Hi
@Annelize Buys , and best wishes from the northern hemisphere!
You're doing great. Sounds like another success story. And the scenery around Capetown is absolutely marvellous. It's interesting for me - reading all the recovery stories all over the world. I've never been to South Africa before but I'd like to go.
In Germany - we are more or less forced to take it slow and easy after a hip replacement - standard hospital stay is 7 days (not 2) and then it's wisest to go to a rehab centre for 3 weeks - not required but people usually go. I went because this stopped me from being tempted to do too much housework at home.
Like you - I did some marathons before my hip replacement - including London, Malta, Munich, and many other lovely places. As in your case, the pain started with minor thigh pain after my marathon in the city of Mainz in 2013 and didn't subside but wasn't bad enough for me to see a doctor. Finally in 2014, I saw one and was diagnosed with bone-on-bone osteoarthritis in my left hip. I finally managed to have surgery on 20 April 2015.
You will be fine soon. You probably will be able to ditch your pain-killers soon - not on day 10, that's true, but maybe after 4 weeks. I just had Diclofenac mornings and evenings for 2 weeks and then just one Diclofenac in the evening in the 3rd week. After that, I stopped taking pain meds and felt ok. I used my crutches until week No 4 and managed to drive after 4 weeks. I used the exercise bike after 10 days and went into the pool at the rehab centre after 12 (when I had the stitches out) - crawl swimming on my own and aqua gymnastics with a group. Today, I can cycle long-distances, swim about 1.5 km, run in the forest near my workplace during my lunch hour and even managed to do a half-marathon about 3 weeks ago (not racing, just for practice) although that took me 2 3/4 hours. However, I took it easy during the first 6 weeks and didn't start jogging until after 13 weeks post OP.
What sort of pain-killer are you taking? Are you getting any medicine for thrombosis prevention or just the stockings? I'd agree they are a pain in summer. I just received Xarelto for 6 weeks (at first as injections and later on in tablet form). After my 7-day stay in hospital, I was no longer required to wear the thrombosis stockings.
Keep up the good recovery - best wishes for a lovely summer to you
