THR Long daily walks : good or bad ?

In my last post I wanted to say : " I'll do a short and relatively easy RACE" but I didn't type "race" anymore.
So,last week-end, I went to Baile Tusnad for a short and easy MTB race(28km/17miles and 700m/2300 feet elevation gain) . I felt great, the race was well organized and the weather was superb. What else can you ask for ?

Hi Mihal,

I stumbled across this thread from you, i recently joined up here a few weeks ago as i'm currently waiting on a LHR all being well within the next 6 months.

Anyway, like yourself i was a mountian biker but had to sell my bike due to the pain in my hip but funny enough i was able to keep riding my road bike until the pain got so bad i had to stop altogether.

All i wanted to say is that reading your post has made me want to get back into mountain 'racing' again. I've made myself a promise that i'm going to buy myself another bike and start racing again whenever i get over my operation.

Keep posting mate, your posts certainly have lifted my spirits.

Be strong ! You can do it ! I'm glad I lifted your spirit as others here lifted mine.
It is a very good thing that you are physically fit (from what I understand),because the muscles you have will help speed up your recovery. Be very careful of falling. All kinds of falling : tripping,a stair you didn't see (or something like that),slipping on ice and,of course, falling from your bike. As a mountain biker, you know that mtb and falling are almost synonyms. But I managed to go through a season without falling. I go as fast as I can up hill and I am very, very careful on the downhill. Sometimes, this means I'll lose a few positions at the end of a race. I have no chance at a podium,so I don't mind. But I still have my implants intact and I am ready to enjoy another race. So,my advise is : be careful. Ride like you stole it uphill, careful on the downhill.
Another part of mtb is equipment. Pay attention to that. A good fit on the bike is important but more important are the quality and durability of the equipment. Inspect your equipment more frequently to be sure that all bolts are tight, there are no cracks and the tires (and tubes,if you use them-I run tubeless) are in good shape. No matter how careful you are on the downhill,if your handlebar breaks or gets loose or the front tire flats and gets tangled between forks legs, only a miracle will keep you from falling.

Anyway,is this your first THR ? How old are you and what kind of implant do you get (cemented/un-cemented,plastic/metal/ceramic or a combination, etc) ?

Cheers mate, i worked in a bike shop here in Ireland for 9 years so i have the knowledge of maintaining bikes. I still do a bit from the house so any bikes i have are well maintained, i've nothing better to do now so i may as well look after them.

My road bike is the 2 last photos on the above thread.

As for the mounatin biking, well, i'm debate whether or not to go full suspension. I had one before and bar the pain of actually turning the pedals it was fine though a tad heavy, so i might actually go for a lighter hardtail and upgrade on components.

Most of the races here would'nt have a lot of downhills on them, they'd be very technical though, so a bit of jumping in and out of the saddle for me i reckon. It has been a few years since my last encounter of mountain bikes, hopefully it comes back to me quite quickly.

This will be my 1st total repalcement yes, though i did have a SUFE back in 1988 which needed 3 pins and a 30cm scar. I turned 40 there in June, the original operation was 2 days before my 16th birthday.

No idea of what i'm getting at the minute, no doubt i'll find that out @ my next appointment with the surgeon. But reading up on it, it seems that younger patients get the ceramic option, well i hope that's the case.

Hi, raducanmihai! Just saw the post about your MTB ride. Congrats! I appreciate your support for cabbageandbacon. I know going into my surgery I was desperate to find articles from people with THR who were biking and otherwise active.

Hello.I'm back with updates.
I've been busy the last week, because I helped a friend of mine to organize a MTB race in the city I live in. That meant setting up the race course (40 km/25 miles),cleaning the trails of dead trees and branches, building little bridges over water and ,of course, marking the race course with ribbons every 30-50-100 m (or more) depending on the situation. Also,in the race day,I took care of one (of the 2) food and drink station. It was a hard week but everything went perfect.
I also had a surprise today when I weighted myself. Now,I weigh 73 kg (160 lbs),so I lost another 3 kg (6.5 lbs).The total weight loss,from January, is 15 kg (33 lbs).
I told you that I decided to finish my studies,so on the 1st of October I will go to college (again:) ). I'm looking forward to it and I'll let you know how am I doing.

PS: I have a little problem to solve with Physical Education. I am not allowed to do any impact sports (running, jumping, playing team games-as they involve running, etc),so I will need a doctor signed proof that can confirm that and, probably, to pass through a University medical commission. I am not sure what the procedure is,but I'll have to find that out and take care of this matter.

The MTB race sounds like a very cool event. What fun! Congrats on the continuing weight loss. It's odd, never meeting someone, but wanting to celebrate accomplishments with them and stand alongside when things get rough. That's just to say that I was truly happy to hear about the event and to celebrate strength, activity and recovery with you.

Hello,it's been a long time since I posted here. I've been quite busy as I started college and I put all my energy in attending all classes. It sounds easy but it's not because I live in Predeal and the college is in Brasov (25km away) so I commute every day or even twice a day,for example when I have a long break (4-6 hours) between classes. Unfortunately I don't own a car (anymore) so I have to use the train or the bus.
Anyway,I am still nordic walking (on snow, with my dog named Speedy) and riding my (home made) bicycle roller. I am now in the 2 weeks winter holiday and I am getting ready for Christmas.

I want to wish you all Merry Christmas and a happy new year !!

Hi Mihai.. Great to hear from you.. Love the shoes on speedy.... Terrific that you are still NW.. Work keeps getting in my way.. :(

So, pleased the study is going well, you are doing it tough with the commute.. Is there anyway you could stay at the library between
classes ?

And yes, do we have a love interest.. Very attractive lady...

Lovely to hear from you :)

Merry Christmas !!!

To answer your question about staying in the library : yes,I could do that, but it is a little complicated. In Brasov there are two libraries : the county one (the biggest, with the largest collection of books and the college library, which is much smaller). Unfortunately,I can't get an ID for the city one, because they accept only residents of Brasov county (city of Brasov and the surrounding area). Even if Predeal, the city I live in, belongs to Brasov county,my legal residence (what it is written in my ID) is in Bucharest,so I can't enter the Brasov county library. Though,I can go (and I am going ,sometimes) to the college library. But,still,a 6 hours break is a long time and I often prefer to go home, eat something and take a nap and then go back.

Hi Mihai

Sounds complicated, but you have worked out the best solution.

We went for a NW along the ocean path today... It was magic.. 3-4 k seems to be my max before it starts to hurt my back (prolapsed discs). But I am happy just to be able to do that much.. I have a smile on my face the whole time breathing in the fresh sea air :)

Take care my friend and thank you so much for introducing me to Nordic walking, it is my passion :)

Take care xx

@raducanmihai wow what a great read! The volumes of stuff here on BoneSmart really is amazing. It's a full time occupation consuming it all.

Anyway I've found this story fascinating and very inspiring.

Coming up to my 4 week post op point in dreaming about getting back on my mountain bike and road bike.

I wasn't sure whether mountain biking was allowable post THR, but clearly it is.

One of my greatest depressions over the last 12 months was giving up the bike, I'm delighted to see I'll be back on it before I know it!

Yes, calling @raducanmihai - how are you my good friend, time for an update. How is the study? How are all your activities?

Hugs from OZ xx
