Hi @Mojo333 and @Layla and @dougie0216
Yes I am still floating around in the background every now and then, I always read your guy’s posts, glad to see you all lurking around here, as we will always be connected by this crazy surgical repair! I was planning on giving my six-month progress report in January on the sixth... so far life is good, the boyfriend I was sure would leave me throughout all this has asked me to marry him :-) There is life after hip replacement!

Yahoo!! Wonderful news and great to hear from you.
Congrats on the proposal.....so happy for you!
I remember pre-op how you were worried about his nursing skills. Well you made it through, in a big way.
And now you'll be a bride, how exciting! Can't wait to read your update in January.
Warm wishes for a great holiday weekend and a happy healthy 2018 as some lucky guy's little Mrs. :loveshwr:

Happy New Year !:yahoo:

Well it has been full 6 months! Once again, most days I never even think about my surgery and the horrible year I had leading up to it. Here in Vermont it has been brutally cold so I have not been skiing yet, but it is on my list.

I can lift, move, balance on either leg, and do just about anything I want to. ( I am not supposed to run or jump)

Lingering effects that I have:

My incisions are still tender in an odd way, I catch myself massaging them frequently. I think they are still healing from deep inside. Sometimes they itch.

Periodically my hip(s) will feel a clunk, nothing too bad, but a clunk.

On my left side on the outside of my thigh, I still have what I call my donkey kick. A spot about 3 inches by 3 inches that feels like a deep bruise, I think it is the nerves waking up but it doesn't change much, and if the boyfriend accidentally pokes it, it sends me thru the ceiling and beyond. He thinks I'm being a drama queen but it is real and I guess if that is my lingering effect from this surgery I can deal with it lol. Maybe @Josephine has some insight as to what it might be. I worry about it being a blood clot, but not enough to go have it checked out. At 6 months is a bloodclot even a possibility?

I am still not graceful about getting up off the floor. I try to do squatting exercises and I am getting better at it. If I climb up my hay loft ladder and roll on the hard floor to stand up, either side is painful to roll against the hard floor, kind of right at the joint. I am hoping that will get better, (I have plenty of padding that I am trying to lose) I do think things are still healing in there.

My energy level is getting better and legs are getting stronger, they never get tired, but after a day of busy bartending I am wiped out energy wise. Usually I am good for nothing the next day. Thank goodness I semi-retired and only work one day per week. If this surgery has taught me one thing it is that life is short, and I have worked hard all of mine, so I think I have earned it to take things a bit easier.

I still feel like I had an amazing recovery, and feel fortunate every day that I was able to be repaired, as my worst fear pre-surgery was that I would never be the same, or feel quite the same. But I do.

I miss running, ( I was told by my OS not to) I used to be able to run 6+ miles easily and It kept me very fit. But when this weather breaks I plan on walking alot, maybe sneaking in a walk/run but I do not want to wear out these new joints, cycling is no prob as is horseback riding which I will do plenty of this summer. One goal is to be able to mount up from the ground instead of using a mounting block. More yoga stretches I think. I am trying to strengthen on stairs up and down without using the railing, a hard habit to break.

I have been in control of my own PT for quite some time. I do believe healing from this will take at least a full year... My OS didn't want to see me unless there was a problem for a full year, I think the last time I saw him was at my 6 week checkup... so if the next 6 months goes as well as the first 6 I look forward getting stronger and stronger.

Wishing everybody a great 2018! If you are contemplating this surgery, don't put it off like I did! Do it! Find yourself a great surgical team and just do it! And if you are post surgery I wish you the best and a fast recovery!

Hey lady, great update. Hopefully Jo can clue you in on donkey kick. I can relate to all else described especially rolling or laying on hard surface with these metal hips.
Long days really wiped me out, especially at 6 months, but it continues to get better...I'm at 8 months now. I also am super proud about the results of BTHR and still have some self imposed restrictions as I don't want to do it again!!
I tipped a 600 lb ATV over and jumped up in fright...hips OK? Yep, hips OK.
Took me an hour to realize I put the handlebar into my thigh, skinned my knee, roadrashed my shin, and bruised my elbows.
Hips OK.
It did however sober me up for being careless...
We are going to have a super year.
Come on spring!
Glad you are doing well...still minor issues for me too, but definitely worth getting rid of that miserable hip pain!
Best to you, bilateral pal.:loveshwr:

Great update @gaulsuerou. Agree full recovery can take a year (maybe even more). It is nice to get back to normal activities. Not putting this surgery off is good advice I put my left off way too long. As soon as right started showing symptoms I talked to doc and was assured I didn’t need to wait for full collapse and 24/7 pain so I am not.

Keep doing well.

My incisions are still tender in an odd way, I catch myself massaging them frequently.
Then stop massaging them!
Periodically my hip(s) will feel a clunk, nothing too bad, but a clunk.
That happens. It should settle in due course.
I have been in control of my own PT for quite some time.
Did you forget our number one guideline for hips?

Hips actually don't need any exercise to get better. They do a pretty good job of it all on their own if given half a chance. Trouble is, people don't give them a chance and end up with all sorts of aches and pains and sore spots. All they need is the best therapy which is walking and even then not to excess.

On my left side on the outside of my thigh, I still have what I call my donkey kick. A spot about 3 inches by 3 inches that feels like a deep bruise
I have a feeling I know what that is but to be sure, can you identify the spot using the chart?

:goodpost:
You never cease to amaze me. Six months post op and look how
your life has changed. It's wonderful you're retired, only working one day per week.
It gives you time to stop and smell the roses. This surgery is so life changing
putting much back into proper perspective. I know you feel the same, Gail.
I believe it was Dougie who's doc said complete healing can take up to two yrs or longer.
I'd say you're well on your way. 2018 is going to be great!! Hugs to you :friends:

And thanks for the vote of confidence @Mojo333 , and I read your story of your ATV mishap... you be careful! & thanks for your kind words @Layla & @MammaT Good luck with your upcoming surgery! And a big hello to @dougie0216, & @Constanze & @GrannyC & @MyAussieGirl
And anyone I may have missed, you were all my inspiration to get me through this!

do you think I should make an appointment with my OS, or do you think I should just live with it and it may or may not get better or worse?
I've had TB three times. Twice in the right hip and once in the left. The right was worse and had cortisone injection both times which was very effective. But the left wasn't quite so bad and my chiropractor did a little work on it and it settled down. The worst of them was not being able to lay on my side in bed!

I have what is classic hallmark of trochanteric bursitis in my THR side. I think it is aggravated by gimping on my right, soon to be replaced hip. Will talk to OS at pre-op visit to see if we do anything before surgery or wait and see how it behaves afterwards.

Meanwhile, ice and anti-inflammatory do help. Hope you get some relief @gaulsuerou.
