THR Incision scar tissue

4.5 months out and I am in pain the last 3 weeks after starting on my new peloton machine! It's quite a 30min workout and I am really stiff the next day. Doing it 3 times a week. Passed beginner level. Stretching but not helping much. Limping and hard to stand on one leg. Before this i as strong and symptom free. Should I stop or just stretch more? Interestingly i looked back at my posts from my first hip and I encountered problems identical to this at the same 4 month mark.

Happy Three Month Anniversary!
I hope you continue to enjoy steady progress. We’d love to hear from you if you care to share an update.
Best Wishes moving forward. :)

Good evening,
I read the following on a sign a couple years back -
“Pain Is Your Body Asking For Change”

Since you noticed the pain after you began the workouts, consider stepping back from exercising until the pain is gone...then proceed s-l-o-w-l-y. Gradually building in time and intensity, allowing your body to be your guide. You could also go back to icing any / all areas of pain and discomfort and use OTC pain relievers as needed until the pain is gone.
This is what I would do...
Wishing you comfort and speedy relief.

Should I stop or just stretch more?
Stop! Your hip is telling you exactly what to do. You are not in training, you are healing. Stop and let all this settle. Then start again and gradually build up your level of activity. Four and a half months in what can be a 12+ month process is still early days.

@Richardp6 ugh. I had exactly the same thing with my first hip. I was doing fine, or so I thought, as we lived in a one-story house in a geographically flat area. At four months out, Off we go on vacation to where we always go. Lots of happy vacation walking anticipated, and as I'd been climbing stairs at church well, I was looking forward to the numerous flights in the vacation house. Well. I tripped lightly upstairs to the bedroom floor, and that was all she wrote. Flexor pain, need ice, much discouragement. I spent 10 days doing the stairs toddler style, and never walking more than half a mile from the house, because a mile had suddenly become where I hit the pain wall. Learned my lesson for sure! So, my vote is, stop now. Ice, elevate, let things calm down, and start from scratch more slowly. Your future self thanks you!

@Richardp6 .... I hope that by now you've figured out the pain you're experiencing is likely directly related to your use of your new Pelaton. Please remember that the bike's exercise progress is not geared toward someone who is recovering from hip replacement surgery. It's for healthy, well and fully functional individuals. At 4 1/2 months, you are still recovering. Although things may look good on the outside, there is healing going on inside that you need to be appreciative of and not try to get yourself back to your old levels of physical activity just yet. If you push yourself like you're doing, you risk developing chronic pain issues.

There is nothing wrong with using the Pelaton as a regular exercise bike for now once you have slowed down to the point that your current pain has diminished. That means no resistance, short rides that start at 10 minutes and increase 5 minutes every 3 days as long as there is no pain or swelling that develops afterwards. If you get pain, it's your body saying it's not ready for that level of activity quite yet. That would be your signal to stop, rest until the pain improves and then start again. You can work up to a maximum of 30 minutes daily.

Assuming you maintain a program like this plus some walking, it may be possible to begin strength training at 6 months out from your surgery. But, if you do, listen to your body and respond accordingly with any pain. Full recovery is around a year and it's possible that you might not be ready to start the actual Pelaton exercise program until then. Please don't risk putting yourself into chronic hip pain. That is a condition that can be difficult and sometimes impossible to reverse.

Please don't try to equate this recovery with your previous hip. Each surgery is different. Even though you recall that you started having pain with your last hip at the 4 month period, it was probably more related to you starting back into increased activity than anything else. It is not normal to go along just great and then start having significant pain after several months. That is an indication that your body is not ready for whatever it is you're doing that's resulting in the pain.

updating you all after several months, I've been in constant sciatica pain since May. I did stop the Pelaton immediately but the pain progressed and I got an MRI. it showed a synovial cyst on my spine at L4/L5 which I had drained. Two doctors have said it was not brought on by Pelaton. I think I disagree with them. I had instant relief for 6 weeks and it started to gradually have the pain return. The sciatica is excruciating when I drive my car, walk etc. Now seeing a pain specialist with epidural injections that are not helping. The cyst hasn't reinflated so I am desperate for a diagnosis and solution. I've returned to wondering if the hip replacement is a contributing factor but I went back to my surgeon and the xrays were perfect. The pain place gave me opiods which i try to take sparingly but some days its the only relief when my tylenol/alleve cocktail doesn't work. Anyway, not sure my issue is replacement related but interested if my story rings any bells with anyone. Very disappointed that after both hip replacements, i still can't put on my socks without agony! LOL

@Richardp6 Sorry you are suffering from sciatic pain. As you can see from my signature, I had spinal decompression for sciatic pain. Wouldn't wish it on anyone!

I doubt very seriously this is the case. But as you can see in this article, the sciatic nerve runs very near the hip joint. Sciatic nerve pain

Are you seeing a spinal specialist?

Thought i would return to finish the story on my sciatica pain. It ended well! We to spine and pain specialist, got diagnosed with spinal stenosis l4,l5 and took two rounds of steroid injections. Didn't help but a month later, i switched to ibuprofen and within 2 days, the pain began to diminish until it was completely gone and still is since January. So, it there was a hip replacement connection, noone attributes my sciatica to it or the Pelaton. Whether the Ibuprofen was a coincidence as well is a mystery but i am still taking it cause I never want to go back to that back pain again! Part of me thinks the THR readjusted my spine from what it was used to and pinched the nerve. Anyway, I'll take it. I guess it proves what a lot of the advice on this forum says- give it all time and don't get down about every setback!

Oh, so happy to hear you got some relief and your hip situation is still Hip Happy. :yes!:
Hope your Summer is Sweet @Richardp6

Well no more hips left to operate on but maybe I’ll be back someday with a knee! Thanks for helping me thru both hips and remember, you don’t need PT!

I do hope you'll pop in from time to time to let us know hope you are doing.
Lots of improvement yet to come.:friends:

@Elf1

I‘m curious about your spinal fusion. My neurosurgeon says I need one and I’m VERY scared of the after effects. Do you have ROM issues? Do you have to avoid doing some activities? Is there another place like bonesmart for back surgeries??

My basis for this is the neurosurgeon that did my spinal fusion.
