Hello Mate! Good tonsee you not giving up. The biggest message on this forum is not to give up, then not to be impatient and then to do the right things the right way at the right time. Seems like you are doing good. Keep it up!

WOW That is so great. Keep going there freedom coming. Do take care.

OK folks, here is my update @ one year out.
Lets start by saying that I am a fairly active person (not like I was 20 years ago but still keep busy). After a whirlwind tour of Italy this summer where we walked and walked, I came home and got back into the routine of living. I volunteer work @ Habitat for Humanity and have taken the job of site supervisor, working 15 - 20 hours a week on a construction site. We are building two houses at the moment and I try to maintain a supervisory roll but just last week I found myself climbing in the roof rafters to get tarps over them because we were expecting snow. Up and down ladders is no problem but by the end of a 6 hour day my knees are tired. Also took a temp job framing a house that had been destroyed by Sandy Storm last year.

I got back to sailing all summer and was a "jib and kite trimmer" on a 40 ft. boat that we sail in the Sandy Hook Bay. Except for the day when I slipped on a rope while tacking in high winds and got a bone contusion on my hip, it was a fun time with no pain in the knee. I did find that I had to wear knee pads because of leaning on the side of the cockpit when the boat was healed over.

Although I am pretty much doing what I was pre-op, I still have about the same amount of knee pain as I did before the TKR. I had hoped that after all that I have gone through in the last year that I would be pain free. After-all thats why we all get this procedure, to be pain free and increase our mobility. I know everyone is different but I guess that I'll just have to wait and hope that it gets better.

ICEGuy is your knee pain the same type of pain that existed pre surgery? Does it back off if you rest it?

Well, another update. Saw my OP 3 weeks ago and talked about the pains I'm having. He claims that it's all "Soft Tissue" and that the x-rays show everything is OK with the knee joint. Suggested I go back to PT. Then I went for my annual physical at the GP's and we discussed the knees. He says to keep after the OP if things don't get better. He has many patients who have had TKR and they are pain free.

On another note….I officiated my first wrestling match since surgery and it was like old times. I wore knee pads and had no problems getting up and down on the mat. After 24 years of officiating it like riding a bike again!

Well, I"m now 18 months out from my first TKR and I'm in as much pain as before the operation. This is not "soft tissue" related! The pain is pretty much the same as before the replacement. It's starting to slow me down again and I feel that the whole procedure was for naught. I'm thinking of going to see another OP for a second opinion on what is going wrong. The second knee for TKR is having no problems. Sometimes I wonder if the fact that they straightened out the first leg when they cut the bone is having any effect on the joint now. Has anyone had any similar experience with leg straightening?

@iceguy sorry you are feeling this pain. I am new to this having just got LTKR 2 weeks ago. I just wanted to wish you all the best and hope that you find answers soon.

Yes, you need a second opinion. Why not the Hospital for Special Surgery NYC? Not far from you.

Well, I'm 19 months out from surgery and I have more pain than before the operations. I have finally made an appointment with another OS in two weeks. The pain is in exactly the same place as it was before the operations. I know there is some tendonitis in other areas of the knee but this is at the top of the femur on both legs, one inside and one outside, exactly where I was bone on bone before the procedures.

If I don't get some positive information from this OS who is a local one and had good creeds, then I'm heading to NYC to the Special Surgery Hospital. This has drug on far too long.

Who are you seeing? Was going to NYC HSS but people I know weren't satisfied there and others that were so I decided to start locally and found a good OS. I used Summit Medical Group and had surgery at Overlook. I hope you get a good workup and the new OS helps.

iceguy,
Sorry to hear you are still having trouble with your knees.
Glad to hear you are seeking second opinions about your knee. A revision specialist is the best to determine why you are still having pain in your knees. Recommend you see more than one revision specialist.

Wishing you well, iceguy. What a tough row you have had to hoe. Am very happy with HSS - two weeks past surgery (right TKR). My surgeon is Dr Charles Cornell. Took the ferry across Sandy Hook Bay and up to the city on day of the surgery. Sure hope you find some relief and a new direction.

Sibbi,

I'm going to Summit Medical seeing Dr. Bullock. I had seen him 3 yrs. ago for injections but they had no effect at the time. Used Reconstructive Orthopedics in Vorhees NJ for the surgery.
Thought everything was good but started having more and more issues 4 months ago.

There are excellent surgeons at HHS in New York. Just do be sure you see someone who does a lot of revision knees. I'm not saying you need a revision....it's just that these guys are more skilled at diagnosing problems with a TKR. If you need help locating a surgoen, let me know. Be sure and tag me (use an "at" sign - @ - right before my username with no space) with any questions and I'll be sure to see your post much quicker.

I am four weeks post op (LTKR), and doing well. I credit the advice from this forum and the skills of Dr Charles Cornell and his team at HHS. If you have a chance to consider HHS, please give it some thought. Best of luck!

Hi @iceguy, I do agree with Jamie. I had my surgery done at NY Hospital for special surgery and I would not go anywhere else. They have loads of doctors there who take various insurances. I was/am very pleased with my OS. I was having pain after my 6 months check up and went back to my OS and he ordered PT. The first day I restarted PT, I felt better afterwards. As per one of the physical therapist, I have to do exercises for the rest of my life. I have RA which does complicate things and causes pain and stiffness all over my body. My knee does hurt, ache, and feels sore at times and I do have to take pain meds for both achy knee and RA, but I do not have pain like I had before the surgery. Then there are times that I don't remember that I even had a knee replacement done like a few days ago. Hopefully you will get to that point soon.

@iceguy i just read your thread. So sorry to hear about the setbacks. If im correct, its just 1 knee giving you the trouble. Hopefully a specialist can figure it out. Its so unfortunate. You seem like a great guy, volunteering and all. Keep us posted. Iceman

Well, I went to see a new OS last week. After X-rays and a hands on exam, he told me that the left knee is "Unstable" . I kinda knew this going in but he showed me where there is a difference in the gap when under stress and is laterally loose. He said that a tendon should have been "relieved"? He'll tell me next week if I need a revision. Meanwhile, the right knee is in much more pain than the left and he says that the unstableness of the left may be causing the pain in the right. Also checking for infection with a blood test.

Has anyone had any experience with "relieving of the tendon" that can give me an idea what I'm in for in the future?

Thanks,

Wayne
