Hi Sasvermont, sounds like you are doing fantastic preps! As for showering - they got me in the shower in hospital on day 3, but no showers for me at home for 6 weeks because its over the bath, not walk in. I guess it could depend on how they stitch you up and generally how you are doing, but it did feel good!

No showers for 6 weeks? What does one do to stay clean?

:shk::shk::shk::shk::shk: 6 weeks??????????? How is that even possible! Put a plastic bag over your leg and bathe! You need to feel BETTER!!! You don't live in a third world country, you know!! LOL!!:pnc::rant::pnc:

No showers?! AAHHH!!! I have a step in tub as well but I just kick my foot behind me so I'm not breaking the 90 degree rule and maneuver myself in. The first time I showered when I got home was the first time I felt like a human again!
The robe and pj's is a great idea...I brought a set to the hospital with me and once I could get out of bed and get to the bathroom I was allowed to put them on. I felt much better in my own clothes and out of that "breezy" hospital gown! I can wear yoga pants now but only because my staples are out...I sported some very sexy over sized sweatpants for awhile!
And don't forget to stock up on the frozen peas! They were my saving grace!

Best of luck to all the Octobers!! We're all cheering for you!

did you have anything to hold onto when you got into the shower?

What about a shower bench, did you use one of those or did you find you could stand ok in the shower?

This shower situation is the only thing I'm really worried about. I wish I was still in my house that had the separate tub and shower.

Hi everyone!

I had another chat with my surgeon today and i decided to hold off on my surgery until the pain gets worse; and since i have incredible tolerance for pain, I hope that wont be for another 10 + years. I was having a very hard time being OK with the surgery and couldn't justify it. My doctor said that if i am happy with my quality of life and that pain isn't bad than maybe i should wait until I feel more "in need" of the surgery. He jokes that when the pain gets bad I'll come to him asking for it lol.

I am still going to hang out here :) and one day i will have to have my THR, just not yet :)

Heather...I had a handle put into my shower thats removable. My mom would hold one hand (eventually I could just put that hand on my cane) and the other would hold the handle (and eventually just against the shower wall). I stayed at my parents' house the first week I was home and my mom stayed right in the bathroom while I showered until I was comfortable and steady enough to be on my own.

Bernie...They say the best surgeons for a THR are the ones who don't push it on you. They understand that its a personal choice and while they can give guidance they leave the decision up to you. Only you will know when you're ready! So it sounds like you have a great doctor...and will be in great hands when you finally take the leap (or hobble)! Best of luck to you!

Greetings everyone...

As far as the shower goes...I went in on Thursday, came home on Saturday. Hubby washed my hair in the kitchen sink on Saturday night..(I loathe hair that is not washed every day.) On Sunday, he helped me into the shower and I sat on the corner seat and used the removable head. I must say it felt great to be clean but VERY traumatic!! I even claimed the shower was my PT that day. Think I skipped Monday and by Tuesday was so much better. I have a little 3 or 4" ledge to step over and it is tough. Can not imagine stepping over a bath. So now I am day ???? gotta think...22 (had to go count on the calendar). I am still sitting down but now get up to adjust water etc. Just dont feel confident about standing the whole time.
Does that help anyone? Also, I LIVE in my Miller Lite mens pj pants. The BEST thing in this world. Told my hubby that I promised that ONE DAY he would come home to a wife with makeup and real clothes...just not now!!
Hope that helps yall. Hang in there...life is BETTER on the other side...

I was thinking since I have a step in shower that I'd have hubby grab one of our white hard plastic lawn chairs and throw it in our shower for a few weeks. (I used a similar one after my c-section.)

For those that have been through this, if you know what I'm talking about, would something like that work?

13 hours till surgeon appointment.

I didn't have any problem while in the shower once the PT showed me how to get in and out...ours is in the bathtub, so that was quite a step up. I'd been doing sponge baths for a few days and washing my hair in the sink. The shower felt so much better. I didn't need to sit. I would have liked an electric shaver though. Never could get the hairs off my knee (a few weeks later after the staples and bandage and steri-strips came off) because it was numb and I was so afraid of slicing it.

Okay...Drum Roll Please...I have my date....Friday, October 16th. Total replacement. Spent quite a lot of time with the surgeon and asked a gazillion questions. Then, on the way home, I realized that between hubby and I, not one of us asked what the brand name was of the replacement. grrrrrr

Hahahah!! Don't get yourself nuts! It's not like you're going to see it or have to register it at the DMV!!!!:hehe::hehe:

Hey y'all...I wanted to mention something I did prior to the surgery and still now 3 weeks after. My mom found these CD's online...they're guided imagery and positive affirmations specifically for surgery. I was skeptical but all the online reviews were 5 star. Figured it couldn't hurt-I'm a big believer in positive energy- so I listened to it every night before going to bed. Its supposed to help with your anxiety, your recovery, and they even claim to give you a healthier and better surgery. I feel great and my surgery went better than anyone imagined. If you're into the alternative and holistic health stuff its worth a try.
I don't know if I'm allowed to post this on here Jo...if not I'm not offended if you remove it. I'm not affiliated with the product in any way just trying to pass on something to our upcoming hippies that may help.
The CD's are Health Journeys: A Meditation to Promote Successful Surgery by Belleruth Naparstek
I know that amazon has them...and there's reviews on there if you're interested.

Wow!! Shuga!!! That's some STRETCH on the barre! Are you on your cell, too?? OUCH!!! And is pic before or after????:hehe::hehe:

That's fine, Shuga. Anything that helps even one person is fine. I can soon suss out people who are spamming their commercial products!

Well I haven't seen any October hippies posting about their upcoming surgeries yet so I gues I will go...
Leave tomorrow afternoon for Seattle. Will get an x-ray done in the afternoon (I didn't go to the right place when I was down for pre-op so I have to do it tomorrow), night in a hotel and then up at the crack of dawn for my 7:40 surgery start. I am feeling nervous but trying to keep myself busy so I don't have to think about it too much. I keep feeling like I will forget something...accidently take some aspirins...won't get my wake up call at the hotel....
I am sure it will all be fine and in a few days I will be on the other side and the start of living my life again.
If you are a praying person please pray for me...
Best wishes to all,
Sheri

I'll be a day behind you as I'll have my right hip done on Wednesday. I won't find out the time till Tuesday, but I'm hoping for an early start too about 800 miles south of Seattle.
I've gotten pretty obsessive, but not too anxious yet; just hoping all goes well for all.
