THR lotusbuds' recovery thread

So this happened on Thursday night. This may inspire all of you just in the beginning of recovery as it was a real surprise to me.
I was driving home alone around 9pm from a dinner with friends. Sometimes at night I lock the car door from the inside when I drive through areas I am not comfortable in. So I get home and the door won't open from the inside.
I can't get out!
I try everything but its not opening. I put down the window but couldn't get it open.
So I sit there thinking if I should call my husband to come out to help me or try to figure it out. After a few minutes I decide to climb over the seat and go out the passenger door.
Now before surgery this would not be possible as my right hip was in so much pain but I decide to do it. I put the seat as far back as it will go and lo and behold I lift and adjust and lift and adjust my right leg and with no pain get over to the other side and out. My left knee which is my issue these days did not hurt as I wasn't weight bearing.
At that moment a flash went off in my head of when the OS said at 9 months you will be almost healed (he says a year) but you won't remember you had surgery. Now I still get swelling in upper thigh but only 1-2 days a day now which is way less and I feel pain sometimes if I have overdone it but the pain is not like my arthritic pain at all. I thought omg I did this...
By the way I am getting the door lock fixed this week but in the meantime if I put the window down all the way it is possible to open the door from the inside. Not sure why it wouldn't do it Thursday night but I think I didn't try hard enough at the right angle.
So everyone know that it only gets better. Slow but steady is how its been for me. Some people it goes really fast, with little pain, no meds, no aids but for most of us its a journey that takes its ups and downs.
Take it easy is my motto!

How amazing is that?! It really is those weird little things that happen during our day that make us look back and realize just how far we've come!
:driver:

I still can't believe I did it. I remember in the midst of it I thought I have a metal fake hip...be careful. I usually feel like I had surgery but its my hip that I've always had in there. So that was an eye opener.
@Elf1 please tell me what kind of trekking poles you bought. I find it interesting.
My husband took down the wooden walkway he built for me before surgery and its that last thing to go of all my aids. I have mixed feelings as we have one step to get into the house and its higher than standard steps. Its 11inches onto a deck. The path is all paver stones that are different steps and I can manage that now easily. I still find getting on and off the deck hard as there is no railing. Going down is more scary so I took out one trekking pole as its tall and use it to get up and down. I have 3 pairs so this is my least favorite one. I am hoping to stop using it but I need something so I don't fall. Challenges are a drag...thanks for listening.

Great news. Thanks for sharing! Glad you made it out, realizing you could!
Little surprises along the way. THR - the gift that keeps on giving.
Have a wonderful week! :)
@lotusbuds

@lotusbuds I don't have trekking poles, I just used a cane when I switched from the walker. I had mentioned something about the poles to my OS and he didn't seem to thrilled. Plus I'm thinking I'd probably stick out around here as there aren't a lot of places to hike close by. :heehee:

@Elf1 I must have you confused with someone else who told me they got trekking poles.. sorry. I use them on small trails in local parks. Or wherever but not on pavement. Take care.

 I was interested to read your difficulty with steps, albeit individual ones, and especially if there is no railing. This is my biggest problem now which I am determined to overcome by practising my balance which is very poor. Like you I find the going down quite scary even with the walker!

You seem to be progressing very well... I am jealous.

:heehee:
I discovered that I could jump and run really fast after I flipped a canoe over with a water moccasin in it.:running:
Really rather surprised me after the fact.
I've done many things since my surgery...but not break out into a full run.
Glad you were able to extract yourself with no repercussions!

Onward dear @lotusbuds
Christmas will be sweet.:yes!:

@Mojo333 that is amazing you could what happened to you in the canoe...I had to look up what a water moccasin is. Wow! that can be fatal I read...but isn't it cool to not feel the pain in your hip. Onward is right...so slow my knee is taking such a long time but its coming. As long as its going in the right direction I know its healing. Thanks dear Mojo!
@Izabel oh don't be jealous of me. I had my surgery March 1 and yes my hip is great but my knee has been painful since May...I guess if I look back though I am progressing well and need to acknowledge that so thank you very much! Yes going down is so scary as of course we don't want to fall. This one step down off our deck is 11" and standard steps are 7 I think. I can do it facing forward if there is a rail and I have my cane which is a Leki Walking stick...but...as there is no rail I have to put everything down and turn sideways, put my one trekking pole (as its longer than the walking stick) on the rock below or in the dirt. Then when I know its stable I go down and its not hurting so that is good but takes quite a long of concentration. Its not really getting easier either. Good luck with your balance. Thinking of you.

Aren't they amazing! they take all my weight off my knees and the pain is gone while using them. That is great you are doing slopes much less slippery ones. I find going downhill a challenge. Not on my operated hip but on my other knee.

Hi everyone
I'm not sure where to post this but I wanted to wish all those living in the US a Happy Thanksgiving! I'm actually Canadian but have lived in the US for many years so do celebrate it here.
I don't post often but think of you all a lot and sending my greetings.
Leslie

Hey @lotusbuds
Stopping by to say Hi and see how you're doing? I can't believe you're coming up on nine months already next week! I hope to hear your knee is feeling a little better also :fingersx:
Wishing you a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi @lotusbuds

I've moved your post, above, from Teresawebb's thread into your own.

Your best wishes for Thanksgiving were kind, but it's best to post in your own thread, unless you have something to say to support or encourage the person whose thread it is.

Thank you and I wish you a very Happy and contented Thanksgiving also!
We all have a lot to be thankful for, don't we?

Don't be a stranger,, it's fun seeing how well you are doing!

Thank you everyone and Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate it! I find it difficult sometimes to find my own thread so sorry I posted in the wrong thread and thanks for redirecting it.
I am doing well thank you. My hip continues to be good and I still go to Physio twice a week for my knee. I have a new one who gives me exercises based on her core pilates training and works me hard. Most seem to be for the hips so its good for me. My knee keeps improving but so slowly. Being arthritis and coming 2 months after my hip replacement has been such a downer for me and it may not completely heal but it just keeps getting better and I notice it in many ways. I have not been in the pool for 2 months due to laziness, having a virus, etc but got back in last week and it was like 'coming home'. I also noticed a huge improvement so will go back for 2 x a week to start and that will be huge for me though in the summer it was 5 x week.
Best of luck to you all! This forum has been a lifesaver to me. Thanks for letting me continue to pop in as often as I can.
Leslie

Hi there---I just saw a post of yours on another page and realized I hadn't seen you on the forum in quite awhile. Also haven't seen @Carriemay60, another person I used to see often. Hope you both are doing well. It sounds like your physical therapist is really trying to match your exercises to your needs. It's good that you are starting back to the pool slowly---with your PT you don't want to push too hard too fast.

At the end of the summer into the early fall I was seeing a PT for knee pain. It wasn't arthritis. One of the two issues with the knee has improved. The other, possibly a torn meniscus is better since I haven't been outside gardening and hiking/being as active. Hopefully the winter's rest will help---if not, I'll visit the surgeon in the spring for more tests/follow up. Enjoy your holidays!
