Well it's 4:30am and I have no muscle spasms but had a 5 1/2 hour sleep ( which is very good) just the pain got away on me I was not expecting to sleep that long. With my first surgery once I was home from the hospital I never slept longer than 2 - 3 hour at a time.

@NuMe2014, sometimes we just can't win for losing. This recovery is not going to be just like your first---as you are discovering. May be a good idea to set your alarm when you go to bed to be sure you take your next meds on time so you can stay ahead of the pain. Getting 5 1/2 hours of sleep is really heavenly so early in recovery, but being in pain is a real bummer. Hope the rest of your day is a good one.

Take care and keep us posted. We care.

Day 4 post - op
Yesterday It was a good day, I had aprox 8 1/2 hours sleep so woke up feeling rested. Only napped for a couple hours all total during the day. I kept my pain under control( I think I have figured out the right pill regime that works for me for now! ) I have stopped the naproxen as my stomach does not like it.
I am definitely beginning to understand the "no two hip recoveries are the same" phrase. This time around so far I am not feeling that energy drain since coming home. I am going to attribute this to the fact that I have been getting good restful sleeps at night and hubby is waiting on my every want and need!Oh and I cannot forget about my 2 faithful companions that never leave me whether I am resting in bed or in my chair downstairs.

Concentration is so much better. Last time I could not focus my brain long enough to read a book for at least 3 weeks, this time.....I have finished one book and am half way through another( I am not much of a TV or movie watcher).
Movement, like getting in and out of bed, sitting in a chair etc is easier this time around in that I am not so scared of dislocating or injuring my new hip( my husband even commented on this in that he noticed I was not holding myself so rigid with my movements). With my first hip I was so scarred of dislocation even though my surgeon told me that the type of hip I have is almost impossible to dislocate but I do have 12 weeks of restrictions!

Those heel slides are really hard to start with. I'm one week post op now and getting to grips with them but boy, I feel the burn! I had gabapentin for two doses( pre and post op) and its there to heighten the other pain meds apparently and its good for neuropathic pain.

Getting into a routine with the pain meds is def a good idea and sticking with it :happydance:

I forgot to add to my day 4 post - op. Another thing that is really helping my pain control this time is the ICE! I never knew about the ice last time because I did not find Bonesmart until a few weeks after my surgery and then I did not really try it! (Silly me) Even when I was in the hospital last time it was not offered or this time until I asked for it! I like my homemade ice packs the best. 1 part rubbing alcohol to 3 parts water, double bagged in ziplock bags and then wrapped in a pillowcase.

Day 5 & 6 Post - op
Yesterday I was on my own for the afternoon as hubby had to go grocery shopping ( we live in a very rural area, we have a small store to buy the basics like milk eggs etc, but to get our fresh fruit, veggies, and meat, well then we have a 100km/60mile drive). It was nice to be able to do some things for myself, but I did discover that ole energy drain!
I really slept last night. Took my heavy duty pain meds at 10:30, sleep by 11:00, woke up at 1:00am and grabbed some ice and then slept until .....9:30am! I think maybe it is time to cut back the dose of my bedtime meds...or not?
Now today I have totally amazed myself. I have only been doing my 3 physio exercises half heartedly because they hurt especially those heel slides which were almost impossible ( actually I have not even attempted them for the last 3 days!) Well today, the first 2 were almost impossible and then...bam I did 7 more just like that, a little muscle pain but not enough to stop me. In my books that's progress!!!

@NuMe2014 those heel slides were so hard for me too! My husband had to move my leg for I think at least 2 or 3 weeks. And my knee was so swollen it just wouldn't let my leg slide up. Then all of the sudden it got easier and seemed like each day was easier --then by myself which was shocking! I think you are doing great since that surgery was on the 19th. Lucky day since that was my birthday! Ha
I keep thinking about your post about having such good healthcare. You are so lucky. Between all of the diagnostics and therapy they did to decide they were going to do a revision surgery on me and landing between two deductibles my one hip ended up costing around $8000. (And I have good insurance)
So jealous!

The muscle spasms are still there but at the moment they are only waltzing! But they can go from waltzing to a foxtrot to a polka and then an all out bird dance!
Legin what did you do for this pain in the glute?

@Birdie53 regarding our free health care. You said in the end you had to pay $8000. I asked my surgeon what the cost of just one of my implants were and he said about $8000.!:flabber: Yes our "free" health care is awesome and after having my two hip surgeries and all the physio,I will never take it for granted, but one of the drawbacks is we do not get to "shop around" for our surgeon or hospital! We can not go out of province either.

Day 7 Post - Op
Had a good day today. Finally got those muscle cramps under control from yesterday. I don't know if this is related but up until yesterday it hurt to sit in a chair for very long because of the pain in my "glute" but since all those muscle cramps I can now sit comfortably for longer than 1/2 hour.!
I had my first shower today! Need I say more!
Tomorrow will be my first outpatient physio. (This means a 60mile/100km car trip)I will have physio each week for 12 weeks.

Yippee for the shower! Such small things can bring us such joy. We need to remember that.
In reference to your healthcare. Mine is kind of the same cannot go "out of network" or we have to pay substantially more. Actually the whole thing all said and done was over $140,000 and I paid $5400 the rest came from other things that the Doctor did the previous year to diagnose. I always try to be grateful that I have the insurance but for many people I know it would still be out of reach to pay their monthly premium and then pay the $5400 on top. I am glad I have had the means. Especially since I retired so young. Many people stay in pain.
Miserable. Would move to Canada but it's too darn cold! Ha

So glut problem. Hard ice pack? Heating pad always works best for me. Before doctor fixed this hip it was causing terrible glut and Piriformis pain I iced and did heat alternately. The meds don't really help. Once you can get the heel slides closer to your butt that seems to help.
Keep getting better!k

@Birdie53 regarding my ice packs... No they are soft, homemade ones, water and rubbing alcohol put in a ziplock then hubby vacuum seals it in a pouch( no leaks that way!) they stay cold so much longer even once they are thawed out.
The heat is what would really help I'm sure but I am just reluctant to be using heat so soon after surgery, since my incision is about where I would want the heat!
Cold here in Canada, now where did you hear that? Heehee! Actually we have been having some extremely mild weather the past week. The last 3 days it has been above freezing. So when it does turn cold everything will be glare ice!
Regarding the heel slides you are right, it's just getting them started that is painful. Once they are started I can get the slide real close to my butt( actually closer than I can on the hip I had done 5 months ago!) I think this is why the spasms were better today because I did 10 real good heel slides, I'm glad you mentioned this too and it was not just me thinking that maybe that is what helped! Thank you.

Day 8 Post - Op
Had my first out-patient PT today. My PT sessions are group based but also with one on one time as well. They never gave me any new exercises besides what I left the hospital with, I kinda figured this because last time my first PT was two weeks post-op and not at one week like this time. I still went though because the muscles on this leg were out of "wack" in a different way than on my first hip and I had some concerns that they addressed. Oh and I was quite worried about how much longer my left leg now feels compared to my left..... Yes I know this is mostly in my head but I just needed that reassurance!
My therapist was quite happy with my progress, and noted how well I was doing and even commented on how relaxed my movements were this second time around. Since I was the "experienced" one at my PT session I received a lot of questions from the "first timers"! It felt good to be able to help and offer my input.
So I was waiting for that "energy drain" to hit after my first big outing since coming home but it did not happen! Don't get me wrong I still need my sleep in the afternoon - a two hour one! I guess because I am sleeping well at night and resting in the afternoon that energy drain might not happen, but then again once I slowly increase my activity it could show up!
