TKR Knee replacement PT question

Thanks all for your support and wisdom, again. This is my third surgery in ten months, third joint replacement, and it has been the hardest of all. More pain, more swelling, slower recovery. My rom is not great, but I am not letting myself be pushed this time. I went to PT on Friday, mainly to pick up a tens unit they said I could get thru insurance. Today I got the text reminding me of tomorrow's appt and so I called the number to cancel tomorrow's PT and all subsequent appts. Of course it was voicemail, but I am sure they will call me to try to talk me back into it. . Feels good to have cancelled....empowering.

I can't thank bonesmart enough for all the support and help. I have learned more here than from all my other PT and Dr visits.

Dr. was Fired!

Hi all, just an update. I had one Dr, for my first two surgeries TLKR and TRHR, was supposed to have third surgery with him on Sept. 14, 2015. I went thru all the preop stuff with his office anfpd had everything set up. Then, on Sept 04, I get a phone call from his office nurse saying they can no longer do the surgery at this time as Dr. has had his surgical priviledges suspended at hospital. There was no other alternative surgeon at the hospital, he was the only one there. So, they referred me to a different Dr. in Green Bay, WI. At first I was really upset, so close to surgery date and not only a different surgeon but a different Medical facility. I knew the routine with 1st Dr and 1st hospital, and my husband works at that hospital so it was home to me.

I found the new (bigger) hospital much improved in patient care and conveniences. They even let my husband bring our tiny dog up to visit me for a short time. The new Dr was kinder and gentler. He actually called me personally twice after my surgery to check on me. Not his nurse, the Dr. I must say I was pleased with the change in both Dr & hospital for third surgery once it was over. Before the surgery it was a major stress out with the change but it turned out well. Last week, I finally found out what happened with the first Dr---he was Fired from the hospital, as in persona none grata. He threw a scalpel at the wall during surgery and had a tantrum in a room full of surgical staff, so the hospital said, nope, we'll have none of that. Not surprised by this. As I said to my spouse, dr's personality finally caught up with him. He had a reputation among hospital staff and with patients as being a jerk. My husband's hospital hired a new ortho surgeon and has moved on without Dr. Grumpy. Interesting turn of events.

Scandalous! Even before I got to the reason for your first OS's firing, I thought to myself: meltdown in OR. Similar thing happened with a general surgeon at my hospital (where I work). He tried to kick then punch a scrub nurse- a sweet, tiny gal. He was restrained, then escorted off premises by security. Someone else had to step in and complete the operation for the patient on the table. The consensus was that Angry Surgeon had been drinking. We were on lockdown for weeks.

Obviously you are much better off. Sounds like you are having a good recovery, too. The first few months just plain are not fun.

I am a good example of someone who gained ROM well after that "so-called window of opportunity." With both my knee replacements I continued to slowly gain movement for a year or more. Today one knee has slightly more ROM than the other, but both are somewhere in the 130-135 range. I haven't had them measured in quite a while, so I'm not completely sure. But I can bend them back just about as far as my pudgy legs will allow .. :heehee:.

And the shoulder can freeze if there is no rom done.
That's what I always thought. I'm to have an acromioplasty some time soon and am not looking forward to it one little bit. Seen too many grown men sobbing like infants in recovery - big rugby playing types too!

oooh! I would love to have dealt with him!

I had a similar incident in my theatres when a surgeon threw a needle holder complete with needle at his scrub nurse. Had she not quickly moved, it would have hit her in the face! We didn't have much in the way of assault policies and such in those days but I did tear him off a strip and made him apologise to the nurse in front of everybody! Had it been nowadays, I would have called the police!

We had a surgeon like that when I was doing my training. He frequently used to rant at staff. On this day, he also threw a bloody swab at his scrub nurse. She was a tough cookie; she looked him in the eye and said "When my son has a tantrum like that, I send him to his room. I think you'd better leave until you feel calmer."
Surprisingly, he did leave and his senior house surgeon completed the operation.

While that particular surgeon continued to rant at other staff, he never did so again with that nurse.
