@MrsHippie thanks for the update. Sounds like Mr H is doing very well. Cane already and good for you assigning some small "chores". Well done to you for being such a great support for him through this! It will only get better!

Hi there. Today is 5 weeks since Howie's LTHR and our 49th wedding anniversary. :loveshwr:I am happy to say that he is doing great. In the past week he has been going out and about with me. He was released to drive on Tuesday. Yes, @Jaycey, I was so worried about him getting in a car and now it's easy as pie. You were so right.

His incision looks fabulous. Just a straight line that is healed completely from the outside. We are walking in our neighborhood every morning. It's challenging but you have to walk up and down some decent hills. Howie is using only one cane. Today, however, he walked away and forgot it!! He is doing a few PT exercises but not pushing himself. No clamshells!

We are very aware that it is still early days and this is where you could end up in trouble. I am insisting that he nap every afternoon. He agrees to lie down and is sound asleep within five minutes. :heehee:

He sees the OS on July 13. At that point, we can ask about his restrictions. His discharge papers say they are permanent. :groan:

Off to spend our anniversary evening at a concert in our local park. Thanks again to all who post. Your info has been beyond helpful.

Cheers, Denise

Great update Mrs H! Sounds like hubby has done all the right things to get through this recovery. Well done to you both!
His discharge papers say they are permanent.
This is very old school thinking. The only lifetime restrictions I have are no bungee jumping or parachuting! Since I would not do either I am not worried. Of course the decision is your husband's. But lifetime restriction are rare.

Yes I would certainly question the lifetime restrictions when you see the OS. Mr H is doing very well, bit then he has a wonderful supportive wife - good for you!

When I discussed restrictions my OS said to me as he twisted himself into a rag doll tangle (which is the best way I can describe it) - "I don't want you trying this...." We had a great laugh about it.

As for the lack of a BM, try adding milk of magnesia to the prune juice. Mix them together. Tastes like a coffee shake. This will work so be prepared to to the bathroom. This cocktail is from the nursing staff at the hospital.

Hi Everyone!

Mr Hippie's surgery was two months ago yesterday. On Monday, he saw his OS and all is fine! We are in Monterey celebrating!!! :dancy:

He is still using a cane to make sure he keeps his gait even. No big deal, he looks dashing. :roseshwr:

We have a few thoughts that might help some others. Howie is a big guy, so a bariatric walker gave him the width he needed even thought he is only 250 lbs.

We found the toilet riser was hard for him to use. The handles were too close and even though we got one that bolted to the toilet, it slipped. We ended up getting a commode which was ugly but worked. :rotfl:

The hospital bed was perfect. It allowed him to get in and out of bed without any stress or strain. He was also able to really elevate his legs. As of last night, we are now sleeping in the same bed. :loveshwr:

A 4" pillow in the car was very helpful. We also packed a sturdy "directors" chair in the trunk. That and the pillow afforded him the ability to visit friends and go to concerts and soccer games and not compromise his restrictions or worry about where he could sit!

We believe some or all of the above helped him have a very quick and pain free recovery.

@Jaycey, @Poppet, your input was so important.

Poppet, I cooked every meal, 3 times a day for 6 straight weeks. Using your guidelines and many trips to farmers markets.

Jaycee, your calm answers to my questions were wonderful. :wow:

Of course, without Bonesmart none of this would have been possible. Once again THANK YOU ALL from the bottom of our hearts!!!!!:cheers::prayer:

Denise ( Mrs Hippie)

We love hearing these great updates! So happy we were able to help you and Mr Hippie through this journey. Well done to you for supporting him so much!

@Jaycey, @Cynthia777 happy to be able to report such a positive outcome. Truly Bonesmart Forum had a very big part in this effort. Howie just walked 3 miles! An amazing accomplishment for a man that has never liked to walk. Healthy hips or not! :egypdance:

Cheers, Denise

Happy New Year!!! :flwrysmile:Many wishes for a healthy and happy 2016 for all!!! I am very happy to report that Mr Hippie is doing great. It has been 7 months since his TLHR. Life is back to normal for both of us. Amazing.

This time last year, he was in so much pain he had to retire from his beloved job, could barely walk with two canes no less. We were both scared to death of what the future held. :yikes:

He is pain free. He was able to walk 8 miles with me in Honolulu in October.:wowspring: We feel so blessed to have found this forum. The information here really helped both before and after surgery.

Whenever anyone comments on Howie's recovery, he tells them he had a fabulous nurse :roseshwr: He also tells everyone that I got all my info from Bonesmart. :thankyou:

Cheers and Happy New Year, Denise :loveshwr:
