Here we go again!

Just 1 week left to 2nd hip replacement! Recovery first time around was pretty smooth (proud member of ODIC). I'm hoping for the same this time around but also scared about the law of averages!

Having SuperPath procedure and opted for outpatient this time - surgery at 8:30 am next Saturday and, if all goes well, home by 3:00 or 4:00. My primary caregiver will be my 16 YO son (with some assistance from 22 YO son) so primary goal before discharge is to be able to dress, bathe and use the bathroom without assistance!

Making plans to go dancing (ok, I'll be limited to chair dancing at best) on Day 6 for my birthday (told you I was a member of ODIC) - need some sort of goal! Hoping to be off pain meds by then so that I can have a cocktail to celebrate but, if not, will have to settle for the pain meds instead.

Keeping good thoughts and getting excited and nervous!
Hi Sarah
I was also scared of the same thing. As it turned out my recovery pains were different. My recovery time was the same. My posterior replacement were 4 months apart, May 2 and 9/11.
I have no regrets. In fact very glad I didn't wait. I walk a lot easier, I even been dancing once. A little sore the next day, just rested and iced and elevated.
You will do great...
Best wishes

I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop! The last couple of weeks before my first THR were a whirlwind of medical issues. At my pre-surgical in March, my doctor gave me a medication to try to lose some weight. When I went to the pre-anesthesia visit 2 weeks later, my BP was in the 160s and my pulse was over 120 - all caused by the medication! They took me off the new meds and waited a week but no significant improvement so they had to start all sorts of testing and do it all quickly. More blood test tests, x-rays, an echocardiogram, etc. They decided I had mild high blood pressure (do you think it could be the stress from the run around trying to get medically cleared for surgery?) and discovered a borderline ejection fraction issue (i.e., my heart wasn't pumping as efficiently as it should). In the end, they decided I was fit for surgery but I had gained the right to say "my cardiologist."

Fast forward to this time, cardiologist said I was a low enough cardiac risk he didn't have an objection to outpatient surgical center and I didn't even need to see him before my surgery. My blood work and exam was so good that my internist took me off the blood pressure meds (they'd already had to reduce the very low starter dose because my BP improved after I started working out) and she's cutting my diabetes meds by 75%. Call me superstitious, but I'm waiting until after the surgery to make the changes in my meds! I'm not doing anything that could delay this surgery!

After all that, though, the lead up to surgery just seems to be going too smoothly. As a firm believer in Murphy's Law, I'm just wondering what/when something is going to happen! But, not too much time left for that shoe to fall - Saturday is just around the corner!

I found all the pre-op stress totally messed with my BP. You are anxious in the run up to surgery and then when you attend the pre-op you are stressed about that too. No wonder your BP is through the roof.

Just stay positive. Not long now!

BP issue last time caused more by meds than anything else (until I got on the medical merry-go-round). This time around, it's staying around 115 - 125 over 55-65. They had to decrease the meds a couple of months ago because the systolic was in danger or going below 100 and I was having lightheadedness on standing several times a day.

Hopefully you've had all your hiccups before your op, getting them all over with in one go! Good luck on Saturday, Sara, fingers crossed for an uneventful recovery

Sometimes things just fall into place and the shoe that drops is a good one! Keep a positive attitude-you are almost there!

Yep - luckily nothing crept up to bite me this time and I was lucky that my doctor was able to push things through so quickly last time (got all of the extra tests, including the echo) done in 5 days and got clearance 2 days before surgery date - didn't have to reschedule.

Final countdown! Lead the way for us!

Sending positive thoughts to you for Saturday. Get this done then enjoy your birthday!
Very best wishes Martin

Now confirmed for 14th need pre op first had meeting yesterday with OS great guy I feel comfortable and confident with him he is hoping to do second after 6 weeks if all goes to plan. Again all the best for Saturday

Which are you doing first @mcopt ? Are you going to part of our L-R doubles group?

We decided best to so right first discussed simultaneous bilateral with OS he can do it but felt best one at a time planning a 6 week gap if all goes to plan my original plan was bilateral resurfacing but had second thoughts.

A friend went to my surgeon (what referral fee should I get for double THR?). He prefers 6-8 weeks in between as well. I know some on here have done bilateral but my preference is 1 at a time. Plus, we didn't know I was going to need the 2nd when we did the first in April. So sorry you're not going to be a member of our club, though!

@SaraK Following your above conversation I too wanted a bilat, OS said I was a great candidate but recommended sequential, easier on the body, etc. Ended up having to wait six mos between thrs though.. argh! Good thing about the wait is I went into the second one feeling strong. I did L-R double thrs too!

Great that you and mcopt are both doing the SPath, it's becoming more popular.

Best wishes for tomorrow and remember no screaming allowed :heehee:

Thank you all for the wonderful and encouraging messages. I'm headed to the surgery center now and will post on my recovery thread (enjoy the music that will be running through your mind all day afterwards) when I'm out of surgery and when (hopefully in just a few hours) I'm safe and secure at home!
