THR Now my hip has given out

Hi all. Thanks for your replies. I got a letter today telling me to call the physio dept at hospital to make an appointment to be seen. I will phone them on Monday to see when I can be seen. I really don't think physio will help but I guess I need to go through these channels down here. I didn't need to do this at previous hospital.
@Lilli215 I am in Dumfries and Galloway. I just moved here from Fife in October. My knees were done at Kirkcaldy and my surgeon was really great with me.
I walked the dogs today but only for 2 miles and my hip was agony. It hurt from groin down inside of thigh. Like you Lilli215 my new knees seem to be hurting and I bet it's because I'm limping with the hip. I worry about falling as my hip gives out every so often. I'm just so angry at my body. Get knees right and another part gives up.
Good luck on 8th. Let me know how you get on? What hospital are you getting it done at?

Unfortunately many areas are requiring patient to go through these roadblocks. You are right - physio won't do anything for you. Just work the system and don't do anything that aggravates that hip. Fingers crossed you get through this gate quickly and can get a surgery date.

Phoned up for appointment today as letter says to call to make appointment. Can't get seen until 24th January.

@Mollymax Maybe you can ask to be put on the cancellation list in case something opens up sooner. In the meantime, try to take it easy which I realize is easier said than done. I can’t quite imagine walking 2 miles just before my hip surgery. My hip didn’t hurt when sitting or sleeping but it hurt nearly every time I took a step, sometimes worse than others. By the time my surgery date came, I was anxious to get it done and get on with recovery just to get ride of that pain. At times these recommendations made by non medical people are ridiculous but we seem to have to play their game to move on. Wishing you all the best.

@Mollymax, in Crosshouse Hosp in North Ayrshire and had op on the 8th. Stiff and sore and can’t sleep (2.30 am) at the moment. Will be glad to get home xx

@Mollymax, got home on Sunday running ahead of Storm Brendan!! Managed seven hours last night but that was a combination of heavy jit of codeine and sheer exhaustion!! Don’t think I’ll manage that again tonight unfortunately. On the upside all the groin pain is no more- such a relief- and my knees are fine at mo but that’ll be due to the pain meds I’m on. Hope you didn’t get hit too badly with the storm, the storm surge has caused a bit of coastal flooding on Arran but nothing else thank goodness.

I totally get it! I had a spine fusion, and just prior to the fusion began having terrible groin pain. The surgeon said based on the nerves that were constricted, it was possible that it was from the spine. I had a hip xray and the found several small bone spurs. Fast forward to 4 months after the spine surgery and the hip is nearly totally fused. I absolutely did NOT want another surgery or to deal with any more recovery. But as the hip got worse...my knee and leg radiated horrible pain. I was convinced I was now going to need a knee replacement too. I had my R THR and the knee pain totally vanished. You deserve a pain free life.

@Lilli215 I am glad you are home and that you are finding relief already. The hroin pain is so much worse than my knee pain ever was so that's good it is no more.
I am so fed up with being in pain. First I had years of it with my knees now my hip. Things move so slowly here in Scotland I expect it will take a long time to sort out. Physio appt isn't till next Friday and I know that is really just a waste of time.

Oh, @Mollymax, my heart goes out to you. The wheels do seem to move so slowly and it is soooo agonizing, literally and figuratively. I had a flashback this week to around a year ago when I was waiting for my surgery consult after jumping through the hoops for months. After a 12 hour work shift, cleaning the snow off my car, I was barely able to get into it and started crying while it warmed up because the pain was so bad. Then when I got home, I couldn’t get my boots off because of the pain and sat on the stairs sobbing until my husband came to help me. So, the rest of us understand and are right there with you. Hang in there the best you can. We’ll be here for you until you have your date for relief. Then we’ll be there for you the rest of the way. Prayers for comfort, strength, and patience. ❤️ Pat

@Mollymax hang on in there, the physio might be a consultant physio whose job is to triage you and refer you to a consultant orthopod. Once that happens ask if Dumfries and Galloway have a contract with the Golden Jubilee Hospital in Clydebank who clear waiting lists for orthopaedics for various health boards in Scotland, if so askfor a referral there and you are normally done within a couple of months xx

@Lilli215 Thanks for that info. My physio appt was cancelled at the last minute last week. They have rescheduled it for Friday. Some days hip is ok other days it's very painful.

@Mollymax I was like that for ages. X-rays were inconclusive as they showed I still had some cartilage and wasn’t completely bone on bone. Eventually had to go in as a day patient , get put under a general anaesthetic then get local anaesthetic injected directly into hip joints, if the pain had gone when I came round it was the hip, if I still had the pain then it was coming from somewhere else! The pain had gone when I woke up and it was bliss to move about and walk normally, Surgeon said there and then that he was putting me on his list.

Hip agony today on a short dog walk. Really bad. Physio called cancelling this Fridays appt. Wanted to give me another one a week later. Said that wasn't good enough. Eventually they said they would fit me in tomorrow.

Good for you to be firm in asserting that you need help, canceling once, I can understand but twice? well, unless they are short staffed with sickness? Good luck tomorrow!

How did it go?

Well I did the weeks off physio as required. Physio agreed there has been deterioration and decided physio wasn't doing any good so I am now being referred to orthopedics. 12 week wait for appointment in this area I have been told. I wouldn't have had to wait so long had I not moved. Wish I was back there as I trusted my surgeon there. Having to go to a different hospital is daunting.

Yes, I imagine it would be unsettling to go to a new surgeon and hospital. Are you far from your former OS? Is there any chance you can still have the procedure there so you can be comfortable. I have to admit I do not understand the way your system works so just throwing out ideas as I know some people in the states have even flown to India to have joint replacements done.

Try to take it easy on your hip during your wait time. I do know from my experience that having two strong knees makes the recovery much easier for the hips.

I was wondering this very same thing! As Leejaa... is there any possibility of traveling to your former surgeon?
If not, then you will need to research and ask the questions that you did before your TKR's and know you did the best that you could. You should be able to duplicate a good outcome again, and I am wishing that for you.

I wish I could but I would have to be registered with a doctor in Fife to be referred to previous surgeon. I even thought of saying I had moved in with daughter to allow me to register at a fife doctor but then I would need to drive over 2hrs everytime I need to see a doctor for anything at all. I have thought about phoning her secretary to see if there is anything they could do. I'm not even sure if she does hips.
I was out walking today and most of the walk was fine but hip gave way a couple of times. That's scary as I'm frightened off falling and damaging my knees.
