TKR MoragsMum's Recovery

Well aren't you a lucky bonesmartie! I too have a PT that let's me lead the way with suggestions from her. I'm not sure if that's because I set perimeters on the first visit or it's because my numbers are good.

I have a question about weight loss after TKR. Pre-op, I weighed 79 kg, then over a couple of weeks lost 4 kgs, and this morning I saw another kilo down. I am certainly eating (healthily), but my appetite is far from what it used to be. Am incapable of second helpings, never a bad thing! Less weight is certainly good for less pressure on the replaced knee, and I'm just wondering how long this weight loss will last - is it totally linked to appetite? While wandering the internet I found this: Quote: Among a study group of 196 patients, researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine found that nearly 20% lost at least 5% or more of their body weight and experienced a significant decrease in body mass index (BMI) -- a measurement of height and weight -- after undergoing total joint replacement, or arthroplasty. BMI decreases were greater among knee replacement patients (21.5%) than hip replacement patients (16.9%), researchers reported. Unquote The URL is https://www.webmd.com/osteoarthriti...nts-lose-weight-after-total-joint-replacement Are there any Bone Smarties who lost weight and kept it off in the longer term?

I lost a stone ( just over 6kgs) post LTHR. I was not dieting and can't really say I was eating differently. The only thing I could contribute the loss to was that I was moving around more.

I did keep the weight off for many years. Then the pandemic hit and....well many of us are suffering from all this.

Thanks Jaycey, that's really interesting! Hope to be moving around more soon(ish).:)

Sadly unless one continues to move and eat less calories the weight will creep back on, I too lost weight after my surgery, but like you, my appetite isn't what it used to be plus I'm no longer drinking alcoholic beverages, wine has many calories plus I'm moving about more, would love to think this will continue but ....

I've lost 45 lbs. since my TKR @MoragsMum. I too noticed my appetite had decreased after TKR, and it decreased even farther after my THR 10 months later. I went from 220 to 175 lbs. I'm much more active now that I have 2 good joints again, and between that and my appetite never really returning it has been easy to keep off. Of course moving to a hot humid climate has helped keep the appetite in check.:heehee:

Yes indeed the month without any alcohol while taking nasty medications has left its traces. I'm hardly drinking alcohol any more

Hot and humid really does the trick!!

I have lost 10lbs and so far it is staying off! I have another 10 to go!!
The weight loss was definitely related to my TKR, and I intend to use that as a jump start, of sorts!:dancy:

Yesterday I went for session 2 with the great and gentle physio. She suggested I use a compression stocking at night, to feel more control over the surgical leg. Till now I've used a rather massive yoga bolster to keep the leg in place at night, but husband finds this third-party in bed a bit surprising when he encounters it at night LOL. I got up this morning feeling much better - less swelling and a sense of security. She also said I can wear it during the day when out and about. Does anyone do this? Right after the surgery I used one for 2 or three days but abandoned it quickly... Thanks for any input :)
Dear moderators, can you change the name of my thread to MoragsMum's Recovery (having put the aggressive therapy behind me!)

Many of our members are prescribed compression socks for post op. Glad they are working for you.

Thread title changed!

Here in Portugal, we are told to wear the full length compression stockings day and night for 30 days after surgery, whilst we receive the lovenox blood thinner injections. As I found them too uncomfortable at night I only used during the day, but they do help compress the swelling enormously.
I'm fortunate my husband moved into the spare bedroom for both my surgeries so I have plenty of space for extra pillows etc and can wriggle around to my hearts content without disturbing anyone x
I always use the knee length stockings when I fly anywhere, as in the past I had trouble with varicose veins.

@MoragsMum Here where I live you wear the compression stockings up till 6 weeks, you have to wait till the OS gives you permission to stop wearing them. I found them good at the beginning, a bit warm but comfortable. They definitely helped with the swelling while wearing them. I wore them 24 hours a day for 6 weeks, unfortunately the pair I had were poorly fitted, they went to the knee but as they were too long they ended up folded under the toes or folded down at the knee- neither of these should be done. If I was going to wear them again after surgery I would want them properly fitted, wear them 24 hours for the first 4 weeks, and then only during the day time for another 2 weeks. If they help you and feel comfortable wear them, they are great at keeping swelling at bay.

Thanks Sara61, you're blessed with your husband, I actually longed to be the sole owner of the bed, but now hope to continue with the marital accord :heehee:.Underneath the stocking I did the plastic foil/wrap with soothing cream, so it was real bliss. Hoping to use them when flying, whenever that great day arrives...

Thanks. Luckily it's still winter(ish) in Israel, I can imagine when the weather heats up it could be too warming. The reduced swelling feels great!
