One thing is definite knee pain stinks!! Only difference how much. For those who have only had 1 or 2 replacements its bad but once you have numerous even something somewhat minor becomes a major pain. Have decided to try taking it easy and while yes it better pain wise its still not great either I just have to face facts its going to take time and that could easily be months.

I just have to face facts it's going to take time and that could easily be months.
That is nothing unusual, even for a knee that has had only one surgery. Time is the best thing you can give your knee.

Agree but the more surgeries the longer the heal time. Not implying any replacement or revision is not painful they all hurt it's just as I have found out the hard way surgeries take longer for me to heal.

Patience! Good things take time.

I agree but patience is not something you can buy or rent etc and in my family ( father was from Germany, mom's parents from Germany ) that trait or the lack of, has been passed down. Going thru a TKR, Revision, Partial, etc they all hurt in fact myself included the first time I had a TKR I had no idea how bad it was going to hurt and for how long. Looking back boy do I wish my recovery time now in a manner of speaking was that short!!. Revision#6 took just over a year for it to really start feeling better. Based on this last revision I am hoping 6 months or less???
This time around not concerned about Flexion at the hospital I was already over 100 last time it was checked over 120. What I am lacking in is extension started at -9 now at -4. As of yet not strengthening but working on stretching yes going by numbers a 5 degree change is good but what is still very weak is the quad. If I am sitting with the right leg I can hold it straight out no problem with my left it has about a 45 to 55degree bend no matter how hard I try just cannot get it straighter. This has been an ongoing problem for several years. Since pain and I hate each other until my pain level gets better not going to worry with getting the quad stronger yet.
Question time?? This is not done all the time only when pain is on the nutty side when stretched out on sofa ( yes I ice LOTS!! ) and elevate I know your not supposed to put pillow under knee for fear of blood clotting. I am taking Xarelto?? as a blood thinner so I cannot see where blood clotting is a big issue at this time. In an ideal world the pillow should be somewhere from mid calf to heel this will allow gravity to help with extension or once again depending on how I feel I prop my leg on my ottoman but after 20 30 minutes its pretty sore. At night the same if it feels ok no pillow but when it isn't pillow under knee if on back or between knees if on side. Any comments or suggestions??

I’m only 5 weeks out, and my extension isn’t as good as some folks’, but I have gladly accepted a little slower recovery for the comfort of allowing some bend in my knee.

I’m not sure how this relates to blood clots; I thought the idea was to keep from slowing circulation by preventing a lot of pressure on the back of your knee.

You are suffering so much pain, I’d allow a little bend in your knee for the sake of some relief.

@Helizabug Maybe I am wrong I thought about that then found this:

Maybe what you are thinking of is that you shouldn't put a pillow behind your knee while you are lying on your back? (Thus bending it.) You shouldn't do that, because it could impair the circulation, and make you more prone to a thrombosis. So, if you lie on your back, don't put a pillow under your knee.
this goes along with what I have been told countless times ( could not remember exactly ) I do allow some bending if I were to keep it straight while trying to comfortable I would be going nuts!! This is not my first time ( really wish it was BOY DO I WISH IT WAS!!! ). One thing that I can say positively knee surgeries hurt and hurt and hurt sort of like the Energizer Bunny that keeps going and going!!!

Yes Celle is correct. I was concerned that you thought you couldn’t have any bend in your knee, which I think is sheer torture. But, as you explained, you aren’t forcing your knee straight all the time.

I do allow some bending if I were to keep it straight while trying to comfortable I would be going nuts!!

I know it’s hard to be advised to have patience when you feel like you’ve been patient through so many surgeries. So, I’m not going to say that. I hope things improve soon, and you look back at this month as a crummy handful of weeks, followed by steady improvement.

Not to be pessimistic but the odds of feeling a whole lot better are doubtful that I am afraid is going to take a few months. There is hope that some improvement pain wise every month is possible. It would be awesome if pain level would drop from the avg.of 7 to an avg of 6.5 by next month. If at the end of what ever my recovery time is the pain were to settle down to a 4 now that would be like winning the lottery. Time will tell.

Has anyone had a day that you planned to do nothing just relax try to stay comfortable?? Ha Ha SOld a rcvr on Ebay last night found that out this morning. Had to go to Lowes get a box and shipping tape like a dummy needed more then I bought so had to make second trip. Once rcvr boxed went to FedEX ( 3 short trips in 90 minutes. Then daughter made a mistake on direct deposit to her apartment 1500.00 mistake . My mom starts fussing at me what??? Made a few phone calls daughter had to get it fixed at bank. Then nurse shows up nothing out of ordinary still concerned about how warm the knee is but based on what the surgeon said not worried. Lastly sold something for daughter once again nothing to cause more pain. All the moving around this morning plus with the rest of the day just wore out. Maybe tomorrow I will have better luck doing nothing.

@sistersinhim or anyone else In theory I agree and most nurses and Dr's agree to this also but this is reality. If your given ex. 28pills of 10mg Oxy and your supposed to take 1 every 6 hours that is 7 days worth that is it!! If I were to follow what the script says exactly what are the odds I will get a refill?? Whether its right or wrong I have to make the pain meds last and still get some relief. In my case I take a 5mg Oxy early 6am depending on how I feel another around 11 if by 3pm still feeling okay another and maybe 1 more around 9. The bad days the change from previous instead of taking a 3rd 5mg at 3pm I will take a 10mg. It really stinks to do it this way but considering how tight things are with writing out scripts for pain there really is no choice. ( had this talk with surgeon's nurse, she agrees ). Not that this is funny but prior to going to hospital they give you info on pain management before and after and it really emphasizes the importance of adequate pain control once you are discharged. We all know no one heals the same the more surgeries you have had the longer it takes but when it comes to writing the scripts you may get a weeks worth if your lucky two and then depending on your surgeon you should be able to get more maybe. None of this is to complain just what I have experienced.

Unfortunately, everyone is in the same crunch when it comes to adequate pain meds. There's nothing anyone can do about it. It is so unfair that the people who really need the pain meds can't get them because of a few who has abused them.

@sistersinhim What you read from me is like listening to a broken record. Yesterday was another day dedicated to pain!! It started off pretty good ( even starting to think its feeling better Ha Ha ). The day went south when I had to go to store and get a few items, went to first store got what I needed went to pay OOPS forgot wallet, went back home got wallet went to Target in and out 20 minutes by the time I got home not good. I had a visit from the nurse after she left 40 minutes later PT came by this was the icing on the cake!! Did some stretching to improve extension then a short walk 15 minutes max. After that I was done. The rest of the day was ice and elevating.
Today much better but still not great either ( if this makes sense normal pain?? ). You would think since I seem to be a pro at knee surgeries I would be use to this?? My best guess it will be June before things go back to my version of normal maybe??

Your revision wasn't even done a month ago. I'll sound like a broken record, too. You're doing too much! You are creating all your pain and no one else. All the things you did yesterday should not have been done until your knee is 3-4 months old. If you follow the guidelines below, you'll heal with a lot less pain and swelling.

@sistersinhim broken record or not sometimes the doing too much is not the problem. Today its a crummy rainy day and there have been numerous times for not other reason but the change in the weather that will cause pain. Sometimes whether you like it or not you have to go to store and get a few items. If you include drive time everything start to finish less then 40 minutes. Living alone can be difficult at times but it is what it is, I have no one to make the quick trip to store and back its just me. I may have walked to far with therapist may even tried to hard to complete some of the stretching. Hindsight knowing I had therapy should have gone to store today but even today having done nothing still pretty blah.

If you find yourself having to make an unexpected errand, call and reschedule your therapy. That trip IS your therapy session. Doing both is too much and that's why you hurt so much afterwards.

That trip IS your therapy session.
This is why we say your daily activities are all you need to do, especially in the early weeks. And because you live alone, with no one right there to help you do things, or totally do them for you, your knee is getting all the mobility it needs through your daily activities. Your knee will strengthen naturally as you heal.

Good / Bad ?? Took first pain med this morning 6am took it easy for the most part all day. Went to Barnes and Noble to get a couple books then to grocery store few items done by 10am. At 3pm had to go by a Dr's office 20 miles round trip. I was back by 415pm so okay did over do it ?? On the positive side I did not take any pain meds until I got home!! I went 10 hours in between so okay how does it feel now well yes it hurts but the round trip to Dr's office plus the walk to office was a little much but 10 hours in between meds!! Now I will admit I took a 10mg this time but still over the course of 1 day 15 mg total not bad!! Not great but better??

@Jockette Your way of doing therapy is great as long as it works for you. My way may be more painful but the results are there. Wednesday the therapists took some measurements Flexion 135 ( better then before last revision ) Extension -3 ( had to really push first time she checked -7 ). Going by the numbers not bad!! Also noticed while yes it still hurts it does not seem to be as continuous as it was a week or so ago. Granted after therapy I am done for the day between pain swelling etc but the next day while still sore not nearly as bad. Pain is not totally gone but going by pain scale instead of 6 plus days now I am starting to see a few days less then 6 maybe 5.5. One more week of inpatient PT then start outpatient.

Slow but progress!! One more day of at home PT signed the discharge papers today. Outpatient starts Jan.31 9am. Looking forward to break in therapy. Therapist took it easy on me today since I over did earlier. Yesterday I sold all the fish in my 75 gallon and I hate an empty tank!!. Today starting this morning took everything off the tank filters heaters rocks gravel etc. Siphoned out approx 45 gallons of water then cleaned all of it and put it back together including adding water the easy way used a hose from outside to partially fill it then added known good water for the rest. All said and done finished by 130 therapist came at 2. Did a short walk and took some measurements finished paperwork. Fexion 132 Extension with a lot of effort meaning I am straining therapist pushing I got to -2 other wise -5. Lots of ice today ( wonder why?? ) Yes I complain and yes it gets old as in real old but I have noticed the days where I am really taking it easy ( no going to store not working on any stupid projects ) just a normal day I can on occasion get to a 5 to 5.5 but its not an everyday thing once in awhile. Hopefully fingers crossed no more surgeries on the knee anytime soon I really want to beat the average for me its a revision every 2 to 3 years my goal is to make it to 4 or 5 before I need another??
