Revision TKR How long is recovery???

@MButler12 you've had quite an experience with your makoplasty, wow. Your story resonates particularly well with me since I'm scheduled for the same surgery in November (lateral PKR and patellofemoral inlay) and to be honest, makes me really nervous.
I'm only 2 years older than you and am very active as well (before I became limited by my knee of course). You've had a very unfortunate experience with your replacement and the thought of a similar scenario in my case sounds horrible.
Please keep us posted on your scope and the results. I'm curious to see what they find. It almost sounds like you have some sort of impingement, which can happen with bicompartmental procedures.

Best of luck to you!

Please don't let my bad experiences ruin the possibility of you finding relief. I know that things going wrong in a surgery, is always a risk. I also think that, when I fell on my knee 3 weeks post-op, that might have caused the problems that I have been experiencing. I know the replacement (weather it is a partial or total) can be a really rough procedure for anything to go through. It was the 3rd surgery that I had undergone and I know I didn't anticipate the depression that came along with it. I hope your surgery is successful and helps you find relief. Also know that this forum (and these people) can be one of your biggest support systems outside of family so don't hesitate to post on here. You will have to let me know how your surgery goes. Wish you lots of luck and a speedy healing process. I will also make sure to post as soon as I get home after the surgery.

As I've read your posts to this point, I keep wondering to myself what actually might have happened when you fell in your knee. You suspect something broke loose or shifted? Seems highly unlikely, but then again I've read about a lot of highly unlikely events here on Bonesmart.

Hang in there though, all will eventually be resolved

It's not that I think something broke or shifted so much as I think that the piece on the back of the knee cap has worn down due to bad tracking.

Well I had my 3rd surgery on Wednesday and so I thought I would get on here to update everyone on how the scope went. Just to note a few things, this surgery was done by a colleague of the surgeon who did my partial knee replacement. He thought that scar tissue was what was causing the severe grinding the increased pain. Based off of what my husband was told (after the surgery). The surgeon reportedly cleared out all of the scar tissue that was in the knee, he reportedly took pictures off all of the main areas of the knee and the prosthetic pieces (however, even though I was given copies of all of the pictures, there is not ONE of either one of the prosthesis)..The medial meniscus was removed as well as some torn cartilage. They didn't have to clip any of the tendons around the knee cap since he thought that the tracking was fine (which tells me that my PT must not know very much considering he kept telling me that my knee cap didn't track right. The surgeon told my husband that they would know more once rehab was started....so why am I so incredibly mad? Because my knee is still very much doing the loud grinding and is still accompanied by the same pain that I had. I had this surgery because they thought that it was scar tissue that was causing all of my issues, and now, AFTER SURGERY, I am right back in the same spot and have no answers. What should I do now? I'm seriously lost and very upset. I thought that at least I would have answers and some sort of closure with this scope. please help!!!

I cannot imagine your frustration. So sorry you have to deal with all this.

Sounds like you need to get away from "colleagues" and find yourself an unadulterated second opinion.

It all seems like it's unreal and that this type of stuff only happens in the movies. I mean is it even possible for a surgeon to say that (in my case for example) they can fix the issue with a surgery and then the patient wakes up only to find out that the surgery did nothing... it has been beyond frustrating. I had a friend suggest the Mayo clinic. Has anyone ever had to try this or know of anyone who has? Or know anyone who had had this much bs to go through?

I am a 33-year-old athletic female who underwent a TKR on 9-9-15. Before this surgery, I underwent a Microfracture, 2 scopes, and a PKR all within the last 2 years. I have been unable to walk unassisted since my partial knee replacement. During the TKR, a rod was inserted into my femur due to damage done by the PKR. The rode goes from my knee and almost goes all the way to my hip. I played collegiate sports and was always very athletic and active from the age of 8 to 30. My life has not never been the same since the microfracture, and I have lost more and more of myself after each procedure. I knew, going into the TKR, that there was only a 50% chance of success and that I would never be pain free. I go to PT 2-3 days a week and have reached a wall. I am unable to extend my leg completely (still lack 30 degrees), and no matter what I do/try, things don't get better (I have a dynasplint that I use but think it is a waste of time and money).
The reason why I am writing, is because the pain has reached a point that I can no longer tolerate. I am on a long lasting pain med, as well as one for breakthrough pain. I take a couple other meds for inflammation and nerve pain. When I go from sitting to standing, my leg feels like something is broken. The only other way to describe it, is it feel like crushing pressure ranging from mid thigh to below my calf. I am no overweight (I am 5'10" and 150lbs). The pain does not decrease unless I am completely off of my leg. Once off of the leg, the pain turns to more throbbing, but radiates in the same areas. I will also get breakthrough pain that is so sharp and extreme, that it takes my breath away. I am tried every compound cream you can think of, as well as Lidocane patches, and nothing helps. I would like to know if anyone out there as had anything similar to this, and what they/you have tried. I am to the point that I have been seriously thinking about undergoing a therapeutic amputation. I know there will be pain with that, but I would at least be able to walk again and do some of the things that I used to be able to do. Has anyone had/or known of someone who has had a therapeutic amputation due to multiple failed surgeries? PLEASE HELP!!!!

MButler12,
Welcome back to Bonesmart.
Sorry to hear you are having trouble with your PKR to TKR revision surgery. I have rods in my femur and tibia from my revision the are about 175 mm, I was aware of them early on, and still from time to time.
Have you been seen at a pain clinic for a thorough examination to determine the source of your pain?
Amputation is rare and may not resolve your pain.
I suspect PT is only irritating and flaring up your knee, suggest you take a break and see if that helps.

I am going to tag our forum nurse @Josephine to address your concerns about chronic pain after surgery.

Please add your TKR revision date to your signature, hover over username, click on signature and add your information there, Thanks!

@MButler12 --I merged your two threads as per forum protocol---and that the issues that you have now seem to have also been significant back in 20014. By merging the two threads, we can quickly see what serious issues you had in 20014 and what is going on today.

I changed the prefix of your thread to a Revision and you may change the title, if you wish.

By merging these threads, I believe that we can get you the best advice as quickly as possible.

Yes, I have been seeing a pain specialist since the PKR and we have tried everything possible. I am going in tomorrow to schedule a lumbar epidural steroid shot to see if I can get any relief. I'm tired of taking all of the pills and the lovely kidney infections that I am getting from them.

I hope the epidural helps. Have they suggested a pain pump? I have a friend who does very well with one.
You do not need to quote a message to post, just scoot down below the last post to the box and post your response there.
Thanks for adding all your surgery dates, it will help us advise.
