortable. If it's not one thing, it's another, or so it seems...
Best wishes for answers, pain relief and continued recovery.
@phoenix 29

Sounds like you are doing well...hip wise. Good for you. Hope the other issues ease soon.
Healing hugs:friends:

Feeling marginally less stiff today, and can get around with just one crutch indoors.

only 2 more days and I should be able to start my injections again.

@Dive17 I have been off my RA meds for 2 months now as I developed a vasculitic rash. I was put om a course of steroids which helped with the inflammation, but the effect has been wearing off. As the rash has come back, I might need to go back on steroids, in which case I should feel better soon. Fibromyalgia must be difficult to deal with.

I almost forget i have a new hip, but had a reminder this morning when i turned a bit too quickly in bed, which pulled on the incision. That was a bit of an ouch moment, and a reminder that it's early days still....

Well @Phoenixx29, it’s great the hip is doing so well. Sorry you have the other issues to deal with.

@Phoenixx29 It is great that the hip is healing. I hope that you can go back to your RA meds soon. I take Mobic to manage my Fibro, and Nexium so that the Mobic does not destroy my stomach. I have tried to get off both but then I am miserable and in pain all the time. We must do what we must do, life is full of tradeoffs. Best luck on the hip recovery, please keep in touch.

Glad you’re home and doing well :hi:

The appointment with the dermatologist was interesting. Apparently the vasculitic rash might not be that at all. She mentioned what she thought it might be, but I was too tired to remember the name. Next step is a skin biopsy to verify her diagnosis, which will probably be done next week.
The good news is that she agreed with my rheumatologist that the condition is not caused by my meds, so I can start my injections today. I hope they will start working soon so I can come off the naproxen and reduce the cocodamol a little. once the RA flare up is under control I can hopefully start working on some strength exercises.

Still not sleeping - I just can't settle into a comfortable position. I'm sure this will sort itself out in time.

Hope getting back on meds helps. Can’t imagine ra pain with everything else. It will be interesting to find out what that rash is.

Hi there @Phoenixx29
I hope things start falling into place for you with your meds and RA.
I'll bet once all is order you'll be able to concentrate more on recovery.
Best wishes for a great rest of the week!

Finding a way to sleep comfortably eluded me for months...hope not so long for you.
I would nap often to try to make up for it.
No choices!
All temporary thankfully.
Hope today is a Good Day.

@Mojo333 I was a bit naughty last night. At 4:30 in the morning I still could not get to sleep - but I was incredibly tired. It was the compression stockings which were bothering me; in the end I managed to persuade my husband to get them off me. It will now be my fault if I get DVT apparently.
Result: 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep. Bliss! Stockings are back on now .....

Oh the dreaded TEDs! Many surgeons aren't requiring these now. I only ever wore mine for 2 weeks post op. Far too hard to get on and off. If you are moving around regularly during the day you should be fine. But of course the decision to ditch them is yours alone.
