I did not get the garden planted yesterday. Once I finished doing my flower pots I could feel that it was time to rest and ice! So yes, one must continue to listen to their body and when it says "I've done enough" you stop, sit back and relax! Today I will work on the garden, this will be a two day process( this used to get done all in one day)! Yes slow and steady!!
@forbesy I am glad your return to work is going well.
@Constanze it looks like your recovery is progressing nicely too.

Hi @NuMe2014
Your garden looks lovely! We remain at a similar stage of recovery. I forget about my hip but do have to be careful if I am doing something different or strenuous. I just love the feeling of "popping upstairs" or walking down the lane without thinking. I feel very lucky. When it comes to gardening I have to sit or bend quite thoughtfully but 95% of the time all okay. We are nearly there!

19 weeks Post-Op (left hip) 9 months Post-Op (right hip)

In my last update a month ago I wrote about all the yard work I was doing and how much I was enjoying it. Well.... my left hip told me " you are doing too much" ! I have a bit of a iliopsoas muscle tendinitis! This was confirmed by my surgeon at my follow up yesterday.

After I finished getting my garden planted last week my groin was really hurting and I could barely lift my leg up. Trying to lift my leg up into bed or into a vehicle was causing an excruciating pain. Weight bearing and walking was not affected. This came on gradual and I suspected that the problem was my ilopsoas, so I knew what I had to do.....rest, ice and I took ibuprofen. After the fourth day I started to see a small improvement, and each day it gets better but the pain is still there. So now I am just frustrated with this little set back!

I had a good follow- up with my surgeon yesterday. He said both hips look good on the X-Rays.
He also reminded me that even though they kind of say that at six months things should be getting back to normal, but in reality it's more like a year! I know this.... But because my right hip feels so " normal" I want push things even though my left hip is not ready just yet! I will see my surgeon again in October for follow-up.( he likes four month follow-ups for the first year and then 2 year follow ups after that).

About 3 weeks ago hubby and I went bike shopping. When I was picking one out I had a very difficult time trying to get on one and I twisted some muscles in my left leg ( I did not tell him how much it hurt till the next day)! I think this contributed to my problem that I have now too. Needless to say hubby parked my new bike and said "don't even think about it until July"! I am thankful for having a husband that cares.

So.... as each week goes by my muscles get stronger and my ROM gets better.

Brenda

Well done hubbers. You are.doing so well just his new found normality ran away with itself.

Hi @Legin, yes this new "normality" is at times hard to rein in!

This week we are having the roof on our house re shingled by 3 young 20 something young men. As I watch them easily scramble up the ladders and effortlessly walk on the roof I oh so envy their agility and ease of movement.

Its only a wee setback lass just rest and enjoy the view.

I love the smell of fresh cut grass.... especially when I cut it myself with the push mower! Two hours of nonstop mowing and I feel great....left hip feels a little stiff but that is all. I have not been able to do this for the last two summers! I used to be able to do it all in one hour and fifteen minutes, but I'm just so happy I can do it again! Yes I could have used the ride on mower but I have always liked to use the push mower. Left hip is now 5 months post op and right one is just over 9 months post op.

It's brilliant! When I do the equivalent it highlights to me how incapacitated I was before even though I tried to cover it up and deny it! Well done x

Nice one is it good enough to play tennis on.

Hi all, well last year at this time all I was doing was sitting in my recliner on a heating pad popping pain meds and waiting to have my first of two hip surgeries.
But this year I am......walking 2 miles a day, gardening, lawn mowing, a little bit of biking, swimming at the lake and hiking with a walking pole. Life has returned, medication free, and pain free!
Take Care and have a great summer:loveshwr:

Hello Brenda (@NuMe2014 ),
Just want to send you a quick Little "Hello". I'm currently on holiday in Cairns, Australia. Congratulations to your new pain-free life. Enjoy your summer gardening, swimming and biking.
Warm regards
Constanze

Glad you are keeping well and if I knew you loved the smell of fresh cut grass I could have got you a flight across to cut my grass at my new house lol. On a more serious note don't overdo the gardening and take care.

Wow, time flies when life starts to get back normal! I thought I would give a little update on my thread now that I am just past my one year anniversary of my first hip replacement. A little over a year ago I found this wonderful forum, while I was just a couple weeks into my recovery of my first hip replacement. In those first weeks of recovery I spent a lot of time here reading and re-reading and found so much helpful information. I honestly don't know how I would have made it through my recovery and prep for my second surgery if not for this site. This past year has definitely been a year to remember!

My right hip feels wonderful - totally normal. If I did not have the scar on my right hip to remind me of the hip surgery I would completely forget about it.

Now my left hip, well....it really is quite fine I just continue to have some iliopsoas muscle tendinitis that lets me know everyday that it is there, and ever since the left hip surgery my left knee has bothered me. I never had knee pain before the surgery, and this pain has continued to get a little worse. I saw my surgeon in follow up last week. He said the muscles around the knee are just loose, and has ordered physio therapy for that and some ultrasound physio for the iliopsoas muscle tendinitis. My surgeon also reassured me that it is still early days for the left hip ( he likes to look at a good year for recovery from hip replacement surgery). I tend to blame myself for these little problems and I know I really pushed my recovery on this hip this past spring! I probably should have taken things a little slower, but after being in pain and immobile for so long I got impatient and now am having to face the consequences! To some reading my thread it may look and sound like I took a real long time to ease back into really moving again, but because I was immobile for so long my muscles were real weak.

Over all.....life is good. My two new hips are letting me live a normal life again. I am pretty much doing everything in my life again that I was doing before my hips got real bad, except for biking. Me and the new bike just don't feel comfortable yet. I guess I will have a brand new bike to start using next spring! Hopefully then the muscles will be ready for it.
Take care all
Brenda

Chortle, chuffed for you lass. Couldn't have happened to a nicer person. That stamina will be back of that I have no doubt.

Harrah! A surgeon with reasonable goals for recovery! Yes, sometimes recovery is shorter - but it can take 12+ months depending on how long you limped around pre-op.
I guess I will have a brand new bike to start using next spring!
I think you're right. A bit more time and you'll be on that new bike.

Hello @NuMe2014 Brenda. I'm so pleased to hear from you. You've written an excellent 1-year report. I'm glad you are enjoying your new hips and maybe one day your left hip will feel as good as your right one. If you rest after a strenuous day, you'll recover. That's normal - even for people who never had surgery, and even for top athletes. How is your garden? It's become cool and wet in the part of Germany where I live and the time of the summer flowers is nearly over but a few, like dahlia and gladiola, are still blossoming. They have recovered from the heat-wave. Take care - Constanze

Great update....so glad all going well & you are enjoying life.
I, too, have had bad knee pain since my THR 2 years ago! I was told it was due to my awful gait pre op......I've tried physio, losing weight, walking, not walking, etc. I'm afraid nothing eases the pain & it's quite frustrating. I'd be interested in hearing if you get a solution.
Do hope you find that comfortable bike! Xxx

Hello @NuMe2014...I have read your entries with interest these past months and appreciate your update. I have been inspired by your terrific attitude even though your left hip gives you a bit of a challenge. It's great that your right hip is perfect. Reminds me a little of having different kids...no two are alike! Thanks again!

Hello @NuMe2014 thank you for sharing your post recovery update, great news about the right hip and I wish you success that the left hip will be there too. It is so wonderful to hear about people regaining their lives and being hip pain free. I look forward to hearing about the new bike come spring. :bicycle1:
