Bilateral THR Jwadds Recovery (2 hip to be square!)

Wow going to the gym. I can't imagine. I used to spend 3 hours a day in the gym when training--a distant memory of another life. One i would never have done (in hindsight). Are you walking with a cane? Do you have assistance at the gym?

Wow! 3 hours @mikeycat. Were you an athlete? That will bode well for you in recovery! I was the opposite of an athlete - couch potato. Wish I’d done more to look after myself.

I only use a cane when I’m out of the house (I’m freaked out about falling) and on stairs. It also helps me to walk normally without limping. I’ve heard that you have to retrain yourself to walk properly when you’ve limped for so many years, and that certainly has been true for me.

This will be my first time, it’s just our little gym in the apartment complex. It has a universal machine, weights, stationary bike, treadmill, etc. I’m just going to do bridging and the leg press to strengthen my quads. Will report back... will probably be packed in ice for the rest of the day.

I ran marathons now I hobble. I walked outside with the assistance of the PT she on my left and a cane on my right -the good side. I will be doing this daily with assistance of my husband. I managed a few steps without assistance in the house. Afraid of falling is a new theme with me. The retraining was what my own PT said I would have to do--to learn how to walk properly because as you I had years of limping and favoring. She said the proprieceptors are gone and it is a relearning process. Another question:my muscles seize--quads, hip, gluteus like steel and they won't give did you have this?

I had to google this, I didn’t know there was a medical term for it! Good to know. I’m convinced walking is the best therapy for hips, plus the weather is so lovely, it's nice to get outside. I’m using my Nordic walking poles for balance. take my phone as I'm afraid of falling and may need a lifeline... I wonder if/when confidence comes back?!

Ya everything was extremely stiff and sore at this stage, I imagine like running a marathon, but without any training.... (I've never ran a marathon, just the Sun Run... lol)

You are healing and the area has had a lot of trauma! be kind to yourself ❤️

I walked with a 2 wheeled walker at all times, in the house and out for 4 weeks post op. I felt very secure with it. I rented it (free) from the Red Cross. You just need a physio/doctors requisition.

That walker is the best. I bought mine at Sally Ann just at the corner and paid $4.50 new can u believe. Many things my husband found in a thrift shop. When I'm done with them will return there. Our CLSC which is a health community gov run funded place used to provide all the equipment free but now they just focus on all services to your home free.We pay a truckload of taxes.

Same here. I did cruise kitchen countertops a bit and the back of the sofa.
Amazed at No hip pain...it was my quads that gave me fits!

Me too. I walked alone without aid of anything cruising from counter to fridge but love the walker. I am stiff and muscles of steel wish they were more elastic.

Good morning @mikeycat, just got up at 10am! :alarm:
Didn't have a great night sleep last night. I've been thinking about getting a kitten through Tiny Kittens, and spent 3 hours watching them on their live kittycam, when I should've been sleeping....
I actually do gain more confidence every day. I went for a walk with my nordic poles and they're much better than the cane. Still struggling with stairs.

Oh I am a cat person having been raised with dogs. I had most of my cats from kittenhood-just wonderful. Walking with nordic poles I will think about that though my PT has me walking outside with just 1 cane.

I just started using the nordic poles last week (6) and you're not even week 3! I'm amazed you're outside walking with a cane! I used the 2 wheeled walker right up to week 4.

I have no choice but I was surprised at my strength. At the hospital 1 day post up I could stand on both legs and wasn't shaky a bit. I knew then what a superb job the OS had done though I did not like the lying part to get me there. Do you have stairs where you live? I have a lot and I firmly believe it is the memory of those stairs which instinctively had me raise my leg to the desired height. Of this I am sure because the first time I tried the outside front stairs(real doozies) I lifted my leg much higher than what was needed to clear the stairs. Strangely enough when prompted to raise my legs -say- while clinging to the counter in the house I could barely raise them.

@jwadds Your confidence will grow day by day and pretty soon you'll start to forget you have man made hips! At my 8 week post op (which was actually at 9 or 10 weeks I think because of holiday schedules) I walked into surgeon's exam room carrying my cane over my shoulder like a rifle :heehee: Nurse accused me of showing off and I just grinned and said "YUP". But the big moment for me came at about 3 months post op - I had 2 BIG kitties (Maine Coon girls - one was 22lbs and the other was 18lbs - and both were over 4' long from nose to tail tip). They were due for a grooming session and I had to get them crated for the trip to the groomers. Caught the smaller one easily but then sister knew a trip in the dreaded car was afoot and took off running. Chased her upstairs, saw her duck under the guest room bed, had to close door, get on my stomach, haul her protesting floofy-ness out from under the bed, stand up holding on to protesting feline, and carry her down my twisty stairs to get to her crate. As I got her stuffed in I realized I'd done ALL of that without once thinking of the new hips and had done alternating feet up and down the stairs also without thinking about it. I had to sit down for a moment and laugh. :catdance: :rotfl: :catdance:

Nordic poles I've heard are wonderful! I preferred crutches myself over walker - my house has oriental rugs over hardwood floors and I found lifting the walker over the edges of the rugs a nuisance. Crutches worked better for e until I "graduated" to just a cane.

I love the maine coon stories. I always wanted them. I was not allowed to have any rugs on the floor. Someone came here prior to surgery(done for everyone) and says what you need and what needs to be done-so all the rugs rolled up. But that was amazing. jwadds you will be tripping the night fantastic.
