TKR Infection

@Janette , and @busylizzie ,

I know what it feels like to be on the strong antibotics! One of the things my IS told me was to take probiotics 3 hours after the antibotics to help keep the body in balance. He also advised yogurt, and I eat Greek yogurt everyday!:happydance: I cannot remember the last time I had a cold or the flu; I got pneumonia last year but it was taken care of quickly.

I used to have pneumonia that would land me in the hospital for 7 days! Not anymore. My body is much healthier now!:loveshwr:

Talk to your doctor about probiotics and yogurt if they haven't mentioned them. Life just keeps getting better!:yes!:

I used to do a lot of Sudoku as a way of pain management keeping my mind occupied so I didn't think about the pain. However , whilst on on these antibiotics I find it hard to do. I just can't seem to get them right. I have used this method with all my other surgeries OK. I'm also having trouble remembering things, I'm OK for a few hours, then its gone. I remember that I have something to remember but I can't remember what. It is not the pain meds as I'm virtually off them, as they too interfere with one of my antibiotics as do some of my other drugs. I have a very high pain threshold which helps. The Rifampicin certainly is knocking me sidewards, it colours all the body fluids dark orangery red. It even affects my sweat and the condition of my hair. My skin feels as if it is coated with something, no matter how much I shower and wash. Are you on this one @Janette? It is the Teicoplanin that makes me agitated, that is the one I have to have by IV. I am on pretty high doses of both according to the Microbiologist. They monitor my bloods twice a week and check my Teicoplanin level once a week. My platelet levels are dropping as are my white blood cells and iron level. They aren't low enough to cause concern yet. If they are, they will have to reduce or even stop the antibiotics.

Skigirl is right, take all the help and company you are offered so long as it doesn't wear you out. It does lift your spirit and makes the time appear to pass quicker. From what you said in your first post you are on two different oral and two different IV antibiotics that must be really hard on your body. Do you take them at the same time or are the doses staggered?

Take care

I'm on the pill that makes everything orange plus Bactrim and two IV antibiotics. White blood just dropped to 1.6 so they might have to cut back. I am just afraid they are prolonging the dreaded removal of the implant. Dr cleaned it but after all this if he has to go back in I don't know what I'll do. Today I was sleeping having such a nice dream of being at a party

They did there were two types of bacteria found on the skin whatever that means. They are being sketchy about some things because it was caused at the hospital when the original TKR was done.

@Janette, they choose the most appropriate antibiotics depending on the bacteria cultured. Is it the surgeon that is being sketchy? You can always ask for copies of your notes if you are worried.

@RestAssured may know better than me about cleaning the wound out

Take care

I have no wisdom to offer, just wanted you to know I'm thinking of you and wishing you the best. I hope the infection clears soon.

Well, I am on Bactrim as a maintaince drug, for who knows how long? Staph Aureus is found on the skin, as well as MRSA. I am so glad that you didn't mention the word "fungus!":scare:

What worries me about your case is the length of time your knee was infected before they did the washout and debridement. Please find a specialist that has no affiliation w your doctor, or IS and get a second opinion. Mine was "only" infected a little less than three weeks. The amount of fluid, the need to pack it, all are pointing toward a possible revision. No matter how well he scrubbed, if one little "beastie" stayed on the metal, antibiotics won't touch it. I am not trying to scare you; I simply want you to be ready to find a good revisionist in another hospital.:console2:

You are getting great advice from Restassured and Busylizzie who have walked a similar path.
Just wanted to stop by and say HI, and sending you good wishes.
Hope the party in your dream was fun.

I agree, I hope you listen to Rest Assured---she is our resident expert on Infection. where do you live? Do you need help finding a revisionist or an Infection control specialist?

Did they put you on oral erythromycin? The two IV antibotics, since you are at home, I know one of them can't be Zyvoxx. Are you on Daptomycin, or Vancomycin? Look at the iv bags and it will tell you. This will give me more of an idea of what type of infection they are trying to treat.

Janette,
Just read your story and all of the helpful replies. Simply reading the comforting words will help. I had a RTKR on May 19th and developed cellulitis 8-10 days later after my body rejected a blood transfusion. I don't know where I picked up the infection because I ended up in three different hospitals, two on an emergency basis. At the Cleveland Clinic I received a PICC line which dripped antibiotics into my systems for 10-14 days and then I went on oral antibiotics for another 10-14 days. Seven weeks after surgery, I still have swelling, redness, shooting pain, I cannot sleep, etc., but I can feel progress underway. I despair at times, but I find this forum - the people who make it up actually - quite comforting. I'll pray for you.That's what I can do for you. Feel the prayers. Look up. Brighter days are ahead.

Janette,

I'm so sorry you are going through this. My mother had a similar problem many, many years ago. I don't have the details, but she got through it. I will keep you in my prayers.

BTW, ask your doc about taking some probiotics since you're getting pumped up with all the antibiotics right now.

@Highpointer42 with all the extra trauma, your recovery is just delayed a little. If you were four weeks out, you would expect sleeplessness, pain and depresseion since they are all part of this recovery. I am sorry that you had to go through so much, but am happy that you are beginning to move forward. Be easy on yourself, you will get rom, you will recover. Kelly

@Janette ,

I went back and reread your first post. The hopelessness, the feeling of will this end, and the other stuff that you are going through are normal!:console2:

Your body was already tired from surgery, when "wham" your knee got slammed with an infection!:thud:

It is enough to drive a person into a deep depression with all the extra pain they experience, not to mention the stress of an unexpected surgery!:scare:

Your body has been through so much lately and now it is time to treat it with tender loving care. The road ahead may be longer, but we promise we will be here every step of the way!

I had so much support when I was going through my depression over the infection in my knee. But, not once did I ever feel alone! People on BoneSmart came to my rescue every time I needed them!:happydance:

Pumpkin, you can add me to the infection (cellulitis) list. Struggled with it and the antibiotics for about a month. Prayers are with Janette.

@JEANETTE
Hope you do better. I am on the pills that turns everything orange, IV Zostyn, and IV Vancomycin. My OS replaced my knee, but said that MRSA was found in the deeper tissues of my knee. I will be on antibiotics very long term and there I'd always a danger of the infection growing.
This process will be long and stressful, but you can only take one day at a time. Keep asking questions, read all the articles here, and put yourself first for awhile while you go through this. Sending wishes your way for a smooth recovery.:-)

I just got anti anxiety pill from the dr I'm just not quick enough to take it before I go one of my crying sessions.
Honey, you need to take that regularly and not just when you feel weepy.

And listen to Sonja, she's dead right about the probiotic yoghurt drinks. I had a really serious bout of cellulitis, lasted 4 months and my gut was a mess. But those little drinks made a heap of difference.
