TKR Introduction and quick question

Hi everyone,

I've not posted for a while, I have been lurking and I'm still cheering everyone on from the sidelines though! It's true what everyone says and that as your knee improves you use this site less and less.

I just thought I would post and hopefully give some of you newbies out there hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

I have just come back from a lovely walk on the fields, in the thick snow that we still have in our corner of the world, with my two dogs and using my YakTrax lookalikes, which I bought from QVC, and I can't recommend them enough, they are totally unslippable and give you such confidence. Definitely one of my better buys! Both of my knees enjoyed the walk as much as the dogs and I am thrilled how well they stood up to the uneven ground and the length of time we were out.

My other piece of good news is that I am going back to work. I used to be a nurse but gave it up when we moved to Germany for a few years and this coincided with my knees starting to give me major trouble so I would have had to leave anyway. I am starting work as a Passenger Assistant for the council, just on a casual basis, but I'm really looking forward to it, so wish me luck for next week!

Hi srn
I've been following your story, and I am thrilled that you have had such a wonderful result!
I just want to ask you a question.
What is a Passenger Assistant for the council????

Hi Trainwreck

A Passenger Assistant helps vulnerable/disabled people on journeys to schools, day centres, hospitals etc and I am employed by our local council.

I have followed your story as well and pray that you will be sorted soon.

You've really done well and the best of luck for next week, srn!

I am going back to work too - I haven't worked since last September; it's the longest break I've had since my children were small.

Let's hope our new knees enjoy the new (to them) world of work.

Yes, I'm really looking forward to getting back into the world of work, not particularly for the money, but I've been in a caring profession all of my life and really miss it. As I said it's only casual but it will be great.

What do you do Deeden?

Congratulations to you SRN, how wonderful that you are living your life and enjoying it so much :yes 4:. I have missed your posts as you have always been so helpful with your advice and knowledgeable. Wishing you loads of luck for next week with your job :thumb:

Hi SRN, what a great job. I know what you mean about being out there helping people. As an accountant I worked for aged care facilities for 9 years until a few years ago when we moved town. I do miss doing something that helps others.

These knees are queer things. My new TKR has steadily been improving, swelling going down, no pain, no heat, good ROM, but it does feel tight by the evening. My old TKR is great, it does feel tight if I am really busy or do something new and ambitious but on the whole I don't think about it very much.

BUT... yesterday I woke up and I would have sworn that I had two 'natural' knees, they felt so normal, free moving, almost lubricated, if you can understand what I mean, I felt I could run and jump if I wanted to. They stayed like this all day, I had a normal day, lived my life as usual, went to bed and this morning they are back to normal, not the 'super knees' I had yesterday.

Anyone else had this? Maybe it's a taste of the future.

That basically was how it was for me---my knees would tighten up by the end of the day---and then, one day---I didn't even notice it until it was too late---it was back to normal!

Congrats on taking another tremendous step toward living a great lifestyle!

back to normal!

Here's hoping for that!

I work in IT (in answer to your earlier question, srn) and this is my second week back although in a new job. Work and knee have been fine although I've had a few other problems - my son is muttering about IT bands and ominously, he speaks of a foam roller which hurts.

This is a foreign language to me (IT = computers and stuff) but hurts is not a good word! Well, it's hurting already so I don't need anything more self-inflicted. So I'm hoping it will settle.

How is your new job going? And do you think you might go back to nursing, now you have superknees?

Hi Deeden,

My job is going great. It's only casual work but I am getting a couple of days work a week, which is just what I want. Unbelievably the passenger assistant I shadowed for a day was someone that I was in Saudi Arabia with when our children were small and haven't seen for years. What a small world and it was lovely to catch up with each other.

I won't go back to nursing. My registration lapsed while we were in Germany and this coincided with my the start of my knee problems. I loved nursing, it was my life, but it has changed so much and not always for the better.

I do hope you get your IT bands sorted, I didn't know very much about all of these ligaments and muscles until I started reading this forum, my nursing speciality was cardiology, which is a lot more straightforward than knees!

Are you enjoying being back at work?

Wonderful to hear how well you are doing, thanks for the update!

I am very glad to read of how well the job is going and how much you enjoy it---I have often said that "work is what defines us."

You are well on your way and reclaiming your life as well as our activities---both in hobbies and in your career!

Keep coming back with more great news!

Hi Srn,

Well today was the end of the second week back at work for me, and apart from the knee problems it has been great to re-join the human race! I feel much more myself.

My knee has been a bit better today; just the usual stiffness and aching - the sharp pains in hip and calf have gone so hopefully the IT bands are doing whatever it is IT bands do again.

Working a couple of days a week sounds like the perfect combination to me; I'm very envious!

Hi everyone,

I've not posted for ages and was looking through the forum for the first time in quite a while and thought I would update.

It's now just over 6 months since my second TKR and 3 years since my first TKR.

I don't think there is anything that I want to do that I can't do. Both knees are great, over 130 flexion in both knees and 0 extension in both. No pain in either knee but both knees still swell a bit, left more than right, when I have a particularly busy day. I'm happy to live with that, considering everything that is positive with my knees.

My 6 month check with my consultant was great and I would have been discharged if it were not for the fact my right knee (my 3year old knee), was still a bit sore, which started 4 weeks after having my second knee replaced. But would you believe it this soreness disappeared a couple of days after seeing him! I think it was all in my mind! No reason was ever found for the soreness except maybe extra work and different gait.

My new job is going great and I love it. I'm still getting a couple of days work a week most weeks and this enough for me.

I have joined a gym and am enjoying it, I'm mostly swimming and doing aquafit which is a great laugh, I have found that I have absolutely no coordination, but I suppose I still get some kind of workout. I find the gym machines too boring, I would much rather walk my dogs for other exercise.
The dogs are enjoying their twice a day walks, I have bought a step counter and am up to about 8000 steps a day, not quite the recommended 10000, but I honestly can't fit any more in!

So all in all everything is going well. I'm so pleased with my new knees, as I have said before, they are not the same knees that I had when I was 25, but they are good, strong, painfree and have given me my life back - who could ask for more?

Hang on in there Newbies, you'll get there!

Just read through your complete thread with great interest! It's wonderful to read such success stories and know I will get there too. Thank you for sharing, it's so helpful to those of us us who are still on the road to that "normal life".

Hi SRN
Lovely to see you back and I thoroughly enjoyed reading your report. I'm so pleased for you that all is going so well with your knees. I am looking forward to getting to the point you are at and would love to think I could get your ROM figure by 6 months. Great report :thumb:

What a sterling report!!! It made me smile to know that you are doing so well. I think all of us have some degree of swelling and/or pain when we push a bit hard. But then...that happens with natural knees too!
