THR My recovery

Awesome! If interested in sharing you can post a photo in the following thread. -

I hope you have a great Thursday and weekend as you continue healing. :)
@longtimechemist

Great news about your wound check up.. isn't it amazing how quickly that incision heals up?

I also found paracetamol (acetaminophen/Tylenol) to be very helpful in pain control - I did not take any narcotics after the ones I had the first night while in hospital. Started with 1000mg 4 times per day, then reduced the amount as pain faded.

I wanted to expand on this advice in regards to taking Tylenol.. I thought it was most effective, too.
You probably already know this but just make sure none of your other medications have tylenol or acetaminophen in them. If they do, you will need to factor that into your total amount taken daily.

Glad you had a good follow up appointment,, it's is so reassuring. @longtimechemist

I used this regimen also.

Do not exceed 4000 mg in any 24 hr period.

Thanks @ ForumUser
I’m keeping a record of the medication taken each day, as as the start there was quite a lot to keep track of...
Paracetamol is only on one of the meds, so it’s been easy to stick to the 4g in 24 hours rule.

First, I stole this meme (I believe that’s the correct word...) from another thread on BS. I hope that person doesn’t mind.
Today it is very true for me. Yesterday I did a thing. I visited my GP to have the wound dressing removed. It involved a 10 minute car journey each way (driven by someone else, of course!). Today I will not be doing any more things, as the pain level has increased. It was ok overnight, but this morning not comfortable. I’ve increased the meds a bit to get back ahead of it.
Thanks to BS I understand that this is all part of the recovery journey, and I’m not anxious about it.

I love that meme also.
Your plan is just the way to do it these early days.
It always somewhat confuses me when I see some overzealous members intent on hailing what they must think are victories...dropping medication early, insisting on pushing the physical activity even when it is painful, documenting how much they can do.
Of course the endgame is to do all these things.
But our bodies consider this hip fix an assault, and are working ever so hard to overcome it.
So the meds and the rest and even the acceptance that keeps stress down, are all to help our bodies do their job and heal.
Hope your weekend is restful and restorative.

Hi all

It's been two weeks since my THR, so time for an update, I think.

This past week I have made a couple of attempts at reducing the pain meds. I have been using 1000mg of paracetamol 3 or 4 times a day, plus 30 or 60mg of codeine phosphate each time. When I reduced the dosage the pain came back, so for a few more days I'm sticking with this routine.

I haven't been able to sleep in any position apart from my back. Lying on the operated side feels like lying on a balloon (although the swelling isn't huge when I look at it). Lying on the other side with a cushion between the knees makes everything around the new joint ache. It's not a big deal, but it gets tedious without any options.

I am very pleased with how I have recovered so far, although at times it has been two steps forward, one step back. Again, fairly normal I think. My scar is very neat and I'm sure given time it will fade a lot further. It's been great to have a shower again since the dressing was removed on Thursday!

So, if you're in the first few days of recovery right now, keep believing - it does get better!

:wave:Two weeks and you sound to be doing very well!:ok:

Aah...memories.:umm:
Much sympathy here and I dare not depress you with how long the real sleep in a bed part of the puzzle took to fall in place for me.
We are all different and I just had to resign myself to power naps and recliner snoozing until it was possible.

Thanks for the update.
It was about this time in my recovery that it really hit home that even though there was alot of issues to still resolve, that hip joint pain was gone!:yahoo:

hi @longtimechemist.
I assume you are not a back sleeper. I have never been able to sleep on my back before the surgery and was very concerned how I will manage it once I am back from the hospital.
For that reason I bought a recliner and never regretted it. I slept the very first 17 nights after the surgery in it... forced to be on my back. It wasn't easy but helped a lot.
Since then, I sleep in my bed and noticed the back position is no more uncomfortable as it used to be.
Two steps forward, one step back feels fairly normal after only two weeks post surgery.
Take it easy… it’s getting better!

Happy Two Week Anniversary!
Glad you're sticking with the meds for now so the pain is under control and you're able to say mobile.

So, if you're in the first few days of recovery right now, keep believing - it does get better!

What a guy! So positive and upbeat. I hope you continue to do well. Lots of healing to happen so it's going to continue getting better and better! :happydance:
A great weekend to you!
@longtimechemist

I’m on day 16 post-op and doing well. My current pain meds are 1000mg paracetamol and 60mg codeine phosphate every 6 hours. The pain is under control and I’m never above a 2 on the 1 to 10 scale.
When the time comes to reduce, is it better to stay with 6-hourly but reduce the doses, or go to (say) 8-hourly with the same doses initially? Or doesn’t it make any difference?
What are people’s experiences?

@longtimechemist you will notice that I have merged your two threads together as we prefer that members in recovery only have one thread.

This is for three reasons:
1. if you keep starting new threads, you miss the posts others have left you in the old threads
2. it often ends up that information is unnecessarily repeated
3. it's best if we can keep all your recovery story in one place so it's easily accessed if we need to advise you.

Please keep all your questions and updates on this thread. If you would like a new thread title just give a shout.

When you start forgetting doses of your medication then it's a sign you are weaning off. The dose missed is usually the midday one.

I was on Tylenol 1000 mg and prescribed Oxycocet 5mg (1 or 2 tablets every 4 hours) and Oxycodone HCL 10mg (1 tablet twice daily for 5 days).
Like you... I was never in much pain. I didn't stop taking the prescribed meds but started experimenting. I never took any of the 10mg Oxycodone HCL as I really found unnecessary.
I experimented with 5mg Oxycocet. I first started to take them even 6 hours instead every 4 hours... then every 8 hours... then reduced from 2 to 1 tablet every 8 hours. Eventually I ended up on Tylenol only.
I would say this was possible just because I really did not experience much pain in the operated hip and would not suggest this to others who are in pain most of the time.
:)
