THR Hip number 2

Thank you everyone. Hubby has looked and can't see anything untoward. It hasn't been as bothersome today.
I am doing the butt clenches regularly to help with circulation and although very painful initially I think I'm progressing. ...

Glad to hear you are progressing! My apologies, as I should have mentioned that I started doing butt clenches weeks before my surgery as part of prescribed pre-op physio. I do remember that for hip #1 glute squeezes were more tender post operatively. With hip #2 they have felt very comfortable to do from the day of surgery. I assume because of doing them regularly prior to surgery. It may be helpful to build up your tolerance gently with them, just a few at a time with less intensity to avoid causing you to be uncomfortable. I do a max of ten and with an intensity that is comfortable for me personally. I NEVER go down the 'no pain no gain' route. If they cause you discomfort, maybe back off in favour of a few steps instead, that would achieve a similar/better blood circulation benefit. I understand the amount of weight we bear through the leg, the better the circulation benefit. It's all very specific to individual circumstances. Just depends how often you want to be up and moving, how well you are able to walk... For me I was getting uncomfortable in-between hourly walking.

In my case, I assumed it to be poor circulation due to the pressure of sitting too long. I have sensitive skin and prolonged pressure on my skin in any area can trigger an itch. I took it as a reminder that I wasn't moving around enough. I tried to get up more often, shift position more and put some extra cushioning on my chair. I also was made aware of how successfully glute clenches are at improving blood circulation. I was getting up on the hour, just for a stretch sometimes and doing the ankle pumps and butt clenching on the hour. That seemed to minimise it.
Hi, @Shadowstar1951! good to hear you're on the road to recovery - slow and steady wins the race.

@Deni444 thanks for reminding me about glute clenches - I'm sure lack of mobility/ pressure/poor circulation contributes to the general itching and tingling sensations I'm getting following TAR. With restricted mobility I've been trying the extra cushioning and changes of position but had forgotten the exercises.
I also seem to remember that restlessness can be a reminder to keep up with the pain killer schedule.
Best wishes to all.

Ah yes, TAR! Based on personal experience of foot surgery and prolonged sitting during years of mobility issues, I think it's commonly related to a general need to be sitting a lot, regardless of procedure. I second that thought on restlessness. I found that to be a sign I needed to consider medication.

Hello and Happy Saturday Shadowstar,
It's been a week since we've heard from you. I hope all is going well and you've settled into a comfortable routine, even though our routine is ever changing in early recovery. Let us know how you're doing if you have a minute and best wishes for a pleasant weekend!
@Shadowstar1951!

Good morning Layla, thank you for your message.
Hubby and I are in a routine which seems to be working well. The first week was challenging.
I cant believe the difference a week makes as to how I am. I'm walking very well with my sticks. In fact when I'm indoors I sometimes forget the sticks and off I go!
BUT I am careful and in the house I am not far from something to hold onto.
Discomfort is well controlled with my usual meds of Tramadol and Paracetamol and I have managed to cut out one dose in the afternoon.
Friends and family are very pleased with my progress considering I'm not 2 weeks post op yet.
The bruising has been horrific! But I've always bruised easily, I'm on blood thinners and I'm 74 and a half , and 3 years older than when I had my first hip done.
It starts from below my waist ,over my bottom, down my thigh, down my leg to the bottom of my foot..It is starting to turn into a yellow colour in places.
I've accepted the fact I have to sleep on my back for a while. The worst part about it is the backache. I just get up and know that I can nap later on..
I'm having my dressing removed tomorrow and if all is fine I am hoping I can have a shower and wash my hair!!! So excited!!
I feel very lucky to be having a positive recovery and I am so thankful for that. I know for many people their recovery is difficult .
Sending lots of healing hugs to those in need.
Will continue to post and thank you everyone for your support and good wishes...xx

Oh my goodness, what a bruise :thud:Hopefully that will gradually fade away as it is already looking yellow. I've found having an extra pillow under my head and back so I'm a little more upright for sleeping is easier on my back. Not particularly a natural sleeping position for me but a compromise on back ache. I imagine that shower will be quite a blissful celebration.

All the best on your healing journey!

Thank you myglasshalffull and Denni...
What's the saying...Pride comes before a fall?...I've
been a bit silly and I think it's a case of overdoing it ... I've also missed out my meds thinking I don't need them..So I'm feeling exhausted and sore..
I'll try and sit more upright in bed and see if that helps the backache...x

Thanks for the update, Shadowstar. It sounded like you were doing really well. Already taking steps without an assistive device, cutting meds and making progress, but possibly now you've taking a seat in the ODIC (Over Did It Club) Take some meds, rest, ice and get some sleep if you're able so you're feeling stronger for your post op tomorrow. I hope you're feeling better soon.
Best wishes as you have the dressing removed tomorrow and hopefully receive a nod to shower. Let us know how it goes.
@Shadowstar1951!

I’m sure having the dressing removed today will be beneficial.
We’ve all overdone it along this recovery road. I remember telling my partner about 5 days after my surgery that I’d be up & around in no time!
Well that didn’t happen. But I tried.
Just take it easy for a bit, ice, rest and meds & you should improve.

Well that didn’t happen. But I tried.
I echo this sentiment. I honestly think 'silly' is my middle name when it comes to recovery. With hip#1 I was constantly overdoing it and pushing beyond what I was ready for and regretting it. Dropping medication too soon, one of many examples. I'm trying really hard to be better this time around but I'm constantly dropping medication that with hindsight would have been beneficial. It's a balancing act between gradually reducing them but being aware of the benefit in terms of comfortable activity/exercise.

Thank you everyone for your support. I had my dressing changed yesterday.. The wound is still a bit 'weepy' but no concerns..
However, the dressing is waterproof so I am having a shower soon... Washing my hair!!!
I took things a bit easier yesterday and had better sleep...I woke up at 3,5 and 7 am which is fine ...
It's going to be a lovely sunny day here so a short stroll to the village pub later with friends...

A belated Happy One Month Anniversary!
