I am now seven weeks out from LTKR and am doing well. I saw my surgeon last week and he said I was making good progress and the X-rays look great. I will be starting outpatient PT next week. The question that I have is this: my primary care physician wants me to get a colonoscopy as part of my upcoming physical. I did not fare well with the last one, and was in a lot of pain throughout. After having the TKR , I just feel that it's too soon for anything else. I am tired, worn out, and still trying to find my happy place. Any thoughts?

Might be worth asking your OS. My OS would say absolutely no on the colonoscopy, he treats them the same as invasive dental work and says the risk of infection is too great in the first 12 weeks, and he'd prefer if I didn't do one for six months to a year.

It would depend if you have had any issues with previous colonoscopies as far as polyps, etc..otherwise may not hurt to wait a little while but they are very important...I am 5 months out today and have postponed having my teeth cleaned until tomorrow and have been asked to take a massive amount of antibiotic 1 hour before...every OS has a slightly different protocol...you should not have any pain with a colonoscopy it is usually just a little versed to put you in a twilight state wake up and go to lunch.....

I agree with Vinny re making a decision based on previous colonoscopies. I'd speak to your colo people and your OS

Well, tomorrow will be the eleven week mark out of left TKR. Things are going great! I have been going to outpatient PT one to two times per week. While there, I ride the stationary bike a little, use a pulley with small weights, stretch on an incline, and get the kinks worked out by the PT.
I can go up and downstairs without the cane, as long as I hold onto the railing for balance. I still take baby steps going down, but walk "like an adult" going upstairs. I walk in the neighborhood everyday at least a half a mile. I only use my cane in the store to keep people from knocking me over. It's feels so good to walk without pain! So happy I had the surgery!

That's good stuff! I'm six days ahead of you and I'm still not going up stairs very well, feels like my quad is still weak... But I'll get there, we February TKR folks are tough! :heehee:

Is my scar infected? All of a sudden it burns like crazy! It feels like a really bad burn, and the scar directly over the knee cap has stretched wider and is so red. It is not any more hot to the touch than usual, nor is the surrounding tissue. No other unusual pain, just the real bad burning. I put lotion on it twice a day. I even tried Neosporin with pain killer. Any ideas? I am eleven plus weeks out from TKR.

It could be your healing nerves acting up as they heal. Give your OS a call and let them know what is happening, they may be able to give you medication to help with the pain.

Thank you, Pumpkin. They are closed now, and won't provide a prescription after hours. However, I have PT first thing in the a.m. and will ask him. I will call the surgeon's office if the pain gets too bad. I just was worried about infection.

thank you for your recovery thead,, it lets me know what to expect in the future

It turns out that I have been massaging my scar the wrong way. I was massaging it up and down, when I should have been massaging it side to side, thus stretching it. It is doing much better now.

I had TKR on February 23, 2015, and it's amazing what I can do now. I "graduated" from PT last week, after going twice a week. I was pedaling on the bike for about two miles in ten minutes time. They had me doing weights, balancing, stretches, etc. A great program. I can now walk up and down the stairs without problem, walk several miles a day, and am pain free. The swelling is gone. The scar is still there, but is fading. There is a minor issue with numbness on the skin on the outside of my knee, but the area is getting smaller. If I overdo it, the outside edge of my knee will ache a little. I take no pain Meds. I can squat, hop a little, garden, carry things upstairs. If something is really heavy, I'll use the stairs, and put the box down, then put it up a few stairs at a time. It feels great to be able to walk pain free and limp free!

Hi @Newone15 -- how wonderful for you, it is so thrilling to read that you are enjoying a pain and limb free life - well done :(

That's a wonderful report!!! I'm so happy for you.

@Newone15 ... by the way, I merged this latest post into your original recovery thread. You've had such a great outcome, your good news needs to be part of your recovery journey so folks will easily be able to read how well things turned out for you.

I am also happy for you---a good recovery is the best end to a tkr.

Great report!

I am exactly a month behind and am doing well so far too. Mostly afraid to overdo and then be reluctant to take it easy after.

Wow great report. I had one on Dec. but had to have revision.
But each Day is easier. I love the bike. Xxxx keep up good work.
